No Windows Updates over Mobile Broadband!

    Hi everyone,
I am running windows 10 pro and now i want to update my system using "Windows Updates". The problem is that Windows Update is showing numerous new updates for the system but i have a mobile broadband (ie. usb dongle type) for internet purposes over which i want to download all the system updates. but the updates wont download maybe because Windows 10 has set this connection type as 'metered'.
Whats even worse is that the metered and non-metered choice is greyed out and i cannot change it. I then tried the command prompt method described on this site. it momentarily does change the mobile broadband connection as 'Unrestricted' but STILL windows wont download any updates over this connection *Sad.

I want to know HOW to download updates through Windows Update application using my mobile broadband connection.

Does any one know about editing the relevant registry entries to force Windows use mobile broadband for Windows Updates?

PS: I dont have ANY other source of internet ie. Wifi or Ethernet.

    Thanks

    :)

    Control windows 10 home updates

    Hi All

I need a way to control windows updates over mobile broadband.

I know you can manage it over WIFI. That is; you can set each WiFi network can have a "Metered connection" property set on it. Metered networks should not allow updates to be downloaded and that your updates will be withheld until
you connect to a network that you have not identified as Metered.

BUT you cannot set LAN networks as Metered, only WiFi ones.

The problem I have is that my mobile broadband is identified as an Ethernet LAN connection.

I do try to keep my laptop up-to-date and make absolutely sure all patches antivirus etc are up-to-date before I go on the road. But this does not stop win10 downloading the latest update over what is my most expensive connection.

How can I change the way in which windows 10 identifies my usb mobile broadband or control which LAN is a “Metered Connection”?

    Thanks

    Peter

I figured out that windows store apps doesn't work with 3g mobile broadband. They are working perfectly over Wi-Fi connection. I think windows store apps doesn't recognize 3g mobile broadband. If there is any solution please tell me. My data card model
    no is Huawei e-1731.

No Windows Updates over Mobile Broadband!

The simplest solution is going to SERVICES.MSC
    there locate Windows UPDATE
right click and set the service from MANUAL to DISABLED
Now there are no updates (until you switch it on again)

    Also the STORE is disabled

    Good luck

I supposed you checked this Wireless Network Metered Connection - Set in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I'm not sure how to solve your problem and make WWAN appear as unmetered so if these suggestions do not help as a workaround you can download and install the updates manually from Microsoft Update Catalog

When you toggle metered to unmetered it updates the first byte of a value called "Unit Cost" in the registry.
In my case this value is in the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WlanSvc\Interfaces\{1D5A28E7-E378-419E-9642-0E3AB2E78211}\Profiles\{B8E9A75A-8611-4143-BC15-308AAD66511D}\Metadata

Yours may be different in which case open regedit and search for the value of User Cost

You can update the first byte of this binary value to change the metered status - 00 is off and 02 is on.

Alternatively (and probably better as you have 10 Pro) you should be able to set the User Cost in gpedit.msc (*Start + R then type gpedit.msc and press enter).

Go to Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Tempates > Network > WWAN Service > WWAN Media Cost.

There you will see 3G and 4G. Probably you want to change them both. Open them, change to enabled and set the cost value to unrestricted

Thanks for the prompt response. But i guess you didnt get my question. I DO want to download updates, the only condition being that Windows 10 should use my Mobile Broadband connection for doing so. So the question is how to force windows 10 to USE the mobile broadband connection for downloading system updates through Windows Update application.

Thanks for the link halasz! atleast this solves the problem partially/temporarily.
But i cant understand why should Microsoft be so rigorous in implementing internet metering because ultimately the 'owner' of the system is the master of his broadband connections and if he/she wants to use that connection for downloading huge Windows Updates then why not?? As OSs upto Window 7 easily allowed users to use ANY connection for downloading the Windows Updates, i believe that this is definitely a retrograde step by Microsoft.

I hope Microsoft removes such artificial restriction or atleast gives enough control/options to the users so that such basic problems dont arise in the future.

Please see updated last post for a couple of workarounds to try - regedit (works for me on Wi-Fi) and gpedit.msc (a better bet I think).

Sorry our posts crossed - I was too slow updating *Smile

No Windows Updates over Mobile Broadband!

I use a Vodafone USB Mobile Broadband and can download, but, I always have to click download to give windows permission. There are 2 places to change the metered-non metered: 1) Settings app>Devices>Printers & Scanners and 2) Connected devices check both.

If those are both grayed out, are you using the "RTM" version/build 10..0.10240 Build 10240, or are you an "Insider"? I ask because, Insider versions will not let you update, other than for Defender, when using metered connections.

Those are not greyed and i have both of them checked for downloading.

    Yup *Smile

I guess the gpedit method worked. Initially when Windows Update was at say 8% ie. in the middle of the download and i connected my mobile broadband then it did not used to move any further. Also the 'Checking for updates' status used to continue forever.

But this time it could successfully check for updates and then it asked for my permission to 'Download' using my mobile broadband. I pressed the 'Download' button and the update got installed *Smile

So i guess it worked. Thanks halasz for the much needed solution.

However i would be able to confirm this 100% only when MS releases next batch of huge downloads.

I couldn't actually test it as I only have Wifi but the regedit method certainly also changes the metered connection switch.

Anyway it is good is seemed to work. Let us know if it works (or rather if it doesn't) on the next batch as you said.

  11. Problems with Windows 10 Updates are an ongoing issue now.
and the possible solution to overcome this is by downloading the updates manually from the Microsoft®Update Catalog or using tools like WHDownloader (formerly Windows Hotfix Downloader)

Can also use the CAB installer to get them installed into your system : Windows 10 update cab file Installer. - Windows 10 Forums

Microsoft®Update Catalog is a solution but a lengthy one. You have to enter each and every update in the search bar individually. that becomes cumbersome.

Do we have a method to know the size of each update just like we used to have it in Windows 7? so that atleast we can shortlist them and download them using Catalog.

Good news. Fresh updates were issued by MS today and i was able to download them using my mobile broadband.

But i still guess that MS is making a BIG mistake in introducing these changes in PC Windows 10. All these features suit the phones and NOT the desktops/laptops. For example now users are not even given the option of choosing WHEN to download the updates. They just happen when windows finds an unmetered connection.

I hope this issue wont pop up again. Thanks halasz! *Smile
