Windows 10: Original windows 10 disc

On the "getting a dvd burner"; I have 4 Windows 10 computers and they have built-in DVD burners.

Having that Windows 10 DVD you have in mind, can you please let us know what the original Windows version it installs?
--- I have Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.xxx).
As time goes on Windows 10 versions update with "creators" updates, I'm wondering how that DVD will keep up with future versions if you will need it again. It will be nice if it does, but if it doesn't you will have to update from the original setup to the newest setup possibly involved in creating up-to-date Windows 10 install media.
--- Have a system image backup plan: if it's ever needed you will be kept up to date with the installed version you are working with including your data and very importantly your applications.

Having said that though, as I said in a prior post, essentially go ahead and purchase the one you want: it isn't an expensive endeavor and it looks like a good choice to find out if it meets your need.

 

...and, like this one in your search results, says on the disk that it is "Intended for distribution with a new PC" and in the photo of the documentation says "Microsoft OEM System Builder license". The seller dosen't explicitly tell you that, you have to look carefully at the photos.

At least that one clearly says "Microsoft Software | Windows 10 Home 64 Bit System Builder OEM | PC Disc" in the title of the page.

 

Yeah i think im just going to go ahead and buy that dvd i found for starters.

 

First, I wouldn't buy one on eBay, as you don't know if it is a legit disc or not. It could have been tampered with, and malware preloaded.

Second, what is the point of putting so much time and effort (and money) into buying a disc you can't use? I'm trying to find the logic, but I'm failing miserably. You'd need to get a DVD drive in order to use the disc, correct? So what's the point? If you insist on having the disc for some strange reason, then get a burner and make one yourself. That way, in the rare event you would need to use it, you actually have a drive to use the disc. if you don't want to buy a DVD drive, then there's absolutely no reason to obtain the disc. The USB drive will work just the same (only faster), and you can easily recreate one if you happen to misplace or break the flash drive. Common sense!

Everybody needs to have at least ONE ! The down side is its 1511 !

Actually, the bare minimum you need is the MCT. In fact I have all the old MCT's from 10240 up to 1709. All of them up to and including the MCT for 1607 still make the ISO for the build they were released for. So if I ever need a 1511 iso for, say, FR-FR or EN-CA I can make one.

All that ended with the 1703 MCT - it checks first, says there's a new version and tells you to download it *Sad

 

This has likely already been mentioned multiple times, I skimmed over some posts, but what ever you buy, even if its from Microsoft, will be out of date in 6 months or less. Total waist of money IMHO. Major build updates are happening about twice a year. You will have to clean install, then do a major update to the latest build. For that matter, the official Microsoft thumb drive you have now is very likely out of date. I'd keep that for my backup emergency use media. It's read only and can't be updated. And just create a new thumb drive with the current release. Just reuse that thumb drive, rewriting it each time a new build is released. You'll only have two thumb drives max at any one time. Optical media as mentioned is slow, and easily damaged. The MCT will if you want create 32 / 64 bit install media, you chose which to use, and have all the editions you'll likely ever need.

 

I think it is clear - everyone thinks it is a bad idea and you should use the ISO distribution method MS recommend and put it on a USB. If you want you could burn it to DVD - buying an external burner would be cheaper than buying a second license just to get the disk.

If you insist on buying a DVD you'll either buy something pointlessly expensive ($100 for a second license from Microsoft when you already presumably have one) or a dodgy rip off from ebay containing who knows what. Even if you go this route it will be outdated in 2 weeks when we get the next upgrade.

If you want to do it anyway then by all means do - it is up to you - but no-one will say it is a good idea, because, quite simply, it isn't.

 

Actually all the stores including Microsoft don't usually carry the latest windows 10 versions . They usually have the latest prior versions from the latest and you're right in time those also will be outdated . Plain and simple its best just to use MS site download the latest and installed on a flash drive ...

as it would be a reliable 2nd "source" if his USB media breaks or stop working.

Well I ordered so lets see when it arrives.

 

I have a full set of the old MCTs and when needed have used them to deliberately create ISOs for 1607 and earlier. They still work (even for 10240).
