Windows 10: Problems downloading with Edge

As a test

What happens if you change the Downloads folder location to somewhere on C drive instead of D do you get the same problem

If this works then change back to D for the location and see if it makes any difference

 

Same. I relocated Downloads from D:\Users\Hali\Downloads to C:\TEMP and downloaded Notepad++ from here

After "retry" I got this downloaded (note the _exe)... @fracking4oil has also moved his/her Downloads folder and it works OK for them so I don't think it is that.

Note the download 15 minutes later is from the same place but using IE not Edge... It isn't renamed.

 

Do you get the same issue if you download in IE? (not sure if they share some of the settings)

As far as I can gather this is related to Protected Mode in IE, but because IE has more options you can tell it once to override when doing the first download and it remembers it, Edge has no options for downloading

So if you download once via IE, then it might work in the future for Edge

 

Actually it does in simple terms! Since it isn't the "finished product" and still in a beta form just about anything goes! That makes it unreliable for an every day default browser at this time. MS simply hid IE however to force everybody to "Hey you have to try Edge out since you have no other option! See Edge replaced IE!" without IE still being seen but need to be found all over again.

What gets you however and where there was an obvious mistake is that you can only import Favorites, bookmarks from IE yet IE is nowhere to be found except by the manual browse to the program folder itself in order to see it pinned! Somebody made a goof! Better have all of your Favorites, booksmarks backed up from your 7 or 8, 8.1 install first before using Edge!

 

I have (on occasion) had protected mode turned on in IE (I did think of that also funnily enough)

However at the moment it is off (it doesn't work well with EMET - I have to turn off ESF and ASR mitigation or IE just crashes). I've not turned on Protected mode since my last clean install.

I downloaded the same thing OK through IE (see screenshot above). Edge still has the same issue.

I think you are probably right though. Some setting in IE is messing with Edge. I'll reset it and see if that helps.

 

I'm not sure I understand your point. Does this specific case work for you or not? (Not bookmarks or favorites or anything else - I'm only asking about "retry" and renaming of downloads in Edge browser, not whether it is generally good.).

 

My only other possible thought is remove IE from the programs and features menu, then restart, then add IE back again

See if it resets any settings that might be causing it

 

OK, Paul, I removed IE, rebooted (same issue), Added IE back (same issue), reset IE to defaults, rebooted, deleted the Microsoft Edge folder from %localAppData% in case it was remembering something but still it is the same.

I tried it in my 10532 VM and it doesn't do it. No retry, no renaming (user folders are on C not relocated but otherwise the same, same software installed except newer version of Windows).

Something is up with my install. The strange thing is it is a clean install only a couple of days old and I've really done nothing (that I recall) except relocating user folders. Perhaps it is that - I'll test it out.

 

Not sure I can think of much else to try

Actually you didn't answer the question.. did you?? Did you tell him how to fix his download issue other than saying use another browser?? If you have a solution to the problem in the OP fine.. but what you posted is not even close to that.

 

Again, I have to suggest doing an in-place upgrade, you'll be able to save everything if you choose and the installer may update giving you a more stable install than your previous clean install (it has for me).

 

I agree. The issue might be do to a bad instillation and that might clear that up.

 

I'll give it a go, certainly. I'm out of other options...

In IE you have the options for "run, save, or save as" seen there with the options bar that appears at the bottom of the IE window you see open up for whatever download you are going for. In Edge everything immediates goes to the "users\user account\Downloads" folder automatically without any options! As I stated earlier it's not even close to being a finished browser let alone a replacement for IE at this time even when it is working.

The only thing Edge gets from IE is bookmarks, Favorites as far as where you can import things from. The settings in one browser as a rule will have no effect on any other browser. They are two different browsers entirely. Edge would have to be reset to see if that would work since that is the browser having the problem.

Besides seeing Edge wiped and then reinstalled fresh which isn't any option available at this time other things such as a firewall or antivirus program can impede things at times. What you see there is the options for downloads in Edge more like the download history seeing the only option of clearing the history.

With Edge still in a beta form I wouldn't recommend to anyone to leave it set as the default browser for things like downloads, online media, etc. at this time since the browser even when working as seen there still is not ready to replace IE fully. What can't you understand about that?

As far as a repair install I did that the first week when 10 was first out and then proceeded to rectify everything with the clean install still in use now! Not bugs to report since that was seen to. With any new version you can expect a few of them may be needed until everything is set to go! Then make another smart move of seeing a full system image backup of the drive created just in case of ???!

Higher success rates are far more commonly seen with clean installs where everything tends to go on more fully. While on some rare occasions a clean install can also go buggy since it is still "Software" the probability of ending up with a buggy upgrade even when gong to repair install depends on how extensive a problem is. Edge by itself isn't a major issue when you have an alternative with IE before any new OS installs are required. The clean install is recommended when too much else seems to be bugged up!
