Windows 10: Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

That error means that the .bat file was unable to reset your Windows Update since it was not able to stop the bits (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) service.

You might see if you may be able to manually stop and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service service. If it won't stop normally, then you could see if it may after restarting the computer, or doing this while in safe mode.

If successful, try running the .bat again.

 

I was successful in stopping the BITS but when I reran the program, I got this error message:

"Failed to reset windows update due to wuauserv service failing to stop"

Do you have any other ideas?

 

Repeat the above, but this time for the Windows Update service instead. *Smile

I tried this and the program seemed to run (it closed before I could read the whole window) but when I restart the computer and try to update windows I get the same 0x8024002e error. When I ran the windows update troubleshooter after this I got "Service registration is missing or corrupt" and then it says "fixed". But again I get the same error code when I try to update windows. Any other ideas?

When the .bat file runs and closes the command prompt, then it means that it successfully reset Windows Update.

Unfortunately, resetting Windows Updates does not fix all Windows Update errors.

Hi Brink, thanks for the BAT file. Although it seemed to work, after I restarted, Windows update is continuously searching for updates but never finds anything. The 'checking for updates' dots just loop over and over.

It seems the service is stopped and is unable to restart again.

System error 1067 has occurred.


The process terminated unexpectedly.

Sometimes it may do that for a while then suddenly show properly again on its on. This can happen when there's a very large update available. Usually letting it sit for up to 20 minutes would be long enough to tell.

If not, then while it's still spinning its wheels, manually stop and start the Windows Update service.

I should add that the service was already stopped when I checked. Trying to restart it yielded the error below.

In that case, see if restarting Windows may help.

 

I did do a restart first thing but the problem persisted. Then I started getting some 'blue screen' 'CRITICAL PROCESS DIED' and 'MEMORY MANAGMENT' errors on several reboots. Opened up my computer, did a good dusting and re-seated the memory. Booted once more and everything seems to be operation normally now. Thank for you help!

It's me from the other thread. Thanks for the help on that other matter; however, this current issue with resetting Windows Update because Windows Calculator and Alarms & Clock continue to have Error Code 0x80070003. Unfortunately your solution above did not work on this machine. I'm beginning to think this laptop was a test version for Windows 10 developers. Any other ideas?

 

If you don't use those apps, then I'd just leave them for now to see the next build update may fix them in the process.
