  1. Resetting Win 10 Start Menu

Is it possible to reset the win 10 start menu to the day I installed win 10? I'm having all kind of little issues with it now that I didn't before and I'd like to reset.

I know there was a method to do this in the preview builds but that doesn't seem to work anymore.

    :)

Critical Error - Your Start menu isn't working - How do I fix this ??

I also had a start menu problem after upgrading from win 7 to win 10

I could right click on start menu and access a context menu but left click did nothing

To get to win 10 settings I right clicked on the desktop and selected personalise then used the back arrow to get to the full win 10 settings that I couldn't reach because the start menu wouldn't open

Select the option to reset default apps/programs - then my start menu worked again

I found this by accident - I don't like "edge" so I set IE as the default browser. Then I kept seeing messages about a problem where IE was not compatible and default browser was resetting

So I now use chrome - the message about resetting was the clue for me. After resetting defaults the problem was fixed but none of the Microsoft suggested fixes worked

    Dual boot - Win 7 & Win 10

Some time ago I installed Win 10 (not an upgrade) next to Win 7 on my PC. During the boot a new Win 10 menu with light blue background appeared giving me the choice to start Win 7 or Win 10. That menu also had an option which OS should be default.

Recently Win 7 had problems (actually Outlook 2007) and I decided to do a clean install of Win 7.

The result is that the Win 10 menu with light blue background does not appear any longer. Instead a Win 7 menu with dark grey background appears giving me the choice to start Win 7 (default) or Win 10. The default cannot be changed.

However the Win 7 menu does not also appear. When I have chosen Win 10, shutdown the PC and restart, the PC automatically boots in Win 10, not giving me any choice.

After having booted in Win 10 and a new shutdown, then the Win t menu might again at a restart.

I know in principle first Win 7 has to be installed before Win 10. However, I do not want to reinstall Win 10 for a number of reasons, not in the least because Win 10 is working fine. For at least one application I have to have the license key reset each
    time I reinstall the program.

Is it possible to have the PC booting and showing the Win 10 menu with light blue background without having to reinstall Win 10?

    Resetting Win 10 Start Menu

    Found this: by bobbyleeindc http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_personal/how-can-i-reset-windows-10-10240-start-menu-to/e803411c-f3ca-4c2a-95cf-fd70fb94fc8c?page=2

To do this, you need 3 accounts.

    You existing account
    Enabled Administrator account
One other account. Just create a temp account then login as it so the TileDataLayer folder. Note it must be an Administrator level account so make sure that is the case.

Enable the Hidden Administrator account by opening a Elevated Command Prompt and entering:

net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter.

Logoff your normal account, login as Administrator so the TileDataLayer folder gets created.
    Logoff Administrator.
Login as the new temp account.

Using File Explorer, navigate to C:\Users\[user profile name]\AppData\Local.
    Rename TileDataLayer to TileDataLayer-old
Using File Explorer, navigate to C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local.
Right click and copy TileDataLayer then navigate to C:\Users\[user profile name]\AppData\Local.
    Right click and Paste.

That should have copied the TileDataLayer folder from Administrator to your normal account. The original should still be there as TileDataLayer-old.

Logoff the temp account, login as your normal account. See if the Start menu is now the default one. If any problems delete TileDataLayer and rename TileDataLayer-old to TileDataLayer.

This used to work on the original Windows 7 upgrade to Windows 10 on August 11, 2015 and also the in-place upgrade installs of build 10240 until October 18, 2015. Then after the Security Update came out on October 19, 2015, all the reinstalls I did, when I copy the database folder, it really needs just the .db file, it no longer works. When it did work, I had to copy the file from the good account while logged in to the problem account or else it won't work. Now after replacing the file, the start menu won't open when I click on it until I delete the .db file. The copying and delete is done when the tiledatamodelsvc is stopped.

I have a question, does Windows actually query Microsoft or does it have a template somewhere when creating the default tiles because I noticed the August 11, 2015 install had default live tiles but everything in the live tiles are apps that are on the system while the in-place upgrade done on September 12, 2015 and even now, the default tiles are apps that are on the system plus it will have tiles for I<3Radio, Minecraft Windows 10 Edition Beta, Flipboard, all three apps that are not even installed on the system. Is there a way to have a tile that just links to a app in the store or is there a way to install a app, uninstall and keep the tile instead of deleting it?

    Resetting Win 10 Start Menu

    To copy the "TileDataLayer" folder.

When you try to copy the "C:\Users\usename\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer" folder you received the following message for certain files:

"The action can't be completed because the file is open in State Repository Service"

So at left Open Service Window and go at "Tile Data model server" service. This service can be stop but just during some seconds.
So we need to stop it many time so we can copy all files of "TitleDataLayer" folder.

At right Open Explorer.exe Window and go at "C:\Users\usename\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer".
Press right mouse button and press "Copy". Choose another folder and press "Paste"

The copy begins and when you received the message above just stop the service again. Continue to copy. Do that until all files are copied.

    Enjoy !
