    Scan drive for errors

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    1) fsutil dirty set C:
    2) shutdown /r

    3) chkdsk /x /f /r
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight.

    C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /x /f /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: Y
    reboot

Post the chkdsk report into the thread using the information in this link:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

    4) Run HDTune:
    HD Tune website
    to check the health,
scan for errors, no quick scan but full scan
    run a benchmark.

It may take some time, but please take the time you need to perform it properly.
When above is done please make screenshots of the following
    the health,
    the error scan,
    the benchmark incl. following
    transfer rate,
    access time,
    burst rate,
    cpu usage.

    Short quoted...

As I said previously in this thread, there isn't anything wrong with the drive, but there is something wrong with Windows 10 providing a notification with "click here to view" and it returns nothing when clicked.

This is a log collector that we use in the BSOD forum. It will collect the event viewer, msinfo32, dumps, dxdiag etc.
Please run it and post a zip into the thread for troubleshooting.

    Scan drive for errors

Sorry about that. I am in the middle of something right now and I have 3 boot partitions on this computer (Windows 7, 8, 10) and when I did the image, I was not paying attention. My problem is with Windows 10, not 7. I will post the Windows 10 image in a little while.

If you have already confirmed the drive file system with chkdsk /x /f /r and confirmed the health of the drive with SMART, Health, and error scans you may perform an in place upgrade repair to reduce the likelihood that there is operating system problem. This should maintain files and applications.
Create a bootable windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10
    1) Make sure that you have booted using windows 10 version 1703
    2) open file explorer
    3) insert the windows 10 iso into a USB drive
    4) identify the windows 10 iso within file explorer
    5) click on the iso and find the setup or setup.exe file and launch it
    6) for the in place upgrade make sure that you do not click on install
    7) look in the left lower corner for repair your computer
    8) click on it and follow the text and images in this link:

I appreciate your assistance, but I don't want to destroy what has been accomplished; a refresh or reset does a complete reinstall (been down that road) and it will not save programs, only data, if you happen to have office installed, you will lose you license.

Were you able to read the informational portion of the link about refresh and reset compared to in place upgrade repair?

    Scan drive for errors

Brink is a very smart person, but I don't trust it. I tried a refresh once and it formatted the HD and did a complete install. I will leave the repairs to someone else when it comes to repairing Windows. I am moving back to Windows 7 and hope that M$ will come out with a new version of XP *Biggrin
