  1. Several Win10 Updates Won't Install

Windows Update has tried and failed to install these updates on my desktop unit:

    4058258 - 15 times
    4074588 - 20 times
    4088776 - 7 times
    4090913 - 8 times

With each failure, I get this message:

Several Win10 Updates Won't Install [IMG]

In an attempt to resolve these issues, I tried downloading from MS catalog site and manually installing the updates. All failures.

Having read several frustrated posts on a few sites, I recognize that MS is aware of all this and that it is a widespread problem. My two questions are:

    1. Should I just wait for the major Win 10 Feature Update this Spring and hope that it resolves the issues?

    2. Is there a relatively easy way for a non-tech user to get all these updates properly installed?

    Thank you for your help?

    :)

Brother MFC-8820D printer driver will not install on a clean Win10 install

My trusty old laser multifunction will not install on my workstation. It has a clean install of Win10 x64. The scanner and fax portions were recognized and installed automatically via USB, but the printer portion will not install. The same printer is used
in my home network by several computers on Win10, although these were all updated from Win7.

It won't install, neither from USB nor as a network printer (IP address). Trying to use the update feature or search for drivers online will not work.

  3. postpone upgrade beyond 3 days

I have several Win7 PCs with this same problem. Win10 won't install so I want to delay being prompted until MUCH later, say 1 month or 2.

Please post the steps to resolve this issue.

    Several Win10 Updates Won't Install

Hi, there are references to this error number suggesting the normal routine of running
SFC /SCANNOW and /or DISM commands will not help here.

    This discussion
error 0x80092004Â* trying to deploy kb4074588 wi... |Shavlik User Community
indicates it may arise from a previous defective patch. It suggests amongst other things removing (uninstalling) that patch, then installing the full patch manually
    (available here:
    Cumulative Update KB4088776 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.309 - Mar. 13 - Windows 10 Forums
    )

It's worth searching further for your specific error number 0x80092004

e.g. this suggesting skipping this update... which could be one option, as you suggest.

Another option, if you're really keen to get up to date, might be to do an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs and data and most settings.

If you simply wish to wait, you may want to hide these updates to stop them being re-attempted.

    - good idea.
For interest- please note there is a thread per update per build in the News section with a description and comments by users on their experience following.

  5. Correct. Didn't work for me either.

But how would I know WHICH previous patch was defective?

It tells me that issue is resolved in the KB updates which DO NOT INSTALL. See image:

Does not do anything for me.

This might be a bit risky, especially since I'm not a techie.

I think I'll wait. Maybe I'll figure out how to "hide these updates".

Dalchina...Thank you for your extensive and informative reply.

Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials
    - please feel free to search or browse the extensive practical Tutorial section.

A convenient way to do this is to use the free Windows Update Minitool (easy to find).

Resetting and using the MS troubleshooters is perfectly safe.

We also continually recommend people use disk imaging routinely (Macrium Reflect (free) ) so you almost always have saved image to restore disks/partitions/Windows to a previously save working state relatively quickly and without technical help.

From the L column of this chart - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4043454
you've not had successful update since 1/18 ? All the multiple failed ones are above this date. Confirm your current version- Win+rR, type winver OK, post result.

I think I'll wait. Maybe I'll figure out how to "hide these updates".

There are a number of posts from users having issues with the latest WU, but not this far back. You have a more serious issue. If you haven't done so, try running the Troubleshooter for Windows Update (All settings\Updates & Security\Troubleshoot\Get up and running.
If that doesn't resolve it and the computer is, otherwise, working normally and you have good AV, use dalchina's link to Hiding WUs so your work is not interrupted to install inevitably failed updates.

Then just wait for the 1803 major Feature Update which, if you have experience downloading from Windows Catalog, you should have no problem installing it just like the previously suggested Repair Install using my fave option, the ISO, Step 4 so you have on hand in the future.
Tutorial includes a very helpful video to walk you thru the process and you can see what screens to expect. Good Luck -

My OS per winver is v1709 Build 16299.192

So, you are up to date as of -

    January 3, 2018—KB4056892 (OS Build 16299.192)Applies to: Windows 10 version 1709

If this is working fine for you, I would just stay on this build, review the In Place Repair video in the tutorial and when 1803 comes out on ISO in the next couple weeks, you can download it, rewrite the OS and get a fresh start rather than waste time debugging this for a couple weeks usage. *really

Agree, spend least effort you can. Nothing much lost by running the troubleshooters and then a Windows Update scan. (Remember updates are cumulative, so you only need the latest of these).

On the availability of the next major build-
    1. these are released to the public via Windows Update over a period of 2-3 months- in phases
    2. you could (and this is what I do- eventually) is download the iso and do the upgrade manually

I prefer to wait until the first major update is released AFTER the upgrade - let the flak die down. (I also wait until a 3rd party program is made compatible with the new build).

I may be speculating here, but everything I've been reading here and other places, makes me highly suspicious of KB4090913 as being the culprit with all of these updates not installing and getting the files corrupted. I am pretty convinced that this update caused problems trying to fix problems from the previous update. Something was recognized as being wrong and that's why KB4090914 was delivered without any notice and any restart being required. That didn't fix things and we get two more updates out of band. I may be wrong, but I still think the root of these issues is KB4090913. I was only able to fix my system by taking it back to before KB4090913 was downloaded to my system.

Ok, how did you do that- restore point? disk image? uninstall that update and each update following? Thanks.

    Several Win10 Updates Won't Install

I first tried the only restore point on the system, which I thought was prior to KB4090913 being downloaded. I found out later it wasn't. None of the other restore suggestions worked. I couldn't uninstall updates as KB4090914 would not uninstall. I eventually discovered that KB4090913 was initially downloaded two days before that restore point. I ended up restoring from a system image done several days before KB4090913 was initially downloaded. I have been using a father/son backup set of system images and luckily had one from before the corruption began. I now do a grandfather/father/son system image backup process. I was going to wait until the next cumulative patches came out, but when they did, they would not install either, so the only fix was to take the system back to before KB4090913. When I did, the latest cums and security patches installed without any issues.

    Ah.. disk imaging.. excellent...! Thanks.

Lacking that, my suggestion of using an in-place upgrade repair install (post #2) should effectively achieve the same thing.

I agree, it should, but it did not work for me when I tried the in-place upgrade repair install. Not sure why, but that was an early on suggestion I received here. The system image restore is probably more brute force, and simpler to do, but it worked. Thank goodness.
