    Skip the Anniversary Update?

    Sorry to step only now.
Over the last 1,5 day (really I spent probably over 10 hours on this) I have been trying to update my Windows 10 x64
I give up. Have tried all ' advices' on Internet, the SFC, DISM stuff and incl clean boots, whatever.
One day I will do a clean install - hopefully at least that will work out.
Meanwhile, I'd like to permanently defer the update. I don't want to encounter the thing I had the other day that Windows, in the middle of backup reboots and (vainly) attempts to install the update.

There are sooo many reports of failed installs...

Actually I am not interested in seeking a solution: that I have done over the last 1,5 day and spent so many hours on waiting / reboots etc.
Just now I want to stop updates.

How did you manage that via GPEdit?

    thanks

You can disable Windows update in Services. Double click on Windows update, choose disable.

    Skip the Anniversary Update?

My system downloaded 1607 and there were 4 failed attempts at installing. I didn't actually see these attempts other than the failures being recorded in the settings section. Then it started trying to download the whole thing all over again. I have a satellite internet connection at the moment, and this is a serious bandwidth hog, to the point where all the other devices in the house become nonfunctional online.

Since my laptop is also experiencing a few issues which leads me to believe the hard drive has some bad spots, I just set the satellite connection to metered. I have neither the time nor the patience to fight with this right now, we're just nursing this laptop along and backing up stuff. As soon as I set the connection to metered, all other online functionality returned. Defender updates do continue to get downloaded. I just have to give Outlook permission to connect every time it is reopened, but that isn't a big deal.

And as I await the delivery of a new laptop with Windows 10 preloaded, I dearly hope MS gets their act together when it comes to 1607 so that the new rig doesn't have to deal with this. *Rolleyes

Yes, MS finally pushed the 1607 update to the last 2 PCs here just last week. I became aware of this when my wife showed me her laptop and under the Power button on Start there were 2 new options: "Update and Restart" and "Update and Shut Down". That's when I knew the jig was up.

The second desktop PC had the update available, but because I set that PC with a faux metered connection it had not downloaded yet.

This weekend I decided to get it over with and did the upgrade on both PCs.

I experienced the download problem on the desktop. The download takes quite a while and seemed to have timed out at 72% one time and at 78% the next attempt. Close all and restart PC after each attempt and the 3rd time was the charm. Finally downloaded completely and then began "installation", which is actually just expanding files. You must restart to get the installation going.

The Upgrade update takes a long time comparatively (about an hour on the older laptop, about 30 minutes on the desktop).

When the system comes back up almost everything is as it was. Except for a few very annoying settings:
    • System restore gets shut off for Drive C: and you must know to go back in and turn it on.
    • Defragmentation gets turned back on for my SSDs, and set to run on a schedule. If you have SSDs you must know to go back in and change the settings to Never run on the SSD.
    • Password Protected Sharing gets turned back on in Advanced Networking for "All Networks". If you turned this off like I do for the private network this will cause some file transfer problems until you figure out your settings were changed without notice.

    Well, I tried following methods:

    1) Used the 'pending' update at Start-Settings-Windows Update, I don't remember how many times
    Results: Windows update failed
    =
    2) Used the"Update Now" from the Windows Media Creation tool website, i.e. running: Windows10Upgrade9252.exe
    Results: Windows update failed
    =
    3) Performed a sfc /scannnow
Results: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    4) Performed a DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Results: The restore operation completed successfully. The operation completed successfully.

    4) Did a clean boot: disabling all non-MS services and all startup tasks
    Results: Windows update failed

    5) Ran Microsoft’s Troubleshooter
results: One or more Windows Update components are configured incorrectly. (Fixed)
    update still not succesful
    then, following (5) above
Went to c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download - deleted contents and did the Start-Settings-Windows Update again.
    Results: Windows update failed

    7) Also tried below method (described at: https://goo.gl/meXnbl)
Message title: Updates KB3081448 KB3081449 fail to install ((aug 2015)
    Step :1
    a. Press Windows Key + X.
    b. Click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin)
Note: Click ‘Yes’ if it prompts for UAC(User Account Control).
    c. Type following commands into the command prompt one after the other

    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    net stop cryptsvc

    Keep Command Prompt window opened.

    Step :2
    Rename Windows Update folders
At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press Enter after each command:

    ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old
    ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Then type the following, commands and then press ENTER after each command:

    net start wuauserv
    net start bits
    net start cryptsvc

    =
    Results: Windows update failed

    either ...

    Hi
    Try This:

    First, go here:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history
and see if there is a 1511 update not yet installed on your system. While not necessary, this could help later.

    Then:
Run the .bat file from this tutorial:
Windows Update - Reset in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Then (optional- to test WU to see if normal updates install):
    • Go into Windows Update and switch your update settings to "Never Check for Updates", and restart the PC
    • Go here: Microsoft Update Catalog and download an update not yet installed on the PC (these are self installing files) (Note: the Update Catalog only works with the Windows Browser IE)
    • Run the download to install the update.
    • Go back into Windows Update and change the setting back to what they were.
    • If the update installs without problems you should be all set for the 1607 Upgrade

    Then:
Either go back into Windows Update and try and install the 1607 upgrade from there,
    or
    Go back here:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history
and download the Anniversary Update file and run that to install the update.

    See if that helps

    Skip the Anniversary Update?

Further to the above and as well as trying TV2 suggestions above

    8) Executed "Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components.bat"
    at : https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...dows-10-a.html
then went to Windows 10 Media Creation Tool website
    at: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...oad/windows10/
    and performed "Update now"
Results: Windows update failed - Error 0x80004005

    9) Executed Batch File to Reset Windows Update (WUReset.bat)
see: Error 0x80004005 Window 10 update Failure
after than went over to Microsoft "Get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update today" website
    at: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history
    Downloaded and executed: Windows10Upgrade28084.exe
Results: Windows update failed - Error 0x80004005

I checked the Eventlog immediately after the error and found that the following

Code: EventID 3 Virtual Disk Service - Service started EventID 16 Microsoft Windows Kernal General - The access history in hive \??\C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Rollback\Boot\BCD was cleared updating 0 keys and creating 0 modified pages. EventID 4 Virtual Disk Service - Service stopped[/quote]

    Note:
In between all attempts above, I restored a Windows image that did nót contain any 'update-stuff', i.e. the one I create just before I started trying to update Windows with 1607. There are no downloaded files, things like that.

Wonder whether it might have something to do with me removing all apps?
    see: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...dows-10-a.html

All in all, probably it would have been a quicker job to do an install from scratch...

I have had my connection set to metered...and 1607 is currently downloading...???!!!! Not impressed. *Mad

It had already downloaded, tying up a good chunk of usable bandwidth for the entire household, tried unsuccessfully to install itself 4 times when I wasn't present.

It is not supposed to be downloading over a metered connection.

Yup downloaded then installed on my pc and wifes laptop. Now both without internet. Reverted laptop back to 1511. Im still trying 2 wifi adapters and looking for working drivers.

They seriously need to release a fix for this

They need to change it back so you checkbox the updates you want seperately.

    Yes, Ive seen this too.
I speculate that because our "metered connections" are registry hacks that Windows Update can take a while to 'figure it out'.
It isn't really downloading anything, just spinning in circles in confusion.

    Skip the Anniversary Update?

If it were me I would try restoring my disk image and then downloading the 1607 'update' directly and trying the installation 'fresh'.

Or even running the TenForums batch file linked above right after the image restore and then installing it direct.

I wonder if something is messed up from all the changes and various fixes. Although I can't think of why uninstalling apps would affect WU, there may have been other customizations made that could - we just can't see that from here.
The benefit of an in-place upgrade is that all your programs and settings* are maintained.

I have been running the Windows Update - Reset in Windows 10 - batch file. See under 8, 1st item above.
Disabled automatic updated now (services.msc) and will do an install from scratch, once I have time but above all... the spirit/energy to do so. Installing Windows 10 is 1 thing, most of the work is the setup of all applications but above all all the different settings within the applications...
Just have a look at Office (all the settings in in Word, Outlook ...)

There are sooo many complaints about this 1607 update, probably many of us are just skipping it.

I hear you. A clean install of Windows takes me the better part of a week to complete - 1 hour to install the OS, 35 hours to install and set up everything else.

Are you saying that the direct installation of the 1607 update does not work?
If so, where does it fail?
