    starting over again, with W10

Just got new HP W10 laptop back from HP repair. Now I have to start over. I'm not good at this stuff, and I got real confused before on here. It has this "edge" browser. I want the IE, and have it open to m y yahoo email homepage. It seems to be a major issue just to do a desktop shortcut, it's not simple like W8. I just cant seem to figure things out to get things the way I want. I need real basic easy to understand lingo. This W10 really messing me up. So far, things still seem messed up right after HP overhaul, and/or I just can't get a grasp on W10 system after using W8.

I want to use IE11, have it open to my yahoo email page
Want google as default search, not the 'bing thing'
want to be able to make desktop shortcuts, for things like google, yahoo, etc.
Are these 3 things considered complicated? I fouled it up before.

    :)

Modern Setup Host has stopped working

Hi Jim - no luck yet!

The CBS.Log file report showed no violations, and no repairs needed - is it worth sending this on to the website link?

I then used the Alex Megoderp method, and after starting the W10 download process yet again, it all fell over at the same point - "Modern setup Host....".

Running "C:\$Windows...," immediately got the "Set up couldn't start properly" error: I tried running it again, and this time I also got an error message "C:\$Windows.....is unavailable. If the location is on this PC..... try again. ....It may have been
    moved or deleted"!!

I looked in file explorer, and neither the WS or BT files show up (these are both on my upgraded W10 desktop - are they part of the W10 download? Could I copy them over?).

    Once again, thanks for trying!

    Barry

  3. Windows 10 1703 cannot be installed over W10 1607

    I have W10 1607 SE 14393.1593.

Windows Update tries to install W10 v1703, but it prepares the installation than download updates stays at 0% and preparation starts over again and again.

I see failure to install on August 10-14-16 and 17.

I downloaded directly from the catalogue but system reverted to 1607.

How can I properly install 1703?

Type int in Cortana box...open IE and on taskbar at bottom right click mouse on IE icon on taskbar and choose pin to taskbar.
Open page you wish as home page....there is usually an option on it ie- Yahoo.

    Hello *Smile

You are not alone in finding W10 frustrating to start using and become familiar with.

There are a number of good tutorials on this site which are aimed to make things simple to follow by extensive use of screen shots to show you how to do things.

Try this one to get Internet Explorer as your default browser: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1...dows-10-a.html

If you want to add a website address as a shortcut on the desktop simply right click on the desktop and select New and then Shortcut.

starting over again, with W10 [IMG]

In the window that opens type in the website address that you want for your shortcut:

Click next and give the shortcut a name, you are then done!

dencal - I have IE on the taskbar now (desktop shrtct??). Is it supposed to be blank :"HTTP 403 Forbidden" because I don't have homepage? And, when I bring up yahoo email, there is no place to click to make it homepage, but on the "403" page, it has the yahoo email homepage address in the box.

Did you try the tutorial in post#3 to set IE as your default browser before you created the shortcut? You may need to do this to ensure the shortcut works!

Been away awhile, now my IE homepage opens to yahoo email log-in box instead of the mail itself. Working erratic and slow, starting to thing the factory re-do of this brand new laptop didn't help a lot. About 2 minutes for cold start, then a restart takes....longer?? Cant get it to open up with then actual mail again.

Yahoo will periodically (about every 2 weeks) log you out. You will then get the log-in screen instead of going directly to mail. In case you need to re-set your homepage, navigate to the page you want, click the gear icon in the upper right (just under the red x) and click "Internet Options" near the bottom of the menu. When that opens, the top entry on the first tab is "Home Page". Click "Use Current", then close. All done.

If you would like a more traditional Windows interface, try Classic Shell Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

It gives you back the traditional Windows menu style that disappeared when Windows 8 (cursed be thy name) arrived on the scene.

MrWhoopee - for some reason, it worked this time, I had been doing just as you said before....I thought. Maybe it was the 'Stay Signed In' box....think I left it checked, maybe I didn't before. But, I never had this happen before when it was my home page.

I'll have to check Classic Shell again, I had some version of it when I had W8. Has to be a version for W10 that's better/easier than this Microsoft mess......right??

It's the same program, just updated for Win10 compatibility. Microsoft just doesn't seem to understand the difference between change and improvement.
