  1. Still waiting for validation of this pc to download

So what exactly are they trying to validate in each pc for mine to take so long?

    I have an alienware 18, i7-4900mq, gtx 780m sli, 16 gb ram, windows 7.
I heard that maybe you needed to update your bios so i did that and still stuck on "we are validating windows 10 for your pc".

Is there any way to learn what exactly is it trying to validate before moving forward? To know if it is some important driver issue or not.

Especially since Microsoft decide to say that we should use windows 7 "at your own risk, at your own peril."

    :)

  2. Still waiting for Windows 10 download!

    Bill

The fastest way to get the upgrade is to download the ISO. An ISO is like a dvd so to use it you will need to right click>mount. Start the upgrade from within windows.

I would use the techbench link

The Official Final Windows 10 download is now available (10586)

Use the download tool to create ISO media to update your windows.

    Download Windows 10

Still waiting for Windows 10 download!

I reserved my copy of windows 10 in Aug. and confirmed it in Sept. 4/20/16 and still no notice that the download is available. I've also tried to download from the Microsoft site, the file downloads but does not run (either when run or save and run).

    Any help would be appericated.

How long is that? The process not only checks whether the hardware is compatible but also programs you have on it. I have seen the process stall when a computer was infected and again when some [unidentified] update hadn't been applied to Win7 w/SP1.

  5. Oh i havent done anything, i got the windows 10 popup who has been saying "thank you for reserving a copy but we re validating windows 10 for your pc" since july.

Is there any way to see what causes problems to this check? like a list of programs or hardware it has issues with?

You could try this Windows 10 Pre-Upgrade Validation using SETUP.EXE - Michael Niehaus' Windows and Office deployment ramblings - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

The easiest would be though to make a backup and just download the correct home or Pro ISO and try the update. It is described in option 1 here Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums

If it does have a problem with some driver (or something) it will tell you in the set-up logs but your PC should definitely be able to run 10..

Ah good, one question though, where is that setup.exe they are referring to? Did the windows 10 upgrade download it somewhere, do i need to download it manually from some windows 100 website?

The setup.exe is in the ISO so you'd need to download it anyway (there are links to download it from Microsoft here Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums).

It is best to download an ISO as if you have to do the upgrade more than once for any reason you don't have to download the whole lot (3GB) again.

  10. ok i got 3 questions
1)Do i need to burn it in a disc? Or can i just extract it and activate it since i have no discs to burn now to be honest.

2)Also where exactly is that setup.exe command line?Does it come later in the installation process?
First thing i got when i opened it is a blue window that asks me to download and install updates? Should i do that? Are these updates just for smooth installation or does it refer to windows upgrade overall?

3)Will it ask me for some sort of activation key? Because i dont think i have one since the windows 10 popup on my pc simply says "Thank you for reserving your free upgrade, we are validating windows 10 for your pc"

You don't need to burn it to disk - you can put it on a USB or (as you are on 7 and can't mount ISO easily) extract to your desktop as described in section 7 here Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums

When you mount the ISO then setup.exe is at the root of the drive (or root of the folder if you extracted to desktop as above). If you say yes to the upgrades question it will get updates from Windows update first - otherwise it will get them after the upgrade is complete. I'd do it first just in case there is some fix to upgrade process.

The command line for setup .exe is only to run the check. If you want to run the upgrade you just double click on setup.exe.

It will not ask for a key if you are doing an upgrade, no. If it does something is wrong (most likely it is trying to do a clean install not an upgrade). That would only happen if you burned it to disk or USB and booted from it. If you run the upgrade from within 7 it should not ask for a key. The tutorial mentioned above shows what you should see.

You can find your existing key with this tool though which is always worth doing. Showkey - Windows 10 Forums

  12. Uhh I kinda have no idea how exactly am i supposed to run this "command", where do i type the "SETUP.EXE /Auto Upgrade /Quiet /NoReboot /DynamicUpdate Disable /Compat ScanOnly"

"SETUP.EXE includes a command line switch that tells it to “check for compatibility”"
    Where exactly?

You'd have to get the ISO, mount it or extract it.

Go to an administrator command prompt and change the directory to wherever setup.exe (from the ISO you downloaded) is.

Then you can enter the command Code: start /Wait SETUP.EXE /Auto Upgrade /Quiet /NoReboot /DynamicUpdate Disable /Compat ScanOnly echo %errorlevel%[/quote] Then you'll see the return code as described saying if it found any issues with upgrading.

It still might just be easier to run the setup immediately though as if it does fail you can then post the upgrade logs and they will say exactly what driver it had a problem with.

  14. Ah ok i see, i was thinking of some special command prompt in setup.exe.

So i used cmd to move to the folder i have extracted the windows 10 iso.
Then typed the code as you have suggested but i didnt get any result, what am i doing wrong?

You might also want to make a image backup BEFORE upgrading your OS. You could use any good backup program to do this. Lots of folks use Macrium Reflect free version. Or any good image program that you prefer. I would not trust using Windows backup thou. This way if something goes wrong with your upgrade, you can restore your original OS back, on your computer. Even if say a week or two goes by, and you decide you want to go back to your old OS. Keep your image backup in a safe place, NOT on your C drive. I always tell folks to backup......1st......*Smile
