Windows 10: Today's (1 Jan 2017) Cumulative Update Won't Install

If you run WUMT, you'll see a set of controls in the left hand program pane, to wit:



Reading from left to right, these controls mean:
1. Check for updates
2. Download updates only
3. Download and install updates
4. Trash/remove update entry from right hand download list
5. Hide update from appearing in future download list
6. Copy contents of download lists(s) to file

So if you use number 2 (the big down-facing arrow) it should do what you've asked about.

I used number 2 to download a definition update, but I don't know where the download is.
Have you tried using number 2?

 

i worked on a W10 system where this Cumulative Update wouldn't install, it failed every update attempt.
this system had MBAM3 Premium (real-time).
i uninstalled MBAM3, and bam, the Cumulative Update installed successfully and quickly.

WUMT works just like Windows update, so the update packages should be in the %windir%\softwaredistribution\download directory. For most typical Windows installs that expands to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download like so:

Which one below is the cumulative update, and how can I manually install a similar update next time?

In the absence of more definitive info, you may be able to tell what's what by the combination of date (you know when you downloaded it, right?) and size (in any given group of downloads on the same day, the Cumulative Update is highly likely to be the biggest of the bunch).

According to the update history, it was downloaded and installed on January 12.
According to the screenshot in post #19, there was only one folder created on that day.
According to the screenshot below, that folder was only 258 MB in size. Could it be so small?

Hmm, as I implied above I went for disabling WU, but yesterday evening it tried downing the very same update again, install it, and failed. History was gone, I checked... SFC ran successfully two days ago. I guess in order to disable WU completely you may have to disable the Service from starting.I may have to imply more forceful methods, or as they say, get a bigger hammer. *Banghead

I think I will run the script again, check files manually and delete, and after that get the update from Catalog for an offline installation.

 

Quick cheap (free) hammer.

 

I have disabled auto-update simply by using metered connections, and I will be notified of available updates, which will not be downloaded automatically.
