I consider MS, Google (Chrome), FB & the like to be extremely personally invasive, and so refuse to get a MS account. It is possible to contact MS support but only if I give them my eMail or phone number. Sufficiently "old-fashioned", I value what privacy I can maintain without being tracked and all my purchases and friends publicly available. And my "problem" with freezing is not unique in any/every case.

In other words, through my computer & devices these above entities wish to control me. I value self-control instead *Wink

AND, the Beat Goes On (OK, I was testing by leaving it unattended, it was working for a few sec, but maybe was over-confident and pushed it too hard/fast at first after its non-sleep "rest")

plus apparently Defender missed a new definition Update and IT "pushed too hard"

Since the above freezes (and many but not close to all) involved Update failures, and since I am not interested in "other MS products" (except Skype which I update separately when I agree), I have now unchecked that (previously checked) box >

  5. I know this is a big job but updates just shouldn't be failing like this.

The fact they are would have me either looking into an inplace repair / upgrade or a clean install.

We have tutorials for both. Currently if you download the media creation it will download Fall Creators Update, V1709.

Everyone hates clean installs but it does provide an excellent base.

Before trying diagnostic procedures or OS installs I always recommend that you create a backup of your data off machine, create an Image with a tool like Macrium Reflect and have bootable media that matches your current Windows environment.

First of all, any updates I need I have ZERO problem finding and downloading, using the self-standing downloader for all advised by Windows Update and through Windows Defender itself (I check Defender and update it daily). Kaspersky updates itself sometimes a few times/day with no problems. So it is ONLY these Window Store apps, etc. which I cannot delete that must be a problem, and/or continuing conflicts with KIS trying to prevent app updates which I refuse since I refuse to use those apps (but cannot delete). A few months ago I totally BLOCKED all Window Update (possible with Pro) and it still froze, so I restored Update after.

Still the situation is a lot cleaner and if it stays that way I can accept an occasional easily-restored freeze

Next question: how good is it and are there any new problems with v1709? That is, should I install it or wait ....?

  7. One member opinion, I have 1709 running on two devices, no issues. I don't use Edge so the issues some have had I missed. I use a local password and no menu overlays or special backgrounds so I haven't seen any login issues.

Like all OS releases, there are issues. The Insiders drove out a bunch but now it's in the real world and hitting the infinite variety of Window systems some are bumping into glitches.

Unless pressed I would wait. No need to add stress to your day. Of course if you don't mind a challenge, and I'm not saying you will have one, give it a go. Have the backups I recommended just in case.

  10. Okay, your machine is BSOD'ing. There is a section withing the forum that specializes in this area.

Not sure why you are needing a new driver for your network and I would be disabling hardware updates. Windows + R, type sysydm.cpl, enter. Click on Hardware tab, then click Device Installation settings, then stop hardware updates.

Obviously I'm not a believer in updating drivers for the sake of updating. If one needs updating you can control.

Please disable the updates. Then follow the BSOD submission requirements. If you forget something edit your original note until one of the experts picks up your case.

If you don't want to go that route I might consider a clean install. Yes lots of work but it gives you an excellent base.

Most of the online suggestions start with updating drivers. And I do not think windows has at all been trying that, it was me. All the drivers I have updated came through HP and are specific for this machine which, though "pre-owned", I really love!. HP has great customer service, I have found, esp. including automatic update suggestions and downloads as pertinent; they all come from the HP site. The only ones I would like to update but cannot as there are none, is for the Huawei Mobile Partner dongle and the optical mouse. The BSOD instances were brief and no problem, simply part of v1703 malfeasance. At least a half-dozen of the freezes in the past included 3 - 5 sec. of BlueScreen ("please wait, we are fixing ...") when re-starting, automatically bypassed, and I don't consider that a major issue now, just a hiccup. Anyway I just now tried sysydm.cpl and my WinX doesn't have it, beside which I have no knowledge of my system trying to update drivers, only HP and the one instance that when it came through Windows Update, WU seemed to find what the standalone downloader found: not for this system.

Have reverted all settings now back to what it was a week ago following all your excellent suggestions and both dism/clean-up image and sfc/ scannow declare the OS is in good shape. But what does Windows know ....? (yeh I am sure it is due to conflicts with KIS, my refusal to use any of WinX's fine features and to refuse auto-updates, only possible I think with WinX Pro .... and that is the likely source of this problem). Well if there were no problems we wouldn't need our brain ;-)

That was not a BSOD, just a quick BlueScreen (only some seconds longer than several before, "please wait, we are working on it") caused in this case by me trying 2x to install an update unsuitable to this system (according to standalone installer when I downloaded directly from Windows Update Catalog). If it was an essential and missing update, WU would persist and keep reminding me! It was for a different system on a different model. When I finally let Windows Update try (it had indicated the update), it simply then indicated no "updates available". The dump was simply an anomaly. I've now used System Restore to set things back to 17 Oct. again and all seems well and reasonably stable again. In agreement with Caledon Ken I see no need to further update any drivers except as infrequently indicated automatically via HP Support Assistant on my desktop. And HP does the download & install well.

Earlier in the thread (post #24) it was suggested that the event logs be viewed.
If you can run the DM log collector and post the zip we can then view the event log.
At the same time we can troubleshoot the other logs related to the freezing.

BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums

Open the HP website > software and drivers > enter the computers serial or product number and the operating system > post the URL into the thread so that we can view the drivers.

On many HP computers there are BIOS UEFI diagnostics. The latest version is 6.4.
Download and install the latest version if this version is not already installed.
The HP support assistant does not automatically update this software/driver.
In the evening power on the computer and repetitively click the F2 or F10 key and navigate to the BIOS UEFI diagnostics. Run the tests in loop until failure mode. The next day if the testing stopped there was a failure and the rest of testing will be incomplete. If the test is still running and there have been at least 2 loops press the keyboard escape key to abort the testing. Then confirm the results in the UEFI log. Report the results into the thread.

NOTE: freezes ONLY occur when no user or online input to machine after ca. 5 min (idle), so normally no problem downloading or watching free online streaming movies, etc.

EDIT: having reverted all settings now back to what it was a week ago (following Ken's advice then), checked/repaired system with scannow, dism, scannow (check), and just updated Realteck Card Reader, now put it in Sleep Mode for more than 5 but less than 10 min .... NO problem "waking" and acting perfectly!

all the drivers have been recently updated from HP (incl. Intel(R) & Realtek)

BIOS also updated by me: M71 Ver. 01.21 Release Date 07/13/2017

This computer + WinX installed cost me ca. USD$1,000- used (was a mistake I will not repeat, buying ir from that defunct store, but ma very happy with the devioce!! if I had known then, when i had ther money, i would have bought a new one on sale) and with no income I simply at this time cannot afford another (new ones here close to USD$2,000-) .... so I will NOT run it all night since I found that on most of the past freezes the CPU keeps running (I guess) because the fan stops and the device gets hot; luckily since I am never away too long (more than 10 min.) and now prepared for such, it has never gotten close to critically hot (by feel).
