Windows 10: Turn Off Hard Disk After Idle in Windows 10

Dear Brink, I forgot to ask you one more question!
My pc is a laptop,so could the HDD overheat with the ''turn off hard disk after..'' set to never ?

And would it be a bad idea to have two power plans?Because the HDD will have to turn on and turn off more frequently?
Isn't better for it to spin non-stop,than frequently turn on/off?

If it is a good idea to re-enable the turn hard disk off option ,and have two power plans,
which free software would you reccommend to me to automatically manage two power plans in order the hard-disk to be turned on only while gaming,and turned off for the rest of the time?

By the way my OS is installed on a SSD!

Please tell me!

Either way is fine, but it really depends on your needs and wants.

If you wanted to toggle between using two power plans for this, then you could use the context menu added from the tutorial below. There's no need to install any 3rd party software.

Dear Brink,but is there some way to automatically switch between the plans with a program?When playing games and while idle?

 

I'm not aware of a way, but the context menu will allow you to manually do so before and after playing games.

I have an issue on a Windows 10 desktop with a Seagate ST1000LX015 hybrid hard drive, as my secondary drive.

My primary drive is a 120GB SSD, which is unaffected.

The drive seems to go into standby mode after about 10 minutes.

I've tried changing the settings in the the power options/advanced settings with no luck - I tried setting the "Turn Off Hard Disk" to "0", "600" and "999". It made no difference.

Any suggestions?

Looking at the manual below for the Seagate ST1000LX015, it appears the drive should have its own software to use to change its power management mode.

Thanks for the info... No luck on the seagate front - all the utilities I can find are for either external (USB) HDDs or are diagnostics only.

 

It appears that it may be firmware controlled power mode then.

I have strange problem with completely turn off my secondary HDD disk (WD red edition) on my Windows 10.0.16299 machine. Previously it just works after some time (time from power plan) or using this tool (HotSwap!) I was able to turn off disk so it was completely silent. Now when I use hot swap disk is disappearing from system but I hear that it s still working. I also noticed that when I turn off disk just after windows starts it is turning off completely but after few seconds it starts again. I was trying to turn off indexing and some programs on windows start but it is not helping. I also run Procmon from sysinternals but I can’t see any read/write from this disk. Can any body tell me what can prevent disk to complete turning off?

 

Does the drive turn off without the HotSwap program installed?

 

When I have finished my testing my drive have finally turned off after some time so partially I’m happy but I don’t understand why HotSwap way stop working ;(

 

You might contact the developer to see if there's something he may do to update the software.
