How to: 'Choose Power Plan' context menu - Add in Windows 10

How to Add or Remove 'Choose Power Plan' context menu in Windows 10

A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings that manages how your computer uses power. Power plans can help you save energy, maximize system performance, or achieve a balance between the two.

Windows comes with the default power plans below. You can change the settings for these power plans to what you like for each one, then use the context menu to switch between using a different power plan as need.

Balanced - Offers full performance when you need it and saves power when you don't. This is the best power plan for most people.

Power saver - Saves power by reducing PC performance and screen brightness. If you're using a laptop, this plan can help you get the most from a single battery charge.

High performance - Maximizes screen brightness and might increase PC performance. This plan uses a lot more energy, so your battery won't last as long between charges.

This tutorial will show you how to add 'Choose Power Plan' to the desktop context menu for all users to be able to open Power Options or instantly switch between using the High Performance, Balanced, or Power Saver plan in Windows 10.

*note While you must be signed in as and administrator to be able to add or remove the "Choose Power Plan" context menu, all users will be able to use the context menu.

    Hi,

I suggest you to reset the Power settings and then try again to check for the results.

    1. Press Windows key + X from the keyboard.

    2. Choose Command prompt from the context menu.

    3. In the command prompt, type powercfg –restoredefaultschemes
    and press Enter.

    4. Exit command prompt.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to create a new power plan and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Note: Applies to Windows 10 as well.

'Choose Power Plan' context menu - Add in Windows 10

    Hey qcksilver, *Smile

Ok. Here we go. It's a bit of work, but it's not hard, so don't worry. If you have any questions or need more details with the steps I give, then please feel free to do so.

To find GUID of custom power plans:

    1) First, open Registry Editor (regedit), and browse to the registry location below.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\User\PowerSchemes

    2) In the PowerSchemes key, select a long number GUID subkey in the left pane, and look to see what data value it has for the FriendlyName string value to see if it's for one of your custom power plans.

    3) Repeat step 2 until you have the GUID number for each of your custom power plans.

    4) Post a screenshot like below for each custom power plan showing their GUID and FriendlyName data value. This is what I'll need to add them to context menu for you.

    5) If you like, you could also just export the PowerSchemes key, and upload it in your post instead.

I made a custom profile and I'm not sure its working right. Plan B shows the .dll info missing from it, it appears the profile is working when used.

Here is the regkey. Maybe someone can clean this mess up for me?*092

'Choose Power Plan' context menu - Add in Windows 10

In that case, take a look at post #2 to find the GUID number and name for your custom power plan. Post back with the information in step 4 there, and I'll be happy to post back with a modified version of the tutorial that includes your custom power plan. *Smile

Ok. I just needed to verify that was the one. What is the name of this plan since it's in binary in the reg code?
