Upgrade Assistant keeps going back to 0%

When I click on the upgrade assistant link that magically appeared on my desktop I go through clicking the required buttons and the upgrade starts to download eventually (very slowly) it is obviously a very large file as after a while it burns up all my bandwidth so I have to stop it and wait until the next day... I click the upgrade link again and it resumes from where it left off again...

Problem being about 5 times now it has reached between 70 - 80% and then decides to reset itself back to zero again for no apparent reason ? there is no error that is being shown or any indication as for why it keeps doing this, the current version of Win10 on my system is 10240 that was shipped with the laptop...

One more thing to add there is actually two shortcut links on the desktop to the upgrade assistant for some reason the second one appeared after it reset itself the second or 3rd time as far as I recall...

I am thinking maybe remove the assistant and whatever it has downloaded and wait for it to appear again, but I have no idea how to correctly do that within Win10...

Any ideas and assistance on how to fix this is greatly appreciated guys, thanks.

    :)

Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant Keeps Coming Back

I've been having the same issue. I've removed and/or disabled and/or modified the triggers for Windows Update Assistant, but it always comes back eventually.

So I did some more looking into it just now and discovered there is a service that runs this. I'm not sure if it is the service specifically that is re-enabling Windows Update Assistant, but I disabled the service and I'll see what happens.

Try it yourselves. It couldn't hurt.

The service to disable is called "Update Orchestrator Service for Windows Update"

You can access the services applet by the following:

    -Start

    -Run

    -services.msc

-Look for Update Orchestrator Service for Windows Update

    -Disable it completely

Hope this works for us all.

Might try looking at this link for guidance:

Is it possible to uninstall the Windows 10 update assistant? When i delete it it just automaticly reinstalls itself when i start the pc again

Looks like this issue has been noted for awhile.......

Like you, I recently (within last week or so) have started having this issue.......

Looks like another Microsoft UPDATE FIASCO is in the works.......

I've got the same issue on my HP 8100 Elite; build 1607 refuses to update to 1709; and this perpetual updating and failing cycle has really gotten OLD!!!!!!

    Good luck......

Hi, that you have 10240 (an old build) begs basic questions about your PC.

Why has it not been kept updated? Have you disabled Windows updates for the last couple of years or so?

    Please try some basic checks.
    1. Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and post a screenshot of its GUI
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post to the left of the video icon

    2. If ok:
    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
    or

    or
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

    3. Separate downloading the iso and the update and installation process.
    Download it manually:
Download Windows 10 ISO File Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

When you have that you can use it repeatedly, and you also have a useful bootable tool for certain repairs if you create a DVD or bootable USB drive.

    4. Before you try upgrading again - which is a risk - please create a disk image of what you have now. (We strongly urge people to routinely use disk imaging- so many advantages). E.g. Macrium reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for image sets.

If things go wrong, you can get back to where you were fairly readily.
(Disk imaging helps even if your disk fails or your PC is unbootable e.g. and also creates a full backup)

    What went wrong?

  5. Personally, I find this Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant useless. Why should someone install it and keep it if there is always Update button? For me is a good idea after every significant update to have a clean install of Windows and reinstall of apps and programs. My point of view...

Firstly thanks for taking the time to initiate the start of investigating this problem.... However I have just noticed that windows update is at 41% downloading Feature update to Windows 10, version 1703 apparently I am wondering if this is where things are going wrong, so the plan is allow it to finish (probably going to take hell knowns how many days with my slow and limited connection) and see what happens... if it's still not playing nice then I shall follow your instructions thanks.

To answer you're first question the laptop is 6 months old and one of the latest models apparently and that is the build number of Windows it came with... as for why I dunno its down to MSI logic as per usual.

Quite likely, I've seen similar when manually checking for updates. Recently I had a message that an update (just a Defender definitions one) couldn't be installed because another update was already in progress.

HP apparently do just that, as reported here....
Why would a new Laptop have an upgraded version of Windows 10?

Just an update on this problem... the laptop had to go back in for repair for the second time within a year !!! the DVD drive broke again...

Anyway I mentioned the update problem to the repair centre technician and he said it was becasue I had partitioned my second HDD hahaha I did not know weather to laugh at him or beat the crap out of him thankfully though it's not them that carry out the repairs they send the MSI junk off elsewhere.... so I get it back almost 3 months later DVD working but still not able to update...

I started searching for a way to download WIN10 without using the stupid media creation tool that has no resume feature making it impossible for me to use along with the upgrade assistant that does not work for me anyway.... I discovered that if you use IE11 and then in dev tools emulate an Apple device you can access direct links to WIN10 ISO's therefore being able to use a download manager IDM in my case so now I have successfully been able to upgrade to version 1607 at last and it's cured many of the other problems also a few days later I get a windows pop up asking me to set my privacy settings for the Creators edition for when it is ready for my system ! but it has not tried to download it as yet which I am pleased about as I will probably have to do the browser trick again in order to get it.

Just thought I would post the solution in case anyone else is stuck in a similar situation.

You can hide the update so it won't be applied. Tutorial in the tutorial section - search for 'hide')

If you have Pro upwards you can defer feature upgrades in Settings.

Thanks, yes I found the windows hide updates tool a while back never used it yet though...
An interesting thing a MSI tech told me via email months ago was every released Win10 version makes changes to the Kernal so there is a lot more than just superficial changes going on with Win10.

They make feature changes (not necessarily telling anyone..) and 'under the hood' changes. The problem comes when you suddenly find something no longer working after upgrading.

And it seems they change the driver list too.

Yes regarding drivers I now have a problem with the Realtek ones along with Nahimic the sound is crackling / distorted at any volume level ! though if I un-install both then the problem go's away.... I am in contact with MSI over this issue currently.... yet I have a little Acer laptop that works perfectly ! cost what $500 as opposed to the MSI at $2000 makes you wonder....
