  1. Use bootable USB to upgrade to 1511

I have images done automatically (Macrium paid version) every Sunday night while I am at work (I do cardiac care for complex cases at a Level I trauma center), and file based differential backups nightly. Lesson learned the hard way.

GREAT!!!!! So if you mess up your OS you have made the bootable rescue USB stick too, using Macrium. Incase you couldn't boot back into your OS. I use Macrium myself also.

This reset script is NOT on this forum, its on another site, so if the one you used is from here, this one is different. Not saying it will work any better, but might be worth a shot??

  6. Yes - I put a key ring into the slot on the thumb drive, and hang it on the cord for the backup drive. That way it always stays with the backup.

Here is some information about this script. For some folks it worked, for some it did not. Also, I would like to know what you are running for your Firewall and AV protection too.
Here is some text about this script....for you to read....

But due to some issues, generally related directly or Indirectly to some corruption in system files, windows update may not work properly. This discussion discusses resetting the Windows update completely using a reset script.
    It does the following things:
•Removes the older Windows update Folders, where the updates are downloaded.Newer ones are created automatically.
    •Re-registers the Windows update Files.
    •Resets your network connection.
    Instructions for usage:
1.Download the Script into your computer.Link is below.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...e87e15c?auth=1
2.At the location where it is saved, Right click and select Extract.Image
3.After the extract is complete, you will see a Wureset Windows 10.bat named File in the new windows that opens.
    4. Unblock the .bat file.
5.Right click WuReset.bat named file and select Run as administrator.

Still want to know which firewall and AV program you are using, as some 3rd party firewalls can block windows update!!

  13. Use bootable USB to upgrade to 1511

My real firewall is on my router. AV and PC firewall are the ones that came with the stock Win10 Pro 64 install (defender). No third party stuff, found its more trouble than its worth. I have gone so far as to DMZ my machine (with filtering alerts) and throw it directly on an addressable internet address for this for the few minutes it takes. Doesnt seem to make a difference.

  14. OK reran the script you posted, now WU is "Checking for updates" after the reboot -- and its downloading:

We'll see. It should only be a few, I'm on a non-shared 100/100 mbit fiber connection. And my main drive is a 500GB SSD, so thruput is pretty maxxed
