Windows 10: Weird memory popup in Windows 10

Discus and support Weird memory popup in Windows 10 in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; Oh, 's answer seems like a really logical solution. I never knew that. I always look for the most "extreme" solution. In this case the "extreme"... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Support' started by ahmd, Sep 1, 2016.

    Thanks.

For an 'extreme' solution you can't uninstall Cortana, she's built in to the OS. You can however disable her completely in the registry.

Unfortunately that also removes the '...and the internet' from the 'Search this computer and the internet' box. I prefer to just turn off as much of her' snooping ' abilities as possible.

Aha. That's what I wanted. Trusted Group Policy to the rescue! Thanks. It worked. I wish they had a search box on that gpedit.msc snap-in console. Otherwise it's virtually impossible to find stuff in there. And they keep adding new GPOs to it every time.

Oh, and to your comment about searching the internet. I have a really good solution for it. Here it is. Works like a charm. Just add it as a home page for your Chrome browser and you're just a click away from a very good Internet search. No gimmicks in your start menu required.

You can switch off Cortana, start button type Cortana and switch off at the window.

No. This doesn't do much. The way to go is what Bree suggested above via the GPO. That is how enterprise users deal with gimmicky stuff in Windows.

That's funny. I paid almost as much for my Galaxy Note 7 as I did for my PC. That's a hell of a "toy". In fact, I do more on my phone, and spend more time with my phone, than I do a PC. And I'm a professional software developer. So I have a hard time justifying such a productivity tool as a "toy".

You develop software on your Note 7? As a side note, I'm sure you're aware of this, right.

Here's the statement that I agree with:

I pointed out about the recall only so that your phone doesn't explode on you. I didn't mean to pick on you.

I noticed that Cortana is just more of a "personal friend" feature to the Windows Search; because I disabled Cortana through Local Group Policy, and all I see is a stripped down Cortana, no pun intended.

It's pretty much the same exact feature, with slightly less human-interaction, which probably takes up about the same memory.

I use Classic Start Menu which makes the Start Menu very simple and completely customizable to anything possible (the looks, the items listed there, etc) which has a small Search box with is perfect and lists things so quickly

Dude, that's an awesome looking Start menu! Is it on Windows 10? The stock start menu on Windows 10 is so bad that I don't even use it. I do what I used to do on Windows 8, pin things to the task bar and click them from there. Here's mine:

As for Cortana. Once I disabled it via the GPO and rebooted, it had two benefits. The search was much cleaner. It showed only relevant things on the local computer. It also got rid of those Bing like links that were displayed on the lock screen. They annoyed the bejebees out of me. (I usually click the lock screen to bring up a log in password. But sometimes the click may go to those annoying links which means I'll have to click away and repeat.) Also check the services panel. Cortana is no longer running. The search itself, most certainly uses indexing of the hard drive so it should work the same way (as fast) as it did on Windows 7. And yes that would use up some of your hard drive space. I also agree, if you bring up a task manager and see how many processes are running on a stock installation of Windows 10 your head will start to spin. There's so much sh*t going on in the background, it's unbelievable.

Yah, there's a bunch of things in Windows 10 that are running. But that's good that this solved your problem. And about that Start Menu that I have; it's a 3rd party program that isn't included in Windows 10.

It's called Classic Shell: Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

You should check it out; it let's you fully customize the way the Start Menu looks and so much more. Also BTW, It's free! =D
