    Win 10 Update Database Corruption

Brink, I'm sorry to say that I was away from my PC for a short time, and when I came back to it I found that Build 17063 was no longer installed!! I am now on Build 16299. I have both a DVD and a USB flash drive created from the Build 17063 link you gave me, but I think the problem is that when I restart my PC the Insider Preview Build 17063 starts downloading. I have now opted out of receiving Insider Preview Builds. Is there anything else I need to do before installing from the DVD or the USB flash drive?

Brink, when I installed Build 17063 before, from the DVD I created, I ran the installation with Windows 10 running. Would it be preferable to boot from the DVD instead? Also, when I was asked where I wanted to install the Build I chose my C drive, but was told it couldn't be installed on that drive. Should I have selected the C drive but then clicked Delete?

To do a clean install of Windows, you would indeed need to boot from the DVD or USB (recommended). This way you can follow the steps in the tutorial below to delete all partitions on the disk you want to install Windows 10 on until the disk is unallocated.

Clean Install Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

You will lose everything doing a clean install though, so be sure to backup anything that you do not want to lose to a different location.

Brink, thanks. The tutorials refer to installing from a USB. Presumably the same procedures apply to installing from a DVD. Is that so?

If you have a UEFI installation, you would want to boot from a USB instead. Plus, a USB would be faster.

Brink, how do I temporarily disconnect all non OS hard drives, and then reconnect them after the Win 10 installation has finished?

Disk 0 has a 450 MB recovery partition, a 100 MB EFI system partition, the C drive partition, and lastly an 854 MB recovery partition. Am I correct in thinking I should only format the C drive partition?

Let's see a screenshot of your Disk Management first to be safe.

Normally, your would delete all partitions on Disk 0 that your installing Windows on until Disk 0 shows as "unallocated", then select this unallocated disk to install to.

If you have any other hard drives (disks) connected, then you could just temporarily disconnect their data or power cable until finished installing Windows 10 to Disk 0.

Brink, the screenshot is attached. (I could not get my Screenshot Captor program to capture the rest of the drives in the bottom pane, i.e. drive H, my DVD drive, my USB drive, or my NAS drive).

I cannot disconnect all the non OS drives-if I open my tower case I have no idea what to disconnect.

You would disconnect the smaller red date cable connector (left) like below from only the internal non OS hard drives. No need for the CD/DVD or NAS. Be sure to power off the computer before disconnecting them.

After you do so, boot to Windows to make sure that you only have the OS hard drive left, and didn't disconnect the OS drive by mistake.

Brink, thanks. Just to be absolutely sure, do you mean the red cable on the left in your picture or the middle one. Also, regarding my post #49, should I format the partitions to the left and right of the C drive, or just the C drive partition?

Correct, only the flat red cable on the left with the smaller connector. This is the data cable.

You would want to delete all partitions on Disk 0. This would include "C" and all partitions to the left and right of it.

Brink, when I tried to install Build 17063 from my USB pen drive, having deleted all partitions on disk 0 and having booted from the pen drive, I chose to install to the unallocated space but was told that the Build could not be installed there because the disk was an MBR disk and needed to be a GPT disk. I converted the disk to GPT, and tried again, but then Windows told me the disk needed to be an MBR disk!!

    What can I do now?

Brink, thanks but regarding item 6 of the tutorial ( You can now initialize the disk, convert the disk to MBR or GPT, and create a New Simple Volume on the disk) how do I do that?

You would type this below in the same command prompt at step 6. Afterwards, you should see the unallocated disk 0 to clean install on.

    create partition primary
