  2. So sorry Chkdsk /r did not clear the problem. After I ran it, the message did not reappear. Have you run Chkdsk from the admin prompt without parameters? This will allow it to run online. Does it give any error messages? When I ran Chkdsk online, there was a problem with the bit map. That was corrected by running Chkdsk /r. Perhaps someone else on the forum has a solution.

    I did run this...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>Chkdsk /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Cheers!

I think you misunderstood me. I meant run Chkdsk this way without the /r :

    C:\Windows\system32\chkdsk

It will run online and should tell you what the problem is. Let me know what happens.

The problem seems to be that the only way to cure this is for Chkdsk to successfully run to completion on C:, but the catch is that the only way to do this is at boot up - which is where it always fails to run.

I mentioned earlier the similar problem that the early builds of Creators Update suffered. While investigating I did once get Chkdsk to run correctly at boot up. That was when I booted to Safe Mode, it's worth a try.

I have found a solution on an HP forum that has worked...

Open the register (regedit.exe) and change the value of "AutoChkSkipSystemPartition" from 0 to 1, you can find this key in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\

This now solves my issue. Hopefully others who encounter this issue can find some use with this solution.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

    Cheers!

That cures the symptoms - it doesn't cure the underlying problem. Try now scheduling a Chkdisk at boot using CHKDSK /F C: and see if it runs successfully. I suspect it won't.

I have that set to 0 but don't have the problem you appear to have.

  12. Hey Radar, thank you! Your HP fix is also the solution to a very annoying issue I've had for a while. Win10 doesn't like sharing, and after whatever update, it decided that it was gonna screw with my bootloader by "fixing" the partition (which is perfectly fine BTW). Although this has happened before, ever since this last update - checkdisk has become excessively aggressive. Microsoft has driven so many nails in it's coffin, that once I'm finished with my current Steam purchase, C: is becoming one large swap partition, just cause I can.
    Anyway- thanks for the solution.
