Windows 10: Windows 10 does not boot after forced shutdown

Hi,

My HP Pavilion G6 laptop is no more booting into Windows 10 after I did a forced shutdown 3 days back when the system was hung. I am not sure if some Windows 10 update was running in the background when I forced a shutdown.

Till now I have tried the following;
- Used F2 to get into system diagnostics and run 'memory test' and 'hard disk test'. Both have passed.
- Got into BIOS using F10 and checked all BIOS settings and boot options in BIOS are correct.
- Tried to boot from Windows 10 installation disk to run recovery, however it never boots from the DVD. It gives the error shown in the attachment. (some how I am not able to upload any attachments)
- Used Esc to get into the systems recovery option. The Windows 10 logo comes up with the waiting circle going round and round showing its doing something. However, even after 12 hrs I did not find any change and the system is stuck in the same same Windows logo screen.
- I have done a long power-down as suggested in one of the posts in this forum (holding down power button for more than 30 secs) and then trying to boot. This too did not help.

Every time it come back into the same Windows 10 logo screen and stays in that state for eternity.

Any help in getting the system to boot from DVD/re-installation of Windows 10 will of great help.

windows 10 black screen

After upgrading from windows 8.1 to windows 10. Sometimes a black screen would show forever while booting up and I'd have to force shutdown.

It will boot up ok after pressing the power button.

Any help would be appreciated.

After installed windows 10 when i shutdown my laptop it does not shutdown automatic. power button light does not off and i use force shutdown. i also fully updated my laptop with all drivers. even then this
problem can't solved. so give me complete solution for this problem.

Can you post a share link using one drive or drop box?

For this step the power cord and battery both need to be removed. Were they done?

1) Create a bootable windows 10 iso:
Download Windows 10
2) Check each a USB2 and a USB3 port for the next step
3) Insert the flash drive into a USB port > power on and repetitively click the F9 key so that it displays boot device options
4) Select external USB hard drive
5) The blue windows icon with a black background may be displayed for 5 -10 minutes without any rotating dots
6) Select language, time, currency, and keyboard
7) Click next
8) If your files are backed up then click install to delete partitions, format, make an unallocated drive, and reinstall a fresh copy of windows 10 version 1703.
9) If your files are not backed up then in the left lower corner click repair your computer
10) Click troubleshoot
11) Click system restore to see if there are any available restore points
12) If there is a valid restore point that predates the problems then attempt a system restore
13) If system restore has no available restore points or fails proceed to startup repair
14) If startup repair fails proceed to command prompt.
etc.

Did you see UEFI firmware recovery in the advanced troubleshooting options?
Had you made a backup image of the drive?
Were your only options with power on F2 just memory and drive? Or were there other options to check CPU, GPU, etc.?
Let us know your progress with the above steps.

If you cannot boot to a Windows 10 iso then you can try booting to:
(For all of these again try each USB2 and USB3)

Thanks for your response. I have updated the details on 'systems specs'. Some details like the Windows 10 build number I cannot update now since my laptop is not booting.

No, I have not seen this option in troubleshooting options. However, in boot options in asked if I want to boot from UEFI boot.

No, I do not have a recent backup of the hard disk. My hard disk is partitioned though and no data is present in C drive. I hope only C drive will be wiped during re-installation of Windows 10 or should I try making a backup after trying to boot from a Ubuntu live DVD?

Initially, the boot options included cd/dvd, hard drive, network, etc. However, after a few failed trials to boot from dvd, the cd/dvd option is also not showing now! I need to check which other options it had shown.

No, the power cord and battery were not removed. I will try that in evening today.

On getting this message I had opened the laptop, disconnected and reconnected the hard disk. After this the hard disk test had passed.

 

Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes.

This may take many hours so plan to run it overnight.

HP has not provided any official driver support for Windows 10 installation on HP Pavilion G6 2005AX series laptops.

It is a pre August 2013 model and comes under un-tested models with Windows 10.

Although drive support is not there, I have been running Windows 10 smoothly on this laptop since the launch of Windows 10 and have never faced any issues.

Yesterday I tried the log power down after disconnecting battery and power supply. After when I tried to boot into the system recovery it showed me a screen stating that there is a hard disk failure. (I have got a screenshot which is currently not handy, will be uploading later). Subsequently I ran UEFI based Memory test and Hard disk tests... Both Failed! Surprising both these tests had passed a day earlier.

Next I tried booting from a Ubuntu live DVD. It threw some errors but it was able to boot from the live DVD.
I am not able to understand what might be the issue... hard disk failure, memory failure or just some system partition corruption by some malware?

 

The reason for booting from non-windows is to check the hardware.
Being able to boot using Ubuntu supports the integrity of the hardware and problems with the windows bootable partition.
Running Memtest86+ version 5.01 will be useful in checking the integrity of the RAM / DIMM / Motherboard.

Please make sure that it is run for at least 8 passes.
The more the passes the better as it sometimes has taken passes in the 20's to find malfunctioning RAM.
Running the Memtest86+ version 5.01 for fewer than 8 passes has a significant number of false negatives.
A false negative is a pass test result when there is malfunctioning RAM.
Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing is not done by time but by passes.
If you estimate the time it takes approximately 1 -2 hours / GB of RAM.
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
If there are multiple RAM modules you will then remove all modules except for 1 RAM module and test each module for 8 passes in the same DIM to see which RAM module is malfunctioning.
If the RAM modules fail when tested simultaneously and pass when tested 1 at a time you will then need to test the DIMM / Motherboard. This is done by moving the RAM module to another DIMM and testing for 8 or more passes.

 

Think you should try to repair boot sectors with Macrium. If you have spare computer, install Macrium free on it, make USB bootable stick, boot into it and select restore tab and fix windows boot problems.

 

I was some not able to create a bootable usb with Memtest86+. Somehow it did not list the usb stick that was connected to the PC i was using. So i resorted to running so tests using the ubuntu live dvd. I ran "Disk Utility" there to get the status of hard disk. Here is the screenshot after running test.

I am trying to run some RAM tests to check the RAM.

 

I ran boot time RAM test that passed.

I created a boot disk with memtest86+, but even after selecting it, it never starts any tests. Its stuck in this screen. See screenshot.

If you have fast boot or ultra fast boot enabled in your UEFI firmware settings, then you will need to temporarily disable fast boot or ultra fast boot to be able to boot from a USB.

1. Try another USB stick
2. Try all USB ports (2.0 and 3.0)
3. Maybe when using UEFI Bios u have temporarly switch to Legacy in BIOS settings
4. Turn off temporarily fast boot, secure boot, CSM if enabled

This was the method that was recently used in another computer (Asus) the had boot issues:


ASUS G551JW-----Press F2 to bios menu (ESC to boot menu)
1. I disabled the fast boot
2. I diasbled the secure boot control to get into CSM
3. I enabled the CSM and F10 to save and exit
4. Press F2 and in the boot menu we will find 4 options:
a) 2 for UEFI: boot manager, UEFI Flash disk
b) 2 for bios: boot manager, flash disk
5. Select the bios flash disk which will be the last option(fourth) and set it as primary boot device.
6. Press F10 to save and exit and wait for the memtest86+ to run.

I was finally able to run Memtest86+. The tool was part of a ubuntu 16.04 live dvd it had got. After 8 passes i received a single error message. It was received during the 1st pass itself. Screenshot below.

I guess the RAM is fine. Issue is with the hard drive.... any inputs on how to take backup from the failing drive?
