Windows 10: Windows 10 Pro updates

Win 10 has worked perfectly until a few days ago, when I got this message:
There were some problems installing updates, but we’ll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80073b01). This message persist.
I have run the update trouble shooter, scanned for malware and virus's, cleaned all junk, all to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Upgrade from Win7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro.

Updated 4 Dell machines from Win7 Pro to Windows 10 and one from Win. 8.1 Pro to Win 10. All 5 only updated to windows 10 Home instead of Pro. Should they not have been automatically updated to Windows 10 Pro? If so, what's the fix.

my tablet running windows 8.1 pro, it will be updated to windows 10 pro. but when i push update, i got failed update windows 10 home. why it mention windows 10 home, not windows 10 pro?

Can you identify which updates have failed? One way to do this is to look in the Advanced options on Windows Update and then look in view your update history.

 

Which Win 10 version do you have ?
Version 10240 or 10586 ?

 

I have the exact same issue with Win 10 Pro 1511 10586.0
As soon as the updates run ( the ones that were installed on or about the 6 January and then again on or about the 13th and then again very recently ( taking my PC to version. 10586.71)
The following are a list of the issues that appear, not always all of them.

(1) the by now infamous loss of the Start menu
(2) The equally infamous loss of access the MS Edge
(3) The loss of apps such as calculator, Notifications
(4) Slow PC response.
(5) Then the final blow is when IE 11 stops working also.

The last time this happened after the updates on 13th January 2016, I could no longer access my MS account, or the backup and restore pages on settings. It is what led me to do a complete re-install after using the in-built Administrator account to delete all traces of the old profiles, absolutely everything short of a HDD reformat.

I have never seen any error messages though. I have seen updates fail to install but after a reboot they do install.
When I run the SFC and DISM commands recommended no faults show up.
The only way is to reset the PC, or go back to a previously stored restore point or the best of all is a complete new install from a ISO USB stick.

 

Do a system restore. Pick a date more than " a few days ago " as your restore point.

Thank you philc43 for your answer. There are no updates that have failed. I have run sfc, and it finds files that needed repair, but failed to repair them all. I am dreading a reset, as I would have to reinstall all of my software, but I am running out of choices. Graeme

 

Your welcome! Don't be too disheartened. There are some known problems with sfc at the moment with one file being reported as failing to repair. This can happen if you have an NVidia graphics card. If you wanted me to check the CBS log file for you from the sfc scan I am happy to do that if you attach it to your post.

 

I asked you to run a system restore in Post #5, but you do not respond.

I'll answer this last issue. It's up to you to decide if you want to try it or not....................

Right click at Start button > click Command Prompt (Admin) > at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this.......

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

> press Enter.
Again it will take some time.
When finished, it will give you a report.

If it reports operation successful, run the sfc /scannow again.

 

Thank you davidhk. sorry for the delay in answering. I did as you suggested, and the scans completed successfully. However the problem remains. I will now do the system restore again, as the first time, it did not complete successfully. Will turn off AV, and try again.
