Windows 10: Windows 10 S

I downloaded an ISO of what i thought was 16299.15 well sure enough it was but it was windows 10 S
my laptop cant boot to usb or DVD now I am screwed i tried recovery rebooting to a cmd prompt and then running setup by i get the incompatible msg b/c u cant run exe within windows 10 S.

the only way to around this is to upgrade windows 10 pro but i don't have a genuine 10 pro key
anyone know away around this??

OK, so i figured it out myself

Found the logfile in "C:\Windows\Minidump".

You need the Windows Development Kit to open it and a bit of googling to understand it.

Found out that a Daemon driver caused an error. Removed Daemon but this didn't solve it. (ps: Daemon itself worked normally).

I let hibernate my computer again and found another error with sptd2.sys: SCSI Pass Through Direct layer

More google and ended up on the duplexsecure site. Downloaded the W10 version and voila: problem fixed.

For the Windows support team: It would be really helpfull if you could pass problems to a more skilled helpdesk who can do more than proposing the standard solutions in case those won't work.

Windows 10 Unexpected shutdown on start up

OK, so I also found out that this occurs when sleepmode (for me after 3 hours) changes into hibernate mode.

Seems like the going into hibernate and/or starting up from HIbernate results in a shutdown. In safeboot it works perfectly.

Anyone any idea how I can figure out where it goes wrong. Is there a way to log this (I couldn't find it in bootlog)

 

Your windows install has zero to do with booting from another device. That is done in the bios. You would need to download the proper copy from Download Windows 10 Disc Image (ISO File) Windows 10 S is a Security edition for those who wish to limit what their users do and to lock down the PC. It runs only a minimum set of tools available.

 

Go to Settings > Update & security > Activation. Then click Change Product Key, then enter this key. VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T It will upgrade to Pro. That is the generic Pro key you get with a Digital license . It will only activate if that device already has a Digital license for Pro.

As mentioned, Edition installed has nothing to do with Booting to your BIOS. It more than likely because Windows Fast Startup is enabled. If your PC is UEFI try this, Boot to UEFI Firmware Settings from inside Windows 10

Or turn Fast Startup off, Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 and see if you can boot from your install media.

You have posted this same exact problem on different threads and we all want to know what OS you were running before. If it was a legitimate copy of Windows 10 home, then just download and install that. If you were running a pirated copy of Windows 10 home then nobody here will help you fix this issue.

There really is no issue except you downloading whatever ISO you have a license for and installing it.

 

Missed the part about not having a 10 Pro key earlier. *Redface The 10 Home Generic key is I believe YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7. I don't think this will work in this instance. I don't think you can go from 10 S to 10 Home. 10 S is a locked down version of 10 Pro.

 

Like I have indicated to the OP in this thread and else where, he simply needs to download a standard ISO using the Media Creation Tool and do a clean install. In the other thread where he has has been expressing his dissatisfaction with all things Windows 10 related, he says that he understands the advice that is being given.

I hope that he follows the advice. No word yet if the OP has a legitimate license or not.

If it had worked, a change key would have saved having to reinstall. I gave 10 S a try, when I was done I just used change product key to upgrade to Pro. No having to reinstall, nothing lost in the process. It just unlocks the Pro features. A lot easier than starting all over from scratch.

 

The generic keys have not worked for me with the install I tried on one unit. I had to go get my old key from my dad for Windows 7 that was on one of the computers that we had to get a license for. It now has a Core 2 Quad Core in it.

The Windows 10 S is a great install if you need to keep the kids locked down or doing a setup for say a Boy's and Girl's club. The so called reviewers hate 10 s, like they did with 7 Startup. They are meant for what they are supposed to be used for, not for the common user. From the sounds of it, looks like 10 S is supposed to take the place of home, which should just go away all together and use Pro, so that Deployment schedules can be set within your Live profile as Symantec has done with their Cloud Security package. We could roll out a profile quicker than dealing with having to go and sit down at each machine in a group.

 

Alpha, this does talk about how 10 S can replace Pro. I personally would love to see someone crank out a Asm version of a desktop that is made to put power back in the hands when using Raspberry Pi.

Mine activated right away without having to enter any key. My best guess is it activated with the Pro Digital License that PC already had. 10 S has its own set of keys different from Home or Pro. I have keys for it via MSDN. Doing some digging around with my install I found it had its own generic key. That didn't match the Home or Pro ones. Once I was done playing around I just entered the Pro generic key and it upgraded to Pro and stayed activated. The generic keys will let you install, they just won't activate if the PC doesn't already have a DL. My PC's all have multiple DL's for just about every Edition of Windows 10. Due to all my test installs etc.

 

OP is creating confusion by multi posting. I think mods (e.g. @Brink) should lock this down. We have heard nothing back from OP so I see no point in us all carrying on this discussion.

 

I've been wanting 10 Mobile ported to the PI for a long time now, not going to happen though.

Last time I checked Windows 10 on ARM won't run on the ARM SOC in the Pi. You need Snapdragon or something. It will be interesting to see what the rumored Pi 4 comes with, SOC wise. And 10 IoT is useless to me, I just don't have the coding skills to make use of it. I bookmarked that link, thanks, will have a look see latter on today. To early in the day for that now.
