Windows 10: Windows 10 stuck in Safe mode, Can't login with my correct password

So, I recently started having problems with the latest Nvidia graphics drivers, so i went to downgrade them until they sort out the issues, and upon restart of my PC I am in safe mode. It asks for a password, but I usually login with the 4 digit PIN.

So, I go reset my password, since I don't remember it and the new password doesn't work. It won't accept the PIN, and it doesn't accept any of my "usual" passwords. So I have no idea what to do. Also, I don't have a Windows 10 disk because I upgraded from Windows 7. Everything in safe mode requires a password, which isn't working, so I am just stuck there at the login screen. How can I get out of safe mode or fix this somehow? Any help would be much appreciated.

*Edit Also, my computer says its not connected to the internet, and no network can be found, yet every other computer in the house works. I have also tried, Shift + restart to try and launch safe mode with networking but that also said no networks could be found.

So, yeah I'm stumped on this one.

Safe mode login

Hello. I updated to windows 10 but the taskbar wasn't working well.

So, i decided to login with safe mode with networking.

Now, I'm stucked at safe mode window login because I don't remember the password.

I was using pin to login to windows and I can't find the password.

Is it a way to return to normal mode?

Or any other way to solve this problem?

Hi Novyx and welcome to Tenforums.


If you have System Restore turned on, you could try restoring to a point in time before this happened. (See Option #1: Do a System Restore at boot)

If no restore points exist, you could turn on the hidden administrator account, and remove the password from your user account that way. Since you can't get into your account, you'd need to accomplish this using Option #4 in the tutorial.

I don't have any restore points to use, and also I am unable to access a command prompt because I need to login to use it. Trying to do anything through using Shift + restart other than startup options requires a password. It's so frustrating that I need a password for everything on the start up screen, but it won't accept the password I know is correct. I reset it through Microsoft's website, and I'm able to login on there. But it will not accept any password I put in.

You can do this at boot following option #4.

 

I have no way to boot Windows 10 installation though. I upgraded from Windows 7, and I don't have a disc for Windows 10.

I was unaware until a little bit ago, but I see that now. I'm actually in the process of making one now. So hopefully this will help.

 

Here's a work around that did it for me. Remove hdd and mount in another machine (mine win 7) locate utilman.exe in that disc Windows\system32, change ownership and allow full control for your local user then rename it to somat else temporarily. Locate cmd.exe in same folder and change ownership and allow full control as well. Rename it to utilman.exe then Power down and replace hdd then boot up. At the login prompt click on the middle lower right icon to get command prompt up. Type in " bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot" and hit return. You should get command successful. Then reboot and you should be able to enter your pin as normal. Once in goto the files u changed and rename them back again and you're done. Hope this helps anyone else out there .

 

I am going to try this suggestion. NOTHING else works. I have a boot disk and I can get networking with my safe mode but that's about it. If I can access my files from the removed HD I will transfer them and use my other machine. Never again going in safe mode. Was trying to remove Reimage malware...jeez!

I have the exact same problem to this disgraceful windows problem that does not allow me to exit safe mode.

I have tried option four as it was suggested but it says that the SAM file is being used by another application!!

I also made a restore point in case I had any trouble on safe mode, but safe mode doesn't allow me to use it because there is antivirus running!!!! How on earth can I shutdown my antivirus if I can't pass the safe mode where my password is not recognized??

What a nightmare. Please help with this Microsoft atrocity that locks me out of my computer.

 

Hey I also had the problem.i just pressed the power button and held on till the laptop turned off and I pressed it again to turn it on and .......it went back to the normal mode.I think that you might have solved the issue by now but for everyone else who might be having the same thing try this.....it helped me.
