Windows 10 upgrade on windows 8 laptop NOT WORKING

So I'm trying to update my asus laptop (currently running windows 8, I'm not 100% sure if its 8 or 8.1, but I'm pretty its just 8). But sometimes it freezes at the "Welcome to windows 10" screen, where it shows my name and a Next button. Other times I can get past that but It freezes and crashes when "Checking for updates" I've tried disconnecting from the internet, which It got to "Finallizing settings" but then gave me the same crash error.

    Crash screen:

  2. I have a windows 7 (Home Premium), is it possible to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro directly?

    * Original Title: Windows 10 Upgrade

I have a windows 7 (Home Premium) laptop (it came installed with the laptop). When windows 8 was released, I used the initial offer to buy the upgrade key to windows 8 pro. But I never used the upgrade and I am still running windows
    7. Now, is it possible to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro directly or would I have to install Windows 8 Pro and then upgrade to Windows 10.

Windows 10 upgrade on windows 8 laptop NOT WORKING

    Hi,
    1. If you have Win 8 rather than 8.1, an upgrade to Win 10 is not supported, as far as I know.
    E.g.
Windows 10 is a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users | PCWorld
Microsoft operating system chief Terry Myerson announced that current users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the new operating system for free as long as they do so within one year of Windows 10's July 29 launch
    - that's 2015.

    2. Assuming you have Win 8.1, according to published information you should not be able to upgrade and activate Win 10 without a retail license for Win 10.
(However some report upgrades are still accepted).

    3. You refer to updating your PC:
    - can you confirm you mean you're trying to upgrade to Win 10 - since you're posting this on tenforums?

    4. Assuming you are trying to upgrade to Win 10, how are you trying to do that?
    - are you using Windows update?
    - or are you doing that manually, having downloaded Win 10?

From the point of view of the best outcome, a clean install is preferable. If you don't have too much installed and have your data backed up (as you should!) that would be a better way forward.

Before upgrading we strongly recommend you create a disk image of your existing system. Things can go badly wrong, and sometimes people lose data or end up with an unbootable PC.

Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for images will do that.

Using disk imaging routinely is someting we strongly and repeatedly recommend so you can recover from an unbootable PC, ransomware, a failed disk- even user error fairly quickly and without technical help.

I'm upgrading from a Microsoft updater.

But if it is not supported then how can I get back to my desktop? Because everytime I boot up now it goes to the Welcome to windows 10 screen

I went to a microsoft url, downloaded the updater, It downloaded and installed, but not It wont let me in. It is just sending me to a blue screen saying "Welcome to windows 10" it shows me new features and all, I click next, and it says checking for updates, after a little it freezes and crashed

Oh, do you mean you have tried to update to Win 10, and your PC no longer boots to Win 8, and is failing to boot up properly?

Did it ever complete the upgrade? I can't make out where you are in the process, I'm afraid. It sounds like it's failing on one of the restarts during the upgrade process.

Actually this is a BSOD thread, so hopefully will be moved to the BSOD section of the forum.

So let me explain the process I went through.

    1. I got a updater from the ACTUAL microsoft website

    2. I opened the updater, everything went smooth, it downloaded and installed

    3. I restarted my laptop and it sent me to a Blue screen saying "Welcome to Windows 10" where it shows my name and a "Next" button

    4. I click next, it shows me a few new settings, and cortana setup

    5. After all of that it sends me to a new screen where there is a "Checking updates" After sitting on this page for a few minuets the loading bubbles freeze (I can still move my mouse) and then says my pc ran into a error blah blah blah (The error in the picture above)

    6. It restarts and send me back to the "Welcome to windows 10" screen

So it basically is a big loop, and I cant get back to my old desktop

P.S. I've done the windows 10 upgrade on my PC and it all went smoothly

Windows 10 upgrade on windows 8 laptop NOT WORKING

Just one thought- do you see a prompt which will allow you to choose NOT to check for updates?

    - do you mean the MS media creation tool?
    Download Windows 10

I honestly cannot remember, it was late at night, but Im pretty sure I got it from here:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/acce...ndows10upgrade

If I disconnect from the internet (Turn wifi off) then it goes to finalize settings but it does the same thing, freeze then crash, and show the same error

As part of the Windows installation process there is a prompt which allows you to choose whether or not to check for updates during the installation.

At present you say the incomplete installation fails in trying to check for updates.

If, when you restart, do you see a prompt asking you if you wish to check for updates?
If you do, you can skip that check. There's an outside possibility your installation may proceed further.

Do you see what I mean?

Ok, I'll assume you don't see that prompt.

So, the error message relates to storport.sys. That's the only clue- people encountering this refer to doing a factory reset, then upgrading from what I've quickly read.

I suspect your only option will be to recover what data you can (if not already backed up) and clean install.

You might have the option to restore your previous OS- I don't know- it depends how far the installation has progressed etc.

Try creating a Win 10 boot disk, boot your PC from that, select Repair your computer, and see if you see an option to 'Go back to the previous build'

Windows 10 upgrade on windows 8 laptop NOT WORKING

I just recently got it working again (friend got a virus on it), so there isn't much data on it really, but how can I reset if I cant get to my desktop or anything?

    I've got a windows 8 reset disc

The installation is at the very end. It just wont go through, there are no options to revert to old os or anything

No no no - if considering reverting to Win 8- if it's possible with this failed installation, then as per my previous post

    1. Boot your PC from Win 10 bootable medium
    2. Click repair your computer.
    3. Navigate through the options as per the ttuorial I quoted for you.

Forget your Win 8 reset disk.

Your problem is going to be licensing Win 10 in trying to recover from a failed install. See below.
    =========================================
Ok, if there's not much on it, then I strongly recommend you do a clean install.

(I amended my previous post to give you a possible - but not certain- option to recover your old Win 8 build).

Here's how to do a clean install:
Download Windows 10 ISO File Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10 Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials
    (or use a DVD)

Now, if you have a retail license for Win 8, then - during the original free upgrade period- you could do this easily:
Clean Install Windows 10 Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

Now, however, officially that's not possible, although you can try it.

If, however, your license came with your PC - an OEM one- then you would have had to upgrade - or buy a retail license for win 10.
