No, she doesn't at all. I think she was afraid to try anything.
I was worried if her Kaspersky wasn't the problem, then she might be infected by something she D/L'ed to fix her 'puter.

Now that she say's she has help coming, I dread its not the G. Squad !

    Hello again.

The help I got was simply to remove Kaspersky for windows 7 & install the new version for windows 10. No geek squad.
Actually, my guy said you guys are the best for help with windows 10 glitches.

I am using my laptop, but it's continually freezing up, so I'm still having issues with windows 10.

The task manager now comes up with 2 apps running, google chrome & task manager, & 31 background processes. I would never dream of trying to change anything on my own, because I don't know what I'm doing. *Smile

Art, you mentioned an issue with "one drive". If you have the patience, I'm willing to try & follow your lead. I don't expect immediate assistance, especially on a long weekend, so I'll check back a few times each day.

    I appreciate the help.

  3. Hi Louise, thanks for the update and returning back here.

Your original post said you could not use the start button. Are you able to use it now ?

Everyone here have the patience of a saint.

When you try to follow instruction's take your time and do them slowly.

If your unsure about anything, stop and come back and tell us.

Windows 10 won't let me open the start button, or anything else.

    Yes, thank you.

The start button has been working, in between freeze ups, since the forced shut down on page 2.

I thought it best to continue the conversation started here. I've browsed the threads looking for my issues, & hopefully, simple instructions, without any luck. Admittedly, I didn't understand a lot of what I saw. *Smile

My issue; once I could open the start button, & have since fixed the firewall/anti-virus; is the constant freezing up. ArtShapiro said that he had experienced the same issues I had & turned off "one drive", so I was hoping he could walk me through it.

Or, if you have the time to post really simple instructions, that would be cool. *Smile

I won't be on my computer much for the next week, so I'm in no hurry. Alternatively, I'll only be available sporadically, so will check in when I can.

    I must go for now.
    Thanks again till next time.

  6. The problem for me was my antivirus (Avast). Once I uninstalled it, I was ok.

Hello Louise--If you don't mind me jumpin' in here. First of all, I'll bet I'm older than you are. I'm 84--or as the kids would say, "Eighty four and a half going on eighty five." These young wiper-snappers have helped me out a lot here on any computer issue. I've been a member for quite awhile and they have always treated me very well. Since Windows 10 has come out they no doubt have been busier than skunk in a chicken coop. But be patient with them. Some of them may still be wet behind the ears but they are still a good bunch.*Smile

Windows 10 won't let me open the start button, or anything else.

I had the same issue. I was able to open msconfig from the Run Menu (Windows key + R) and noticed it was set to Selective Startup. I changed it to Normal, rebooted, and everything worked.

  9. Louise, this would only be relevant if - once you had clicked that button to see all the tasks in Task Manager - a task called either OneDriveSetup or OneDrive Setup (I don't remember which) was using a big percentage of the processor. Can you eyeball that? If so, just click on that task name and hit the Delete key. That will terminate the task (it might ask your permission - if so allow it.)

If that OneDrive Setup task isn't using more than 50% of the CPU, then we're looking at some other issue.

  10. Siobhan, thank you for the suggestion. I had the same issue with the Start Menu not opening and when I went into msconfig it was set for selective startup. Not sure how that happened but I set for normal start up and the Start Menu returned to normal after reboot. So thanks for the suggestion! Saved me a lot of time.

I NEVER sign up for forum accounts for one off uses (only for long term interest) but I had to join this, just to thankyou!
so many posts over the internet regarding this and similar issues and none mentioned your simple answer. If you dont mind
me asking, how you came to this conclusion?

    Cheers

Kind of an old thread; found the thread when my Win10 had the same issue. The discussion about the OneDrive made me think as I had recently upgraded for the free 15gb + 15gb photo roll. I was able through this discussion to: Ctrl+Alt+Del to Task Manager, and then "More Details." I disabled OneDrive from the Startup tab, and then manually rebooted. Problem solved.

    Hope this helps others. Gratzie!

  13. Windows 10 won't let me open the start button, or anything else.

Siobhan, many thanks! Your suggestion worked first time with my Start Menu problem. I also had problems with firewall and anti-virus errors prior to this, but they were resolved by phoning my anti-virus provider (ESET) who did a remote session to uninstall and reinstall. I wonder what curve ball Windows 10 will throw up next?! Glad to have found such a useful forum full of helpful users. Thank you all...
