Windows 10: Windows Photo Viewer isn't an option, cannot set as default

Just bought a brand new HP notebook with windows 10. I cannot set windows photo viewer as default. I go to open with, it is not an option. I go to control panel/default programs/set default programs/. When I click "set as default" nothing happens. This is so frustrating! Why isn't it an option!?

I forgot about the windows photo viewer, but it still won't work.

I assinged it as "default viewer" in "set defaults by app"

But there's only two file types that are visible to assign.

So the Photos app will still open all the images....

And It isn't there as an option in Settings, to set as default viewer.

And when I right click an image, the Microsoft photo viewer isn't visible. only some others, and "look for an app in store"

So what to do?

When I first upgraded to windows 10, Windows Photo Viewer was the default program to open most pictures, I then set the default program for all pictures to be the "Photos" app and I kept this setting for a couple of days, Now I want to set Windows Photo
Viewer as the default program again but I can't find the option anywhere.

For example searching for "photo", "photo viewer" or "windows photo viewer" in the search option in the taskbar brings no results whatsoever, Alternatively, using the context menu on a random picture and selecting "open with / Choose another app / more apps"
brings a bunch of programs to choose from but windows photo gallery isn't among them. I've also tried "Control panel / programs / default programs / set default programs" and Windows photo viewer appears as an option in which I select "set this program as
default" but even after that my computer keeps using the "Photos" app to open pictures etc.

I would appreciate any help in getting back Windows Photo Viewer as the default program for opening pictures,

I followed your "Here is how to get it back..." procedure, but it won't show up in the apps listing that I get by clicking the Windows icon. It shows up in the "default apps" list, but how do I access Windows Photo Viewer

from the desktop? Or should I say, How do I get it onto the desktop?

(Wow, that's what I get for copying something from a headline, eh?)

I can't tell you how frustrating "Photos" is. It hides nearly everything, even the pictures that comprise my screen saver slide show. The pictures come up on the slide show, but I have no access in order to edit them.
