Windows system icons in the notification area have stopped working

Clicking the speaker icon in the notification area should bring up a volume slider. Likewise, clicking the clock area should bring up the clock setting window. And clicking the network icon should bring up a network info window. That's what happens on my laptop and used to happen on my desktop. Both are running the same (latest) versions of Windows 10 (v. 1909 Build 18363.693). However on the desktop all I get is a brief flash of an hourglass and nothing more. Hovering the mouse over the icons shows the normal "tip" displays. Clicking third-party software icons works correctly. I've tried Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > "Turn system icons on or off" and turned the icons off, then on again. This didn't help. Any ideas as to why this Windows service has stopped functioning on my desktop?

    :)

  2. Notification area (system tray) icons missing, Reset did not work

    Hi Kevin,

With regard to your query about the system tray, we suggest that you follow the steps below and see if it helps.

    • Right-click on an empty space in your desktop taskbar and select Properties.
    • In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window, find the selection labeled
Notification Area and click on Customize.
    • Click on Turn system icons on or off.
    • If you'd like to always show all icons, turn the slider window to On.
    • Reboot the PC for the changes to take effect.

    Let us know the result.

    Startup and Notification area

R]I ran this batch file, but it did not help (which I understand, because Task Manager > Processes does NOT show WinDates).

I am back to the conclusion that Win 10 can run WinDates manually, but not automatically at startup (via link). If I double-click on the link C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\WinDates.lnk, WinDates opens fine.

My next step will be to run a scan of system files to see if something is corrupt. However, any other suggestions are welcome.

    GPU-Z Program Icon Submission

Suggestion to have an option to change Notification Area icon this way too.
Suggestion to finally have proper separate Options window like most (all?) Windows programs do.
