    Windows update missing

I'm trying to stop Win10 from installing updates automatically and I'm following the group policy method (go to run and type in "mmc" -> add/remove snap in -> group policy object -> etc. etc.) and I want to set it to "Allow admin to adjust settings."

This, according to the instructions allows you to adjust the updates policy from Control Panel->System and Security->Windows Update.

Trouble is, I don't have Windows Update in System and Security and I can't find any other place where I can adjust the update policy.

I know its possible to in "mmc" set it to notify you of updates, but I'd prefer to do it this way if possible.

    :)

I haven't been able to install Windows 10 due to the following error: C1900101-20017. Any idea what this is and does it mean I'm out of luck?

  3. Cortana Missing

It didn’t help. As I told you in the previous mail there is no microphone sign and no Cortana circle on the search bar. I was thinking to uninstall updates and reinstall them. Before the factory reset Cortana was there and was working . Please suggest
    something else.

Try running the troubleshooter. Found in Control Panel > System & Security > Troubleshooting. Select All items on the left and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

I went to Control Panel > System & Security > Troubleshooting, but I don't know what you mean by selecting all the items on the left. There wasn't anything on the left to select, but I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it found 2 issues and fixed them, but there still is no Windows Update in Control Panel > System & Security.

I meant "view all items" but you found it so that's good. The windows update section no longer appears in Control panel. It can only be found in the new Settings window under Update and Security.

I've set my update configuration in mmc to Allow admin to adjust settings, however I don't see any option under settings->updates and security to tell windows to notify me of updates rather than downloading them automatically.

    I have Pro.

The thing is, I followed this

How to Change Windows Update Settings When Managed or Disabled by System Administrator? - AskVG

I followed method 1 from there (group policy), but the problem is that if you look at the first screenshot in that link, it shows the windows update->change settings menu, but I don't have "change settings" in windows update.

I have "advanced options" but that doesn't look anything like his "change settings."

That's the problem. I've set the group policy to option 5, but there's no "change settings" menu or anything else that would let me adjust update options.

Meanwhile, Windows is downloading updates for parts of Office 2016 like Outlook and Powerpoint that I haven't even installed. All I got is Word.

    EDIT:

Now I tried setting it to option 2 in group policy (notify me of updates) and when I go to windows update it still says "available updates will be downloaded and installed automatically"

So it appears that the problem is that these changes I'm making aren't even taking.

If you look just above that screenshot it says...
A lot of Settings pages have changed since the Technical Previews and original RTM build 10240, particularly the Windows Update ones. They were moved from the Control Panel (which is what's shown in that screenshot) into the Settings app. As I recall, that Control Panel page was already missing by the time 10240 was released to the public.

    Ahh, I see. Thanks!

Nevertheless, I still can't find any button/menu to adjust updates. Tho, again, that appears to be because when I change things in the group policy thing it doesn't take. Whether I put the notify me of updates option or allow local admin to adjust it doesn't take, it still says "updates will be installed automatically."

And I've tried clicking update after changing group policy and it doesn't change things.

There are common parts to MS Office Applications/products, so you do get updates apparently for things you don't have installed. I get updates for Outlook that is not installed as well, however I would leave well alone as it is most likely a common component.

Bump, want to give this another shot. Anyone got any ideas on what the issue might be here?

So, whatever I set my update policy to in group policy, in windows update it still says "updates will be donwloaded and installed automatically."

Now I tried to set it to "notify" with Winaero Tweaker and it STILL didn't take (I did press update after using Winaero Tweaker). What the heck is going on?
