How to Add or Remove the New context menu in Windows 10


The New context menu allows users to quickly create new files, folders, or shortcuts in the current location. You can right click or press and hold on your desktop or in any folder window, and click/tap on New to open the New context menu.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the New context menu for all users in Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove the New context menu.


EXAMPLE: New context menu













Here's How:

1. Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you would like to do.


2. To Add New Context Menu
*note This is the default setting.
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

3. To Remove New Context Menu
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Download
4. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

It sounds like you have the New context menu, so I'm not sure what issue you are having.

Are you saying that nothing happens when you click on a new context menu item instead?

 

You are correct - I downloaded the .reg file that you recommended but the current situation is as follows...
1. I cannot create NEW FOLDERS or NEW SUB FOLDERS in My Documents, My Pictures.My Music or My Videos
(I can, howover, still create new folders in Yahoo mail, Outlook mail and in Bookmarks)
The New context menu for eg My Documents, My etc do not show FOLDER or NEW with a dropdown Folder
so there is no possibility to create a new folder.
2. I cannot directly OPEN any folder as previously- I have to right click and select OPEN (not major, but annoying)

Any help would be appreciated - thanks Peter

As a test, download and merge the .reg files for the listed Directory and Folder items in the table of OPTION TWO to see if they may help. They will restore their default associations and registry entries that will hopefully fix this for you.

I am also having a similar problem that none of the fixes have seemed to solve. I cannot create a new folder on my computer anywhere using any function, right click or keyboard shortcut. I can however create new folders in online applications such as Google Drive, only if I'm in a browser window. Any suggestions??

Nothing at all. I get the turning circle for a moment, my screen goes black and then pops back up. It's like the function is being blocked alltogether.

 

Ok. So you have the options, but they are just not working.

If you like, download and merge the reg file for the Folder item linked in the table of Option 2 in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It will restore the default associations and registry entries for folders including "New folder".

Nothing at all. When I right-click I get the MS turning circle for about 1-2 sec, then the screen goes black and pops back on with no action. Same thing if I open WExplorer and hit new. If I use the keyboard shortcut nothing happens at all. It's like the function is being blocked altogether. I can, however, create new files in internet browser windows (i.e. Google Drive).
