I have not tried this, but this link may help you get back to a regular startup. Step 5 in Option 3.

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

I have been on this for 8 hours trying EVERYTHING and nothing worked. I tried this and I was finally able to get into system restore. I was stuck at the login screen with no box to put password and was getting frustrated. Thank you!!!

Like others I had a problem exiting - Command Prompt Safe Mode.
There is no taskbar in Command Prompt Safe Mode.
Windows Key + "R" did nothing so there was no "MSCONFIG" exit.

Finally found my way out using an old Vista laptop and searching the internet.

*Arrow Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10 - Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

Type bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot and hit Enter key. This will turn off safe mode.
Close the Command Prompt window and restart Windows 10. *Smile

I found out the hard way that simply not closing the Command Prompt window before restarting resulted in
still being stuck in Safe Mode. The smallest things can cause confusion. *Confused

The current in the command above is whatever your identifier is.

I prefere to activate the old F8 boot menu

*Arrow Enable or Disable F8 Advanced Boot Options in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

you can access it during boot phase pressing F8 or Shift+F8

executed in an elevated command prompt

is quite useful in case of BSOD
or when you cannot boot from any other reasons
    or your OS is virused

and you have some other interesting options there
like do not restart automatically in case of BSOD , for example

works in 8.x also in 10.x
in xp and 7 this is set as default on a clean install.

Can this be done from the boot drive, not from within windows? Also, if start-up repair doesn't work, nor any repair from outside windows, would being able to boot from safe mode give me more chances to solve my issue? Or do I likely have to do a clean install?

    Thanks.

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

    Hello Jim, *Smile

Yes, you could use Option Two in the tutorial to add Safe Mode at boot.

I'm not sure if Safe Mode may help with your issue here, but it's worth a try.

No, I don't have an insider build. My installation was a clean install around Jan 16 and I'm currently on v1607 Build 14393.1715. I don't have the CU since it hasn't been offered to me yet for my Dell laptop via Windows Update.

I set the recovery image as you suggested (see below) but the laptop still just restarts as normal when I try to enter advanced options using Restart + Shift key or Settings / Recovery / Advanced Startup. The command regentc /boottore does restart the PC with the advanced recovery options (this worked before I created the reset recovery image). What else should I consider?

Update - I solved it. I entered these commands. Reagentc reported it was already enabled but the Advanced Boot options now appear.

    • diskpart
    • select disk 0
    • select partition 1
    • assign letter=R
    • exit
    • reagentc.exe /setreimage /path R:\Recovery\WindowsRE /target C:\windows

    Reagentc / info now reports:

  13. Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

    Hi Shaun / everyone

I am trying to help my elderly next door neighbour who has somehow screwed up her Windows 10 password. She's adamant about what it should be, and there's nothing obvious like caps lock / num lock on. I assume she has accidentally changed it.
So.... I was filled by hope in finding your tutorial for "Option SIX: Boot to Advanced Startup Options from a Hard Reboot", aiming to then follow "Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account in Windows 10" option 5 to reset her password. Phew.

However, within Option Six, I'm not even achieving this:
"3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 above until you see the Windows logo screen or Please wait during boot like below. Usually it may take repeating up to 3 times."

I've lost count of how many times I've cycled through switching on and off..... it jut takes me to the login screen every time. It's a Toshiba Satellite laptop. When switched on it displays "Toshiba - Leading Innovation >>>" before a circle of dots appears and Windows loads. How quickly should I press the power button to switch it off again? I've tried quick.... I've tried slow.... it makes no difference.

My neighbour says the machine is about 4 years old. I believe it was supplied with Windows 8 but then upgraded to Windows 10. She has no media to enable recovery.

    Fingers crossed for a solution....

Hello Dave, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

I suppose you could create a Windows 10 installation USB on any PC, and boot from the USB on her laptop to Windows Setup. You can then open an elevated command prompt at this point to enable the built-in Administrator account.

  15. Thanks for the tip. I am still running Windows 7 myself (my PCs were unsupported for upgrade) but I'm sure I could find someone to create an installation USB.

I found via a Toshiba forum that I could use F12 during startup to enter the BIOS menu, and from that reached a command prompt. I thought that would enable me to continue with "Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account in Windows 10" option 5 but step 7 fails because regedit complains that it is already open, similar to other posts in the thread.

The F12 route also allows me to regress Windows to a restore point but even if I took it back before recent updates I suspect it would not roll back the passwords to the one my neighbour remembers? Sorry - I know the question is off-topic but I can't find a simple answer via Google.

    Thanks for your help.
