Change Account Picture in Windows 10

If this started recently, then you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before you deleted the files to see if that may sort it.

I know this hiccup I'm having is really small potatoes in the scheme of things, but little stuff like this just bugs the heck out of me and I do what I can to understand and resolve.

I can go through settings and the profile area and change the image or choose a new image and it will appear when I hit the Win Key or if I go through the Win+L for a sign on via that path.

But, when I do a 'restart' of the laptop no image appears on the login screen via that routine.

Maybe it has something to do with the 'background' screen with a "spotlight" ??

    Just a thought:
If you deleted the contents of the Default User Account folder and you're not signed in with an MS account, you may continue to see no image on the login screen.

If you click on one of the images in the aforementioned folder, do you get the following prompt?

I have a Microsoft Account and (after a recent update) I got snookered into letting it be the logon for all three of my laptops. After being frustrated with that I finally (via TenForums) how to make the laptops go back to 'local login'. I deleted that other login that was created as well.

So, that will also likely play into what is going on with the one laptop. The other two are not exhibiting this hiccup.

As I noted above ... not a huge deal, but just irritates the heck out of me.

BTW - I did a restore to a few days ago and the errant login with phantom password did come back, but I got that corrected again.

Still no image showing up on the login screen when the laptop is 'restarted'. Images appearing fine with Win Key and Win+L.

Not something I'll lose any sleep over, but will mull it over ... and I'm seriously thinking about starting to sip a cold beer before too long *Wink

  8. Change Account Picture in Windows 10

Hello - I am brand new to Win 10 and have been resisting installation till this week. So now I have a notebook on Win 10 Home and a PC on Win 10 Pro. I upgraded the notebook first from the persistent link following original registration to try out before the PC some weeks later. But this failed from Win 7 for the PC (for particular equipment driver reasons), so I tried via MS Media on advice to avoid the pitfalls and everything (eventually) went through. The only difference here was that the N/B had to upgrade more recently to the new upgrade, while the PC went straight to the latest upgrade.

I am now fine-tuning and have set up log-in via my MS account to sync both machines. The notebook has behaved impeccably, but the PC refuses totally to recognise my account picture (I think everything else seems OK). I tried changing the picture via my MS a/c and the N/B amended immediately, but not the PC. I have been through dozens of web pages for advice and some suggest tinkering with areas of the PC I usually leave well alone! Then I found this excellent explicit string which enabled me to identify the differences on each m/c via the location links listed at the top. From this I find that ...

In the N/B: the default user a/c is populated with 8 different default images + 3 dat files; the current user a/c is poputated with 7 different sized correct images, and the recent user a/c has the correct image in one size.

In the PC: the default user a/c is populated with 8 different default images + 2 dat files; but both the current user a/c and the recent user a/c are empty of any images (excl. desktop.ini) or a GUID subfolder.

I have waited some while to see if the PC would sync, but it doesn't. Can anyone suggest another safe way to do this? ... it is only a small annoyance, but does seem to be a rather silly glitch affecting many! (Can I simply copy images into the two empty directories - although I can't see how that would overwrite the default image?)

Thanks in advance for such an informative forum.

Hello rjhfandclf, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

I'm happy to hear that the tutorial has been able to help.

You might see if turn off and on syncing may be able to toggle it to work for you. The tutorial below has a few different options for doing this that one may work better than the other for you.

  10. Thanks for such a quick reply. I had already tried turning sync on and off, but did try your other routes again as well for this - although the third one didn't seem to be appropriate in this instance. I'm afraid nothing has changed.

It does seem to be just the account picture. If I open other apps that relate to the account (photos, Groove music etc - but I haven't tried everything) these all have the picture by the account name in the menu columns.

    Thanks anyway ... so far!

    It sure is being stubborn.

You might see if changing your Microsoft account picture online at Microsoft below may get it synced to the PC after a bit.

  12. Yes it is stubborn ... I wouldn't mind so much if it was not such a horrible little default image!! I know I am getting old and very grumpy with it, but ... grrr!

Anyway - sorry, but I have tried that already, and have now tried it again, but nothing changes ... except on the little notebook, which updates immediately, of course.

Thanks again for another very quick response. It is now getting late for us olduns over the Pond, so I am giving up for the night. I will talk quietly to the PC (with the threat of a small hammer!) before I go, and see if it can mend its ways by the morning!

    Very many thanks again.

  14. Been out all day today, so only just checked PC. Regrettably there is still no change to the PC account picture. I've also read a load more web pages of complaints about this same problem - the majority appearing to remain unresolved. One solution (not confirmed as successful anywhere) would appear only to change the default picture to a new default of choice by replacing all of these in the default file. Not really a solution - more a hack bodge-up!

Would love to find that someone knows how to resolve this ... even Microsoft ???!
