Change Lock Screen Background in Windows 10

    Hello Julian, *Smile

The lock screen will still show a selected picture with secure sign-in enabled. It just won't show a slide show with it enabled.

At startup, you see the sign-in screen instead.

If you were talking about build 10586-36 then I would agree with you, that is exactly what happened. However with build 10586-63 I now get a plan coloured sign-on screen but the picture when the laptop is locked with Win-L.

This is not an unusual situation, the original 10240 build did exactly the same after an update then reverted to working normally after another update shortly afterwards. So, is this a problem for older computers and if it is what is the solution? Someone needs to investigate and have Microsoft ensure that updates do not screw settings that owners have set up.

    Julian,

It shows the picture I selected on my lock screen in build 11099. It should be the same in your build as well. Double check your lock screen background settings to make sure you are using a "Picture" and not a "Slide Show".

At startup when no user is signed in, you will see the "default" lock screen instead of your selected lock screen. The default one is usually the brown cave image below.

Yep, that's what my thoughts were as well, but was trying to get clarification if Julian meant sign-in screen instead of lock screen. *Smile

No, that is not the problem! The problem is the lock screen is set to show a picture, the picture shows correctly with Win-L lock screen but the Sign-In screen shows plain colour

These were just taken so this is what is happening at the present time. To make the picture appear on the Sign-In Screen, I have to disable Ctrl-Alt-Del, enabling it again after a reboot just gives the same problem.

    Julian,

Your green screenshot is of the "default" system lock screen instead. It's not "your" user lock screen, or the sign-in screen that shows the user accounts.

It appears something has changed it since it should be of the brown cave image I posted above by default.

I haven't tested this below in Windows 10, but you might see if it may change the "default" lock screen image to what you like.

Be sure to create a restore point first. This way if it causes an issue, you can just quickly do a system restore using the restore point to undo it.

    For info:

As I said in a previous post Win 10 Pro x4 build 10240 showed the picture correctly until it was updated. It then reverted to what you see above until the next update, which came soon afterwards. Updating to version 1511 Build 10586-36 left it working correctly but Build 10586-63 seems to have broken it yet again.

I have tried ALL the images, all show EXACTLY the same under the same conditions i.e. CTRL-ALT-DEL on NO image on the screen prior to the accounts page but Windows Background Picture shows on that page. CTRL-ALT-DEL off, my picture on screen that is showing green with but Windows Background Picture shows on accounts page, exactly as set.

    Julian,

You are misunderstanding. The lock screen image you set in Settings will only show on the lock screen while you are signed in to Windows. This is the "your" user lock screen (Win+L).

The green screenshot in your post is for the "default" lock screen that you having the issue with. This is the lock screen that shows at startup when secure sign-in is enabled.

This is what I see after booting:

    First Screen

    Followed after pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del by:

    Second Screen

If I disable Ctrl-Alt-Del screen one becomes my picture and then needs any key pressed to continue to screen 2.

    Correct.

The green screenshot in your post is of the "default" lock screen that you are having the issue with. This is the lock screen that shows at startup when secure sign-in is enabled.

The lock screen image you set in Settings will only show on the Win+L lock screen while you are signed in to Windows, or at startup when you do not have secure sign-in enabled and your account was the last user.

This is NOT what happened with 10586-36!!

I got the image on the FIRST screen after booting with Ctrl-Alt-Del enabled (It has always been enabled on my laptop) so something in 10586-63 has broken or corrupted something. This seems to be an ongoing problem, updates break settings, get sorted then things suddenly start working correctly again, but seemingly not this time!

    Julian,

I'm just letting you know what the screen is of for proper reference, and for how it behaves in 10586.63 in a VM and build 11099 for me. That's all. *Smile

Why it changed for you could indeed be from the update. What I posted above for the "default" lock screen is what I recommended to give a try to change this secure sign-in "default" lock screen back to what you wanted instead.

I have tried using the default pictures, they do exactly the same as my own picture. It seems that updates on Windows 10 are a risky business, you can't guarantee that a properly working PC will still work afterwards. They seem to need more testing to make sure that stupid problems such as this do not occur. I still wonder if the age of the laptop has something to do with the problem, my laptop is nearly 7 years old and I do not want to update as they don't make 1920x1080 RGB LED 16" screens, which I have, any more, pity!
