How to: Change Menu Show Delay Time in Windows 10

How to Change Menu Show Delay Time in Windows 10

The MenuShowDelay property indicates the time, in milliseconds, that the system waits before displaying a cascaded shortcut menu when the mouse cursor is over a submenu item. For example, from within a context menu or menu bar.

This tutorial will show you how to change the amount of time it takes for a menu to pop, fade, or slide open when you hover the mouse pointer over it for your account in Windows 10.

The Fade or slide menus into view and Fade out menu items after clicking visual effects settings will also affect how fast menus open and close. Unchecking these options to turn them off will help speed it up in addition to doing the steps in this tutorial

This will not affect menus in Windows apps (aka: modern apps).

    Here's How:

1 Press the Win + R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit into Run, and click/tap on OK to open Registry Editor.

2 In Registry Editor, navigate to the location below. (see screenshot below)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

3 In the right pane of the Desktop key, double click/tap on the MenuShowDelay string value to modify it. (see screenshot above)

4 Type in a number between 0 to 4000 (400 is default) for how many milliseconds (1000 milliseconds = 1 second) you want the menu to wait before it opens, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

The lower the number, the faster the response time. If you use an entry of 0, there is no menu display delay. However it is not recommended to use 0 since the menus may be hard to navigate through at that speed. 20 is a good number to use.

    5 Close Registry Editor.

6 restart the computer to apply.

    That's it,
    Shawn

Major issues with Explorer, taskbar, start menu, and Task Manager

Recently, my PC seems to start up slowly. Today I saw there were some system events about NTFS corruption, so I did a disk scan with automatic repair. After computer rebooted, I'm suddenly having a lot more problems. I'll describe the symptoms I've noticed
so far. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    ================================

    * The start menu doesn't show, neither pressing Windows key nor left-clicking works. Right-clicking on the start icon, the context menu still shows without delay.

    * Windows Search/Cortana stopped working. I can still show/hide the search box on the taskbar. If it's shown, it doesn't respond to mouse clicks. If it's hidden or just an icon, I can't launch it by any means.

    * On taskbar, there's a blank space where the Microsoft Edge icon used to be, but if I mouse over that blank space, the "Microsoft Edge" tooltips text still show up, and if I click it, Edge still launches, after a long delay. All other taskbar icons are still
    there.

    * When I right-click on Edge blank space, the context menu takes a long time to pop up. Context menu for other taskbar icons pop up without delay.

    * For some types of items/files, the right-click context menu takes a long time to show (about 10 seconds), during the delay the busy icon spins and explorer or desktop becomes unresponsive.

Slow context menu types include: shortcuts, directories, This PC, Network, EXE, PNG, JPG, HTM

Fast context menu types include: TXT, PDF, CFG, XML (surprise since HTM is slow), random file types

    * When starting Task Manager, it stays busy and "not responding" for a long time before showing anything. When switching to Details tab for the first time, it takes a long time before the process list is populated, but during this delay Task Manager is still
    responsive.

Start Menu will not work after updates are installed

After every windows 10 update I loose the Start Menu for some period of time. Then after some delay ( a day or two) magically the Start Menu starts working again. Why?

This is for how long it takes a menu to show when you expand open a menu in Windows. For example, expanding open "New" in the context menu.
