  1. Computer comes to a halt when performing mild tasks

    Hello

I have never had this issue. I just built a relatively high performance computer and if I, for example, change my monitors from 60hz to 144hz, the cursor stops entirely... if i have task manager up, it spots updating. If i load an intensive app, the cursor stops and moves real funny and similar with task manager. Something has to be causing this. I have never had this issue on a computer before.

I am not hitting high temperatures, I am not getting high CPU/RAM/Disk usage. The computer is just stopping for no apparent reason. The lights on my keyboard stop, etc. I'm starting to worry that this is a hardware issue. I have 2 clean installs of windows 10 on this computer. One on a samsung 960 nvme ssd and one on a samsung 950 evo sata ssd. Both same issues

    Specs
    i7-6800k
    Asus X99 Deluxe II
    32gb corsair dominator 3000mhz ddr4
    Corsair 1000watt PSU
    Samsung 960 evo, samsung 950 evo 250gb
    2x Powercolor RX 570
    6x Acer XF270HU

    Things i've tried
    Overclock, no over clock
    Different mouse/keyboard
    clean install OS
    Latest driver updates for EVERYTHING

I cannot think of what could be causing this, but there has to be some way to diagnose. Any ideas?

Edit: ram checks out with memtest, pulled video cards and ran each individually and switched slots. Ran occt on psu with no apparent issues. When running occt on psu or video card, the second timer halts and when hints resume we are at about 10 seconds. Obviously still experiencing the problem

    :)

Cortana uses my computer's memory, even though it's turned off. Why???

Whenever I turn on my laptop computer, (every time) it halts and starts and halts and starts. This makes typing an email or office document extremely irritating. I know that my "problem" is Cortana. I have turned off this application, but, when I run the
task manager, I see that Cortana is actively using my computer's resources - sometimes using 85% of the memory. I then tell task manager to end that task. It does, but in 10 seconds, here comes Cortana again, using more memory. I end task again and it pops
up again. It usually takes 4 or 5 trys to actually get it to stop.

How can I get this dang app to STOP?

  3. Task Manager does not come on top when called.

There are times where some programs halt and freeze and when Task Manager is called, does not stay on top, can not be selected and the user can not use it to stop the halted program.

This sort of annoyance is worse in 10 than a few times it happened when i used win 7.

Are there plans to make Task Manager to be forced to stay on top and be operable under any circumstances or this thing will continue?

    Have you had any bsod?
Have you viewed task manager contemporaneously with the hangs?
Have you used the Windows performance recorder during the problems?

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste these commands:
    1) winver (on the pop up view the windows version and build and post in the forum)
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dsim /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) chkdsk /scan
    5) msconfig (on the pop up move the dot from normal startup to selective startup, uncheck load startup items, click services tab, on lower left check hide all Microsoft services, on lower right click disable all, click apply or ok, do not reboot)
    6) taskmgr (on the pop up click the startup tab, click the status column so that it sorts with enable rising to the top, right click on every enable and change to disable)
    7) shutdown /r

You should now be in clean boot.
Monitor your performance. Are the boots shorter or longer. Are the shutdowns shorter or longer, Are their still hangs? Have they improved? Have they gone away?

For the memory testing Memtest86+ with 8 or more runs is preferred. Sometimes it takes run in the teens to find memory problems.

Please report each in the thread:
    winver
    scannow
    restorehealth
    scan

  5. no BSOD, everything stable. I often have HWmonitor and task manager up. As I said, when this happens, everything freezes (all the numbers on task manger and hwmontior). I have never used windows performance recorder. Looks like this is a download?

Version 1703 Build 15063.332 (this was happening before the creators update)
    WRP found no integrity violations
DISM - Image version 10.0.15063.0 operation completed successfully
    Chkdsk came clean, no issues
Memtest ran all night last night... i think it only hit 7 or 8 passes.. all good

Clean boot. boots a little faster, as expected, i have corsair cue software on boot which takes a second. Still same issue. When i load a program or something, the mouse is all shaky and the task manager numbers fail to update. It happens when i put in a usb device. I run this computer pretty lean, it was already on selective startup, only having corsair cue running and windows defender. once again, this is happening to me on 2 different copies of the OS..

I am actually going to leave the system completely like this (clean boot) with the exception of Corsair CUE. Everything else seems kinda unnecessary anyway.

In the left lower corner search type msinfo32.
Using onedrive please post a share link.

As preventative maintenance and stress testing consider the following:

Install software to monitor temperature ie speedfan it also has drive checking capability
SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Perform a drive tests with HD tune, HD sentinel, or Crystal Disk or Sea tools for windows
    http://www.seagate.com/support/downl...ls-win-master/
How to use SeaTools for Windows
CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World
    HD Tune website
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring

Perform CPU and GPU stress testing.

Please make note of the importance of temperature monitoring and aborting the test in the GPU link.

This may be a useful checklist. Like you I prefer the fastest boot times with selective boot. Then whatever I need is turned on. Some people always use a few applications and these could be enable on boot. It's a compromise or personal preference.

  8. Computer comes to a halt when performing mild tasks

Here is a link to that info:
    Uploadfiles.io - info.txt

hdtune - benching while typing this, all good. no errors
Furmark - can run 7680x1440 with no issues. can move mouse fluidly etc. 85 was max gpu temp
Prime95 - am running while im typing this, no issues. cpu showing 52c fans not even spinning up

All temps in check out... one weird reading on Speedfan at 127C for AUXIN0.... same at idle or running/ AUXINT2 reads 7c... im guessing errors

I will run these stress tests longer at night, as i know some of these take time to error. However, it is 80 degrees in the room here, 12 higher than i usually keep it... so its a good environment to stress test. I'm reasonably sure none of my equipment is getting out of check in temperature, etc. I believe my drives are fine (especially as I am dual booting on two separate drives, low chance of two failures.) Same with video cards... issues with either card, low chance of both failing.

  9. Still havent figured this one out. What i don't understand most is how i never can replicate the issue in benchmarks. This happens in games like CS:GO... the FPS wont drop or anything, it will just stop and then resume again. Same with applications. These are light tasks, not heavy tasks like benchmarking or encoding.

    Tasks I can replicate
Insert usb drive (any drive, any port)
Adjust monitor refresh rate (any monitor, either video card)
Loading of corsair CUE (with or without corsair keyboard/mouse attached). Loading photoshop, for example, no has issues.

This file I was not able to open as Windows defender is displaying: info.txt is unsafe to download and was blocked by Windows Defender SmartScreen. Please use onedrive for posts.

To replicate the issue you might be able to do that by changing clean boot to normal but and rerunning the stress tests. At this point that may just be academic.
Did you view task manager or WPR at any time during the stress testing?
Have you had any more hangs since you have placed the computer in clean boot?

  11. I do not have onedrive. Clean boot has no effect whatsoever. TGask manager was open the whole time during the testing, along with speedfan. Everything seems normal there. 100% usage on whatever i was testing, but computer still moving fluidly. Benchmarks/stress testing are the same with or without (run flawlessly) on both boot drives, and the hangs are still there and during:

insert usb drive (any drive, any port)
Adjust monitor refresh rate (any monitor, either video card)
    Loading of corsair CUE

and in cs go and etc, just those are examples i can repeat easily.

  12. I have Prime95 running, HD tune, 15 instances of memtest, furmark across 3 screens... i am typing this with no issue. I cannot replicate the issue under stress. Drawing only 550w of power from the wall doing all this. CPU tmps are 49c gpu 72c

  13. Computer comes to a halt when performing mild tasks

ok nvm just got it. Turned off all tests, only doing memtests now and it paused when i tried to move this window. pauing now here and there. cannot see what i am typing. Does this mean its a memory issue? I never come near maxing out my memory in my normal tasks ( i have 32gb), but could some of the memory have issues?

Kind of at a loss here because I have tried running just one stick, changing slots etc. and all produced same issues. Also never got an error in the memtests
