How to Display UWP Apps in Full Screen View in Windows 10

Universal Windows apps (aka: modern apps) can now be opened in resizable windows on your desktop like any other app now in Windows 10.

When you display a universal app in full screen view, it will not always stay that way. The next time you open the app, it will display in a window on your desktop as usual.

While you have tablet mode turned on, app will always open in full screen view and cannot be reduced.

This tutorial will show you how to display UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps in full screen view in Windows 10.

    CONTENTS:

OPTION ONE [/i] To Display App in Full Screen View
    1. While you have a UWP app open, press the Shift+Win+Enter keys to toggle full screen off and on.

OPTION TWO [/i] To Display App in Full Screen View
    1. While you have a UWP app open in a desktop window view, click/tap on the Full screen button

OPTION THREE [/i] To Exit Full Screen View for an App
    1. While you have a UWP app open in full screen view, do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.

    2. Swipe down from top border or move pointer to top border of the app to have the title bar slide down, and click/tap on the Exit full screen button

    3. If you have multiple displays, then you can also click/tap on the app's taskbar icon to minimize it, and click/tap on the app's taskbar icon to restore full screen again.

    That's it,
    Shawn

    Hello Spapakons, *Smile

Is there a specific free game that does this? I'll see if I can test with it to see what's up.

The title bar should slide down from the top when you move the pointer to the edge of the top border, or swipe down on a touch screen. Double check to make sure the app is active by clicking in it first.

I've updated the tutorial to include screenshots of Microsoft Mahjong to help. *Smile

Just checked, yes this works in my test computer (Windows 10 Pro 32-bit build 10586), but not in my main computer (Windows 10 Pro 64-bit build 10240). Did I do something with the settings and disabled this? Anyway.

Could be an issue in that build. You might update it to TH2 build 10586 when you get a chance to see if it works properly afterwards.

I checked again. In my test PC (Windows 10 Pro 32-bit build 10586, resolution 1024x768) works. In my Virtual PC (VMWare, Windows 10 Pro 32-bit build 10586, resolution 1440x900) works. In my main PC (Windows 10 Pro 64-bit build 10240, resolution 1440x900) doesn't. I thought it has to do with my main PC using non-standard resolution, but not. I will try it again once I upgrade to build 10586. Thank you for your time.

Hello! I just upgraded in Windows 10 Pro 64-bit TH2 (build 10586). I tested and I have no problems now. When I put the mouse on top of the full screen app, the bar appears where I can resume to window or minimize or close the app. Probably there was some system file issue in build 10240 that was fixed while upgrade replaced my system files. *Wink

    Thank you Bink.

Hi, i have a similar problem: I'm playing "Dragon Mania Legends" (from Windows Store) on my Windows 10 Laptop. Yesterday I installed the 1511-Upgrade for Windows 10. From then, i cannot enter windowed mode in "Dragon Mania Legends" anymore. Before installing the Upgrade it worked like a charm, but now the button is simply missing in the Titlebar and in the system-menu, also.
Another game i play is "Cloud raiders" - A Windows Store-Game, also. This game never had a windowed mode in Windows 10. Neither before the Upgrade nor after it.
My question is: Can an App control, if Windows 10 provides the windowed mode or not? I thought EVERY App now can be run in windowed mode. Is this wrong?
    thx in advance,

Some games load maximized or full screen, you cannot play in a window smaller than the desktop size. But this is not a problem, as long as the controls appear to minimize or close the game when you move the mouse over the top. In my case the control didn't appear, no matter what I did, until I upgraded to build 10586 and they work now.

Hello Francois, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

On some apps you will need to either swipe down from the top edge of a touch screen, move the pointer to the center of the top edge to have the title bar slide down, or click/tap on a button on the center of the top edge to have the title bar slide down.

Double check to see if you may have either option.
