Windows 10: Frozen on blank screen when turning on PC/Can't sign in

Hey, TenForums community! I was wondering if you could assist me with something.

When I turn my PC on, the first time, it now goes to a blank screen where I can't use keyboard commands/mouse gestures at all.

When I force power it off and turn it back on, then sometimes it loads past the Windows logo screen, but then after I unlock the screen to sign in, it just shows nothing instead of a place to type in my password.

If I power it off and try again, SOMETIMES I'm lucky enough to actually get the sign in screen.

Anyone have any idea why this is?! I've notice whether or not my keyboard's Num Lock light on sometimes determines whether or not the login screen shows up.... or that's just superstitious.

The issue started happening since the anniversary update. I have since reset my PC and reinstalled all programs, and it still hasn't helped .

Windows 10 update failed - Laptop not booting up

I started the upgrade to Windows 10 today but the process has frozen. Now all I am getting is a blank screen on my laptop and nothing is happening. I tried to turn the laptop off and restart but that hasn't helped either. When I restart, the windows icon
comes up followed by blank screen. Can anyone please suggest a solution. Thanks

 

Upon startup in windows 10 I do not get a sign-in screen, only backlite shows.

the computer will turn on and appears to startup ok. but there is no display, only a blank screen when it gets to the sign-in. with a blank screen I clicked and entered my password. it appears that I did sign-in as I heard the notifications bells but
still a blank screen.

WHAT is it? I'm a first time user of this forum and would be very thankful for any help on this problem.

Try starting Windows in Safe Mode and signing into your account.

Also, you could try to Go back to a previous build of Windows 10. It is my understanding you can do so within 10 days of installing the update.

If you are unable to boot into Windows, you can go back to the previous build by booting to:
Advanced Startup Options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > See more recovery options > Go back to previous build.

To get there, do a hard reboot by pressing and holding the power button until it powers off.
Press the power button to turn it back on.
(This may take a few attempts of powering off, and then back on...)

 

If you can get into safe mode, I would look at updating your video driver. That's typically the cause of these black screens.

Sadly, it's been past 10 days since I updated. Also, I'm fairly certain it's not a video driver issue... it's more like it hangs in limbo. For example my 360 controller flashes continually when its in that state, seemingly to indicate that its stuck and can't boot. The only reason I'm able to get it to boot at all is because it makes special checks after a force shut down, in which case I can mash the "delete" key and get to the bios, and boot Windows from there.

Like I mentioned before, sometimes it gets stuck on the sign in screen, and I can never login.

This is pretty distressing.... but I'll keep trying to troubleshoot.

Is there a movable cursor, or is the cursor missing/locked in one place? If the former:

see if you can use CTRL/ALT/DEL to force Task Manager to pop up. If you get it up, check for detail view for explorer.exe running, try to start it manually from "new task".

If the system is physically locked up and the cursor won;t move, then boot to an Install Medium, and get into your recovery options, run System Restore from there. A Graphics Card update could cause this, and rolling it back might fix it.

At the login screen, where the password box is missing, do you see a Network icon at the bottom right corner of the screen?
If so, for a temporary solution, click on the Network icon, and then click on the screen. Does the password box show up?

If so, press Start and R simultaneously, then type in msconfig in the Open box of the Run prompt.

In System Configuration, click the Boot tab.
Under Boot options is Safe Boot selected, along with Active Directory repair ?

If so, uncheck Safe Boot and restart.

Does the password box show, and does not disappear after another restart?

If you can get to where you can get in, let us know. There is another place where we may be able to effect a change.
