Windows 10: How do I stop windows 10 update 1079

Each time I turn on my computer I am greeted with a failure "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709 - Error 0x80d02002" After a lot of digging I found that my pc has not been tested with 1709 and it appears to be incompatible with the update. Is there a way to stop this update as I see the error daily and my pc fails at every attempt to update? Thanks and have a nice day.

Update 1709 causes issues on my computer. I recovered my computer to a time before the update and the issues went away. But now 1709 has installed again and I want to stop it.

For a temporary fix, you could change your internet connection to Metered.

But, you then should go about the task of figuring out why it's failing. Chances are, there are some things that can be done to your system to get the update to install properly. The first thing to do is fill in your system specs so we can help you with that.

I filled in the specs for my laptop, but like I mentioned earlier it would appear from the HP site hat this laptop does not support 1709. Perhaps I am misinterpreting their data.

Looking at their site, I don't see your model at all, for any version of W10, but that doesn't mean it won't work; it just means they haven't officially tested it.

I also checked on your graphics, and it seems there is an issue with gaming, but Intel are working on it, and expect a fix in Q1, 2018 (soon).

The CPU should be no problem; there are lots of members here (including myself) who have W10 on very old equipment, and it runs fine.

There are a few things I would suggest doing first, just to make sure the system is in good health. (You're on v1607, which is pretty old.)

Turn off Fast Startup
Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
Shut the system down and restart it, to take affect.

Check the health of your hard drive:
Crystal Disk Info
Download Center - Crystal Dew World
Grab the standard edition, exe and install it.

Run CHKDSK on your drive.
Open File Manager, go to This PC, right-click the C drive, select Properties. In the Tools tab, select error checking - CHECK.
If there are any problems with the filesystem, Windows will schedule an off-line scan at next boot. Go ahead and do that.

Run System File Checker
Open an Admin Command Prompt and type sfc /scannow and press enter. Wait for the scan to finish. The answer we're looking for is no violations found. If the answer is anything else, reboot and run it again, up to three times. If it still doesn't give us the answer we're looking for, we'll need to try some other things.

Once these are complete, we can move on. Probably the best thing will be to download the ISO from Microsoft and do an in-place upgrade. When doing that, all peripherals should be disconnected from the machine. But that's later.

 

Are there any more permanent fixes? I'm desperate to find a way to prevent this update, too.

You really can't just permanently stay on v1607. MS will eventually stop supporting that version and you'll be in a pickle (no security updates).

I realize it's referring to v1511, but you get the idea. You really should troubleshoot the system to get it in shape for updates, but, it's up to you of course.

With Creators Update, Microsoft has made it a little easier to control updates in Windows 10.

If you are running Windows 10 Creators Update (1703), you can delay security updates for up to 30 days. Likewise, you can defer feature updates to 365 days.

As always, these new update settings are exclusive to Windows 10 Professional, Enterprise, and Education editions. You might not see these options on Windows 10 Home edition.

1. Open Settings app. Navigate to Update & security and then Windows Update.

2. Under Update settings section, click Advanced options link. This action will open Advanced update options page.

3. Under Choose when updates are installed section, there are three options:

a) Choose the branch readiness level to determine when feature updates are installed

b) A feature update includes new capabilities and improvements.

c) A quality update includes security improvements.


The second option allows you delay feature updates up to 365 days. You can choose any number between 1 and 365 from the drop-down box.

How old is Norton Security Suite? Is it part of a package from an Internet Service Provider? Has it been upgraded? Updated?

In my case, I didn't get upgraded from 1607 to 1709 until coincidentally my Norton 360 got upgraded.

Strangely, and possibly off-topic, I also had an error 0x80072efd 'early' in the upgrade process from 1607 to 1709. I had left the upgrade process unattended early because I knew the download would take a while. When I returned, the error message in a window was there to greet me. During that time, the machine was still processing the upgrade 'intensely' in CPU and disk activity. ??? When CPU activity quieted down to < 10%, I made active the Windows Update service window and clicked 'Restart'. The upgrade process then continued for several more hours after that, as if the error message was but a passing meteor.

 

I have Norton provided by comcast. It has been updated and is current to the best of my knowledge,

 

Norton 360 was upgraded to 22.12.0.103 last week.

Prior to the upgrade(s), both Norton and Windows 10, Windows Defender did not exist in my TaskManager. After the upgrade(s), Windows Defender coexists with Norton in TaskManager.

There was the warning often heard that one shouldn't use two separate security programs that perform the same functions. Apparently, Norton has relinquished some function back to Microsoft.
