Windows 10: How to make different computers see network the same way.

That Kaspersky setting doesn't appear to be a significant difference. Anything else installed only on Home that could account for this?

There's always a possibility that the install of Home is 'broken' in some way (you did mention problems with 'sleep' settings before). You could try...

sfc /scannow - Run SFC Command in Windows 10
Dism's RestoreHealth - Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

...and if they don't fix it, an in-place repair upgrade will reinstall Windows while keeping all your installed apps and documents.

It's 10:30 PM. I will try out those possibilities tomorrow, starting with comparison of installed programs.

 

Go to Registry Editor

• In HKEY_Local_Machine
  System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\everyoneIncludesanonymous
  change the value from 0 to 1
  
• In HKEY_Local_Machine
  System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters\restrictnullsessaccess change value from 1 to 0

 

That is one of the four methods that failed for me that I was referring to in my earlier post (post #24). I just verified that the registry is still set to those values. It is and I still can't "turn off password protected sharing." The option is still not persistent.

 

Prior to a making a repair install of Windows 10, I attempted to use Macrium Reflection Free to make a recovery stick and a disk image -- but the recovery stick wouldn't work.
I made a recovery stick by formatting a Scandisk 16 bit USB stick as FAT32. I created the content using all the defaults of Macrium Reflect Free. I took the stick out, shut down the laptop, plugged in the stick. Nothing happened -- it did not start.

The computer is an HP Spectre. UEFI boot order:
#1 OS Boot Manager
#2 UBS Diskette on Key/USB Hard Disk
#3 USB CD/DVD ROM Drive
#4 ! USB Network Adapter

Moving #3 under #1, Stick does not start PC when plugged in, but PC does start when unplugged.

Moving #3 over #1, Stick does not start PC when plugged it, or when unplugged.

What is the correct boot order for the memory stick to start the PC? What else does it take to get the PC to start from the memory stick?

EDIT: Never mind, the solution was -- moving #2 above #1, plugin stick, push start button, Macrium7 recovery stick menu opens.

but still "turn off password protected sharing " is not persistent.

The AV programs were uninstalled. The install did not run as the tutorial shows. I could not find a way to capture an ISO file. It downloaded mediacreationtool.exe which I ran. I was not offered any choices about my system or my choices about keeping personal files, but it appeared to replace windows. My files and apps were kept automatically.

 

To make install media as an ISO or a USB you run the MCT and choose the option to 'Create installation media for another PC'.

 

I downloaded the MTC again using option 3 of the tutorial and selected [Create installation media for another PC] and saved windows.iso to the desktop.

But I can't mount it. Double click doesn't work: it starts [Open with ISO Viewer] but setup.exe produces the message: "The file autorun.dll could not be loaded or is corrupt. Setup cannot continue. Error code is (0x7E)

 

You can't upgrade 32-bit Windows 10 (if that's what you have) to 64-bits, so mounting the ISO is no help. If you have a 3rd-party ISO viewer installed (Cyberlink ISO Viewer?) then that probably explains why double-click is not working, it's the MS default but the defaults may have been changed. File > Open with... > explorer.exe would mount using the native built-in windows 10 function.

It would, if you are trying to run a 64-bit .dll on a 32 bit system. The only way to install 64-bit Windows 10 is a clean install, for that you must boot from the install media.

A clean install will loose all your installed programs and your files, so make sure you have everything you need backed up before starting, and that you have the install media and keys for any software you want to reinstall.

Burn the ISO to a DVD and boot from that to start a clean install. If you don't have a DVD drive it is possible to make a bootable USB from the ISO, ask if you need to do that.

If on the other hand this IS a 64-bit system, then either the ISO is corrupted, or 'ISO Viewer' makes it appear so.

 

But this computer has 64 bit hardware with 64 bit Windows 10 Home. The tutorial "Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade" says "If you have a 64-bit Windows 10, then you must use a 64-bit ISO or USB."

Another matter is that the date (upper left of screen)on that tutorial by Shank Brink is (20 March 2018) when loaded on my Windows 10 Home laptop, but (14 Aug 2015) when loaded on my Windows 10 Pro desktop. Both computers address the same URL. I wonder if that could indicate another problem with the laptop?

I have investigated that. It's not the PCs, just a quirk of the site software.

Note that it says on the left 'published 15 Aug 2015' and on the right 'last updated a week ago'. If you sign out it just has a date on the left, and that seems to be the date of the last update. So both PCs were correct, just that one wasn't signed in.

Edit: reported this now.

 

On the subject of the thread, I have a clean install from the 24th on my main PC and a clean install from the 30th (both March) on my 2nd PC. The main PC only sees the other PC but the other PC sees this both. I can still access the files/folders by typing \\ComputerName and it shows though. This must be some quirks or w/e in Windows 10 still not worked out. I have no 3rd party firewall or add on to the Windows Firewall. It just does this.

Funny part is, some days the old PC I have to type the name to see my main but the main sees both. Just the opposite. I guess it is the way Windows 10 wants to look that day. Both are Win10 Pro 64bit version 16299.334
