  1. Incredibly Poor Performance on a Powerful Laptop.

    Hello

I have owned this computer for about a year and it has started to struggle with very simple tasks such as gaming on small games that it really should not have any problems with. I cannot play any games without having FPS fluctuations anywhere and I have updated all my drivers. I think. *Biggrin

I have tried using Nvidia Experience to Optimize my games, but that just makes them harder to run as it makes the graphics too good and my computer can't run it.

What on earth is going on?

I hope you can help and have updated all my specs.

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

    poor performance of laptop

    Hi Manikanta,

There are several reasons why devices encounter poor performance. It may due to the memory capacity of the hard disk, malware and virus, out-of-date drivers, programs running on background, and some other reasons. There are different ways to solve the performance
issue depending on what's causing it.

We'd like to learn more about your concern, so we can determine the best solution. Can you provide the answer to the following questions:

    • What is your device and its specification?
    • Are you using multiple programs at the same time?
    • Is this happening to all programs you open?
    • Is this happening upon start up or just randomly?
    • What type of upgrade did you do to your PC?

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Hi youngtomlin

What version and build of Windows 10 are you running? Windows key + R, type winver, enter

What is task manager reporting. Is it your disk, your CPU, your memory or network working hard, over 60% with nothing started?

Are any drivers in device manager reporting issues, yellow exclamation marks?

Have you run Chkdsk on storage drive to perform a scan? Is it clean?

Are windows Updates failing? Start > Settings > Update and security > view update history

Have you run sfc /scannow to see if it is reporting any corruption. Right click start, either command prompt(admin) or Power Shell (admin), enter command, sfc /scannow, enter.

If malwarebytes is the free version when is the last time you invoked a complete scan? You may want to completely uninstall Malwarebytes as a test. Not saying it is malwarebytes and it is just a test.

  5. Hello. Thanks for helping me

My version of Windows is Windows 10 Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.125)

I have attached an image of my Task Manager which seemed to be OK.
My Device Manager was all OK, no exclamation marks.
Chkdsk was run on a reboot, not sure if the log is needed but was found through Event Viewer and attached.
    Updates all installed fine

    scannow came back all fine
Uninstalled Malwarebytes for the time being.

Thanks for helping me and I hope this will help.

Incredibly Poor Performance on a Powerful Laptop.

There were approximately 7 crashes between 11/27 and 12/18/2017
There was 1 critical thermal event.
There was 1 crash dump failed and no dumps.
The event logs display controlled WHEA errors.

For all tests/steps please post images into the thread.
If there are problems posting images please use one drive or drop box share links.

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
    5) chkdsk /x /f /r
This may take many hours so plan to run overnightC:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /x /f /rThe type of the file system is NTFS.Cannot lock current drive.Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by anotherprocess. Would you like to schedule this volume to bechecked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: y
    reboot

    6) use the information in this link to find the chkdsk report in the event viewer and post the report into the thread:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

    7) If you use Ccleaner > click windows tab > scroll down to system and advanced > post an image into the thread
    8) In the left lower corner search type clean > open disk cleanup > scroll up and down > post images into the thread
    9) In the left lower corner search type: system or system control > open system control panel > on the left pane click advanced system settings
    > on the advanced tab under startup and recovery click settings > post an image of the startup and recovery into the thread.
    > on the advanced tab under performance > click on settings > click on advanced tab > under virtual memory click on change > post an image of the virtual memory tab into the thread
    10) In the left lower corner search type services > open windows error reporting service > scroll to the startup type column > right click > left click on properties > post an image into the thread

    14) Run HDTune:
    HD Tune website
    to check the health,
scan for errors, no quick scan but full scan
    run a benchmark.
It may take some time, but please take the time you need to perform it properly.
When above is done please make screenshots of the following
    the health,
    the error scan,
    the benchmark incl. following
    transfer rate,
    access time,
    burst rate,
    cpu usage.

SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer
SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

    16) Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
This may take hours so plan to run it overnight.
Please make sure you use the Memtest86+ version 5.01 with the link below.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
The testing is done not by time but by passes.
    The more passes the better.
There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
There is 32 GB of RAM on the computer.
    Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
If you need to use the computer preventing the full test on 32 GB RAM you can remove 16 GB and test 16 GB for 2 tests so that all of the RAM / DIMM are tested.
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes.
When Memtest86+ has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

A few thoughts that occur- assuming tests above on hardware and system file and disk integrity pass:

    1. Is your graphics card actually used?
    NVIDIA Optimus Technology |NVIDIA UK
Optimus may actually prevent it being used. You could check using e.g. GPU-Z or the NVIDIA icon in the system tray which will tell you if anything is using it.

    2. Check back in your Update History if you know when this started. See if you can correlate that with any update or in particular driver update.

    3. Sometimes people find they need to use an OLDER graphics driver after upgrading to the FCU build 1709.

If any of the games are "older" do you have the Visual C++ from 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013 installed ?

  12. I have made sure through Nvidia Control Panel that everyone uses "High-End Processor". The game I am trying to play only game out last year but I have all C++ from 2013-2008 only missing 2012.

Big problem though, I can't seem to boot from either a USB or an Disk for Memtest. I have tried boot manager and BIOS, the boot device is selected first, however, my computer just boots normally, however it hangs for a second especially when using a Disk while the Drive spins so I'm guessing I might have burnt it incorrectly. I'm not sure though and I have no idea why it's not booting.

Thank you all for all the help you have given me and I will keep trying to boot Memtest and get these results to you.

I downloaded GPU-Z just to check and the first driver that came up was my Intel, this may mean nothing though as it might just mean that it's my integrated card, but I thought I would mention it.
