Windows 10: OneDrive Message Center Updates February 1 to 28

Hi everyone,

Here are the latest updates to the OneDrive service that shipped in February 2019 or coming soon in March 2019!

We have some great improvements coming to the product in February 2019 and early March 2019 including:

OneDrive desktop client sync behavior

Updates to the Shared with me experience on OneDrive mobile

A new sharing settings page for the SharePoint admin center in Office 365 and

A new ability to customize the help message that users see when they are blocked from sharing externally by policy.

New settings to control OneDrive desktop client’s auto-pause behavior

Available Now

You can now control the OneDrive sync client’s auto-pause behavior on your PC when your device is connected to a metered network or if your device is in battery saver mode. New controls are located in OneDrive sync client settings under the “Settings” tab.

OneDrive desktop client settings

By default, the OneDrive sync client will automatically pause whenever a device connects to a metered network or switches to a battery saver mode*. You can override this behavior by un-checking the corresponding checkboxes in the Settings tab. These settings are respected across your personal OneDrive and OneDrive for Business instances.

*Note that the option to enable/disable auto-pause when the device is in battery saver mode will not be visible if the device does not use a battery as a power source (plugged-in desktop PC, etc.)

Administrators can manage these settings globally through provided group policies. Read about them here.

Shared With Me on OneDrive Mobile Updates

Starting rollout in February 2019

We are rolling out updates to the Shared with Me experience in mobile to include new metadata including who shared the file with you and when. In addition, new sorting options around this additional metadata will be available. Finally, you’ll be able to group content in this view by who shared content with you and when so it is as easy as possible for you to find the content you are collaborating on.

Updated sharing page for the SharePoint admin center in Office 365

Rolling out in early March 2019

As part of our efforts to update the SharePoint admin center in Office 365, we are proud to announce that the sharing page is now available! This page has been re-designed from the ground up to be easier to use and understand and we’ve made some fantastic performance improvements as well. We’ll continue to improve this page (including introducing the last few settings that are still available only in classic).

Custom Sharing Help Link

Now Available

We’re introducing a new IT administrator feature that allows you to provide a custom link to end users when they are blocked from sharing externally by policy. For example, this can be used if you want to direct users to explain why external sharing is disable or if you want to direct them to an internal portal where they can request a policy change. This feature is only available via the latest version of SharePoint Online Management Shell with the command Set-SPOTenant -CustomizedExternalSharingServiceUrl http://<your url>.com.

OneDrive Message Center Updates July 1st-15th

We are excited to announce three new updates coming to the OneDrive desktop client this month. These features will help users feel more in control, empowered to provide feedback, and better educated about what’s happening with their files.

Pause OneDrive sync when Battery Saver is on

Begins rolling out to customers in July 2018

To help conserve battery life on Windows devices, we are making improvements to the OneDrive desktop client to automatically pause sync whenever the device switches to “battery saver” mode.

As soon as we detect that a device enters “battery saver mode” we will automatically pause syncing and show a Windows toast notification informing you of why the desktop client was paused. Once we detect that the device is no longer in “battery saver” mode, OneDrive will auto-resume.

We will also give you the option to ‘Sync anyway’, which will un-pause sync and will respect your selection while OneDrive is running (until you sign-out or exit OneDrive or shut down your device) even if the devices switches to/from “battery saver” mode.

In addition to the toast, OneDrive Activity Center will inform you that OneDrive is paused because the device is in “battery saver” mode

Send Feedback

Begins rolling out to customers in July 2018

You are now able to send positive or negative feedback to us as well as suggest new ideas by clicking on “Send Feedback” under OneDrive desktop client settings/preferences menu from any device running the OneDrive desktop client.

You can send us feedback on what we are doing right or what we need to improve on and address, as well as suggest a new idea by clicking on either “I like something”, “I don’t like something”, or “I have a suggestion”. If you have a suggestion or an idea, clicking on “I have a suggestion” will take you to our UserVoice site where you can submit a new idea or upvote an existing one. If your organization has “Report a problem” disabled, the same policy will also disable “Send feedback”.

Updated Activity Center

Begins rolling out to customers in July 2018

We’ve modernized the OneDrive Activity Center to improve ease of use and understanding. The Activity Center is your go-to place for seeing the status of the OneDrive desktop client or to customize your experience. This experience will begin rolling out to customers in late July

Update for Surface Laptop - February 28, 2018

Today we've released a new firmware update for Surface Laptop. This update includes new firmware for Surface System Aggregator Firmware which improves battery reliability.

This update is available in MSI format from the Surface Laptop Drivers and Firmware page at the Microsoft Download Center. Click Download to download the following files:

For your reference, here is the driver version that is updated in this release and the improvement it provides:

OneDrive is making it easier to find relevant documentation by moving all of our to docs.microsoft.com and unifying them in the OneDrive Documentation Hub! This hub will be your home for finding answers to questions, learning more about OneDrive and getting guidance on how to deploy OneDrive in your organization! Even better, docs.microsoft.com is built on top of GitHub so anyone with an account can provide feedback or suggestions on how to make our documentation even better. Update to OneDrive and SharePoint versioning changes

A few months ago, we announced some changes to the versioning experience in OneDrive and SharePoint. Based on your valuable feedback, we will be making changes to the functionality and timing of this feature. We will be providing an option to opt out of the site versioning requirements. More details will be coming to the original versioning blog post and to Message Center so be sure to keep an eye on them!

OneDrive remembers your preferred column sorting

Begins rolling out to customers today

OneDrive now remembers your preferred sorting order across browser sessions. The OneDrive list view allows users to view their files in the way that makes sense to them: by name, by last modified date or even by who made the last modification. OneDrive will now remember your choice, even after you've closed the browser or switched to a different browser entirely. This will begin rolling out to customers starting today.

Android Improvements

Improved Upload Progress experience on Android

Begins rolling out to customers in August 2018

We know it’s important to manually upload files from your phone to the cloud, but do you ever find it difficult to understand which of your files are currently uploading? We’ve improved the user experience around upload progress in the OneDrive Android application to make it simple to understand which of your files are uploading, and how fast they’re uploading when you perform a manual upload. This change will be coming to the OneDrive Android app in August.

New Scan experience on Android

Begins rolling out to customers in early August 2018

We’ve improved the UX of Scan to make it easier for you to perfect your captures before uploading them to OneDrive. When you scan, you can now add new pages, crop, rotate and color balance the image before uploading it to OneDrive. This change will be coming to the OneDrive Android app in early August.

Improved preview experiences for 3D and large PowerPoint files on Android

Begins rolling out to customers in early August 2018

We are updating the OneDrive app on Android to support the same great preview experiences on the web. Now you’ll be able to view 3D files directly in the app. We’ve also improved the performance for viewing very large PowerPoint files directly in the app. These changes will be coming to the Android app in the first half of August.
