Information Memory problems can cause your PC to lose information or stop working. Windows 10 includes the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to help you identify and diagnose problems with memory when you suspect a PC has a memory problem that isn’t being automatically detected.

This tutorial will show you how to run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to check your Windows 10 PC for memory problems.

You must be an administrator to run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool.

Note If your PC crashes because of failing memory, and Windows Memory Diagnostics detects this, the system will prompt you to schedule a memory test the next time the computer is restarted.

    Here's How:

    1. Open Run (Win+R) or a command prompt at boot.

    2. Type mdsched into Run or command prompt at boot, and press Enter.

    3. Click/tap on the Restart now and check for problems option. (see screenshot below)

Warning Be sure to save your work and close any open programs before doing this.

    4. The computer will now automatically restart to run the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool. (see screenshot below)

Note As the test is running, you will see the current status for any detected problems.

    5. By default, the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool will run a standard test mix, use the default cache setting of each test, and use a pass count of 2 for the total number of times the entire test mix will repeat.

If you would like to change any of these default test settings, press the F1 key, use the Tab key to select which setting (Test mix, Cache, or Pass count) you want to change, change the setting to what you want, and press F10 when finished with your changes to apply them. (see screenshots below)

Note When you press F10 to apply your changes, Windows Memory Diagnostics will start over running the test based on your settings.

    6. When testing has completed, the computer will restart automatically.

    7. When you sign in to Windows 10 next, you should see the Windows Memory Diagnostic test results as a notification after a few minutes. (see screenshot below)

Tip If the Windows Memory Diagnostics test results do not show as a notification for you, then you can see them in Event Viewer.

  2. Windows memory diagnostic tool not Working in Windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused. We are glad to help you.

We recommend that you let the Memory Diagnostics Tool run automatically. However, advanced users might want to adjust the tool's settings. Here's how:

    • When the Memory Diagnostics Tool starts, press F1.
    • You can adjust the following settings:
      • Test mix. Choose what type of test you want to run: Basic, Standard, or Extended. The choices are described in the tool.
      • Cache. Choose the cache setting you want for each test: Default, On, or Off.
      • Pass count. Type the number of times you want to repeat the test.
    • Press F10 to start the test.
If the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool doesn't run automatically, you can run it manually.

    • Open Memory Diagnostics Tool by going to Control Panel. In the search box, type Memory, and then click Diagnose your computer's memory problems.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool in Windows 10 [IMG]

    • If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    • Choose when to run the tool.

Hope this information helps. Do contact us for further queries. We will be happy to assist you.

    Regards,

    Jenith

Windows memory diagnostic tool not Working in Windows 10

Thanks, Jenith. The problem is that: when I attempt to run Memory Diagnostics Tool manually per your instructions:

    • Open Memory Diagnostics Tool by going to Control Panel. In the search box, type Memory, and then click Diagnose your computer's memory problems.
    • If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    • Choose when to run the tool.
When I choose when to run the tool (i.e., for instance, chosing 'restart now and check for problems'), and then shut the computer down, when it comes back up, I get a black screen (as I described in original post), and it appears that Memory Diagnostics
Tool does not run at all. I wait and wait for minutes ... hours, and screen remains black, with Memory Diagnostics Tool not appearing to be running. I then turn the computer off, and then back on and it boots up normally to Windows 10 without running the Memory
Diagnostics Tool. Whatever my approach, it seems that Memory Diagnostics Tool will not run.

The Memory Diagnostics Tool has not otherwise run automatically on its own.

  5. Windows 10 Memory Diagnostics Tool

    Hi,

As the first moderator has stated, the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool would be taking its time to complete as it scans through your hardware. As it is advised to let it run overnight, it may still be stuck at certain points. We would suggest trying to remove
some RAM sticks and let the tool run again. It could be possible that one of the memory sticks has an issue if the tool run without issues after removing one of them (if you're using more than one). if that would be the case, we would suggest replacing the
memory in question to see if it helps.

Let us know if there are other concerns.

  6. Why is Windows 10 suddenly showing "Running Low On Memory"

    Hello,

Thank you for your reply, appreciate the time taken by you in keeping us updated on the status of the issue.

I suggest you to run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and check if it helps.

Usually, Windows automatically detects possible problems with your computer’s memory and displays a notification that asks if you want to run the Memory Diagnostics Tool.

However, if the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool doesn't run automatically, you can run it manually.

    Here are the steps:

    • Type Memory Diagnostic Tool in search box.

    • You will get a pop up, just click on
Restart now and check for problems.
It might take several minutes for the tool to finish checking your computer's memory. Once the test is completed, Windows will restart automatically.

Hope this helps. Please do let us know if you need any further assistance.

    Thank You.
