Problems with Windows 10 Update KB4023057

What on earth is wrong with the above update? My PC has tried 6 times to instal it and each time it completely crashes with a black screen only overcome by unpugging and leaving and replugging and switching on whereupon it tries a couple of times to boot up and then reverts to the pre-update version of windows. The update history shows the update as successful but clearly it keeps coming back with it so the system knows that's not right. I could alter the settings to require a manual update to avoid the endless nagging about it but I rather like the auto update generally and other updates have not been problematic. Is anyone else getting this problem?

    :)

So called update KB4023057 kills my internet. How to stop it from downloading?

Yes there is NO KB4023057 because, as I have explained if you chose to read my issue, it is an app, NOT an update. This means it will not appear as an update, cannot be stopped via a service or the wsshowhide.diagcab app.

I shall write that again: it is an app, NOT an update. This means it will not appear as an update, cannot be stopped via a service or the wsshowhide.diagcab app.

    Yes, I am on 1607.

I shall try the 1703 upgrade. Hopefully, it wont kill my bluetooth as 1709 does.

Nothing anywhere on the internet ? Well, put KB4023507 into google search and you will see a number of entries. Like those following. If not a legitimate MS update, then is must be a virus disguised as an update which peeps have been getting from July 2017.
It is mentioned in this forum as well as MS.com

Hi Sola. Welcome to the TenForums @Sola

Could you share what version and build of Windows 10 you are using.

Windows key + R, type winver, enter

    You could

    1) Run the Windows update trouble shooter, V1607 and back found in control panel, V1703 and V1709 part of settings, Update and security.

    2) Reset Windows Updates

    3) Hide the update

  6. So I have to ask, and you can just ignore, are you preventing the newer versions. You are running July 2016, there has been a March 2017 and September 2017.

Not that you have to update, yet, just wondering. (By March 2018 to receive support you will have to update V1607.)

No I'm not preventing and have just tried to use the update assistant which also tried to install newer version but that also failed with a black screen and reversion to existing windows. What do you think is going wrong?

    Hi Sola. Not sure.

Before trying diagnostic procedures or OS installs I always recommend that you create a backup of your data off machine, create an Image with a tool like Macrium Reflect and have bootable media that matches your current Windows environment. You can also create new media using “Windows Media Creation Tool”. Only use a Microsoft site for this tool.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

I would the Windows Update Reset that I provided link for.

Next you could try the inplace repair / upgrade. This will take you to V1709. There has been some reported issue with a blank / black screen.

    Hi Ken
I have had a look at all of this. I have been using Acronis for backups for years but have been meaning to change so have taken your recommendation on Macrium and that is building a new back up right now. I tried the .bat file yesterday which didn't work in that the update history wan't reset after it appeared to operate successfully..............but I assume it didn't. I'll try it again.
So far as the Media Creation Tool is concerned, the problem I have with that is that if the new install doesn't work, it will disable the old OS meaning that I have no return point which is something that I've made use of a number of times with these failed installs. That sounds very unwise

  10. If setup fails, from USB key it should return you to your current version. If you notice the second point from the bottom in the warning section of tutorial I think that addresses your concern.

If you use and are comfortable with Acronis, which is a nice product, then keep using it. It is nice to see you have a tool. Most users don't and don't make any backups. With your backups, Acronis or MR, you should also be able to go back.

You could try the routines in the DISM tutorial to repair the situation.

Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

If all else fails there is all the clean install. I know more work but the product out the back end is a great base.

    Hi Ken
Alas, problems have magnified. PC now won’t boot showing 0xc0000001 error message and can’t get into the boot menu on F12. Keyboard doesn’t seem to be going live until too late and boot hangs at sign in screen or blue screen or black screen. I have a Macrius Reflect recovery disc but without access to the boot menu I can’t get it to run and though loading it into the CD you can hear the drive turning it, nothing happens. Now beyond my capabilities. Any thoughts?

  12. As soon as you power on hit F12 and do it two, three. four times.

I assume F12 is boot menu on your device?

Once in Macrium you will notice an option to repair boot.

Hope you also have another device you can use. If you create this boot disk you can copy data out.
