If you choose only the system drive, only that will be formatted.

Go to a working computer, download, create a bootable copy, then perform a clean install.

Once your computer is set to boot from the DVD, you should see this option. If you are installing from a retail Windows 10 USB thumb drive, you will be asked to select either 32 or 64 bit Windows 10. Learn more here

The Windows logo will appear on screen, this might be here for a while, as long as you see the animating dots, everything should be ok.

Select your Language, Time and Keyboard method then click Next.

    Click Install now

Windows 10 setup will prompt you for a product key during installation a couple times. If you originally upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 click the option 'I don't have a key' and 'Do this later' . If you have a Windows 10 product key, you can proceed
    to enter it.

Setup will also prompt you to select the edition you have a license for - Home or Pro. Please make sure you choose the right edition. If you choose the wrong edition, your only option will be to perform a clean install again.

The copy of Windows 10 you download and upgrade from will correspond with the edition of Windows you have installed, if it does not, this is why you might be experiencing problems activating:

Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Core should install Windows 10 Home

Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro should install Windows 10 Pro

Wait while setup prepares to copy files

Accept the license terms then click Next

Click Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)

NOTE: Sometimes Windows 10 setup can become confused if it see's a thumb drive. You might get a driver missing error or something to that effect. If you do, restart setup, but this time, when you arrive at the following screen, disconnect your thumb drive then
go through Custom options. When setup is ready copy files, it will prompt you to reconnect the installation source (your USB).

Select the drive then click New

NOTE: If you have multiple partitions listed, select each one (starting at the bottom), then click delete until there is only a single (one) unallocated drive displayed in the window.

Select the unallocated drive listed, click New, click Apply then OK

This will split the drive into multiple partitions, select the Primary partition then click Next.

NOTE: The System Reserved partition is where recovery files are kept for diagnostics and repairing damaged Windows 10 files; or even reinstall Windows 10.

    Wait while Windows installs

When this phase of setup is complete, Windows will automatically restart then reboot into setup again.

Windows is detecting and installing your hardware. After this is complete, Windows will restart one last time.

    Out of Box Experience

The Out of Box Experience page is where you get to configure detailed settings in Windows, which includes creating a user account, configure privacy, sync PC settings and install modern applications.

  3. Reinstall window 10 with media creation tool delete even the files in the Local Drive D ?

Hi Abbas. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

If you can still start into WIndows and only want to do a Repair Install then it will reinstall Windows over itself and keep your apps and files in place. It should not touch a separate data partition at all.

But if you're going to Clean Install then it's important that during the Custom install, at the drive selection screen you choose only the C drive and do not touch the data drive. As long as you do that then it will protect your files that are in that separate
    partition.

If you choose C and then format it before install it will get it cleaner than just clicking Next without formatting which will archive the entire C drive in C:\windows. old.

If you want to get it even cleaner you can delete all the partitions before the data drive, then in the Unallocated space it will create, choose to create and format a new Partition which will include the other needed partitions, and also protect your data
partition as long as you don't touch it at all.

But Your files should always be backed up because the hard drive can die at any time. Some suggestions to help ease into this habit:

You can drag 5gb for free into OneDrive app to store in the cloud where they are safe from fire and theft.

If you install Google Drive, you can use their new Backup to choose User folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.) to sync up to 15g for free to their cloud.

Or you can drag or copy them to another hard drive, USB external or flash drive.

Here's how to drag, copy or move large groups of files:

A better file backup to external disk is free Macrium which is the choice of the experts:

    http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/B...

Besides your files you should back up a System Image to use in place of reinstall in 20 minutes. The best free alternative is Macrium:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Brink, so we can't do a Clean Install with a blank disc? I thought we could, because I have already put it on a disc.

  6. Okay. Well, Night Hawk has posted some guidelines in my most recent thread about a problem I had today with File Explorer in Windows 10. But, I don't understand those guidelines. Can you read what he posted, and explain what he was talking about? Sorry for the lack of understanding or the misunderstanding.

    Hello Plasmawario, *Smile

If you like, you can refresh Windows instead for essentially the same thing.

  11. What's what I'm trying to do. Can you be kind and walk me through it? I already have a bootable usb with Windows 10 on it, and I can boot into it.

  13. Reinstall Windows 10 with this media

OK, I attempted that option, and I may have accidentally clicked the Startup Repair button. Now it's telling me it's fixing disk errors and it tells me it may take over an hour to complete. Now I'm a little worried because previously this option did nothing and I don't know what it will do like will it change my personal files or something?

EDIT: ok never mind, it's over now and nothing changed.
