Open an admin command prompt and type
Code: shutdown /s /t 0
Copy and paste it from here directly into the Command window, so it captures the correct spacing.
Press enter.
I believe this will shut it down completely without installing the update.

The update is on 94% at the moment though, do you recommend going through with forcing the shutdown or do you think allowing it to finish and running the WUshowhide programme again would be better? I'm willing to stay awake for it considering only 6% is left if you would rather we do that.

If it's installing now, DO NOT stop it! *Eek
Don't forget - 6% on the shutdown side, then it boots up and has a lot more to do. *Wink

But, if you can get it installed this time, because Avast shields have been disabled, that is good progress.

If it boots up and you can get into a user account, and you find things are not working properly, we can try the Show/Hide update tool then (seems the update has to be installed in order to hide it - that didn't used to be the case, I believe).

Right that's the update fully installed again.

So as normal I am locked out of main account as it asks for password but refuses every entry as It won't connect me to internet.

Got into the local account fine, it also has no internet but at least I can enter it to try some fixes.

I have a cmd prompt to reset the IP if maybe you think that could work.

Also if it helps I ran a troubleshoot and I believe it said something about a network driver.

In bed now so can't try any fixes until morning so I'll give any advice you leave a try first thing.

And thanks for the info on a metered connection with Ethernet, don't know how i missed that.

That option was added to Settings in build 14986, so that means it's in Creators Update (1703) or later. For Anniversary Update (1607) or earlier the registry method is the only one available. But as both methods change the same registry settings it a safe registry change to make.

Thanks Bree, for that info.

Jordan333: your results appear to confirm one suspicion: the existing user account has become corrupted. I'm glad we have the second account to work from.

First, I need to go over some things:

Please fill in your system specs as best you can.
Type system in the search box, and select System information.
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums Site Use Tutorials

Please answer the following:
• Do you have all your data backed up somewhere offline?
• When do you think you'll be able to get an external drive for imaging?
• Is this system a clean install of W10, or an upgrade from W7/W8?
• Have you checked your OEM or Motherboard manufacturer for BIOS/Chipset/Network updates? (I can't do it, as there's not enough info in your computer specs)
• Do you have any "bangs" on anything in Device Manager now that the update has been installed? (Specifically check Network adapters.)
• Please provide the make/model of network adapter in the system.
• I'm guessing you have access to another internet-connected device so that you can read and answer this thread while your computer is offline. Is it another computer, which can be used to download things, or is it a phone? Are you able to download things on another device and transfer them over to the computer?

To determine if you use an MSA to login, tell me this: at the login screen, is the password for the existing account the same password you would use to login to your Microsoft account in a web browser? If so, then you are using an MSA to login, and it would not be possible to simply remove the password - the entire account would have to be changed to a Local Account. (We're not going to do this though.)

I'd feel much better if we could make a system image with Macrium before going further, but, here goes:

The first things I'd like you to do to the system when you wake are:
Run winver again and post the results.

Turn off Fast Startup
Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

Shut the system down completely (not a restart).
Turn it back on and enter into the new account; let it completely boot and sit for a while until the HDD activity calms down (You can view that in Task Manager).

For the NIC: If it's still not online at this point, you can try 2 things: 1). run the network troubleshooter (type troubleshoot into the search bar in Settings), and then 2). In Device Manager, see if you have an option to rollback the network driver.

NOTE: Remember, the minute you get internet access again, be sure to set your connection to metered!

Turn on System Restore
Turn On or Off System Protection for Drives in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

Set TWO restore points (one for redundancy). Note: doing this will likely remove any restore points which allowed you to rollback to v1607. If you think this will be a problem, then don't do it. In other words, if you must get this system online in order to download things we need to continue working, then we are going to have to use the WUShow/Hide tool and get you back to v1607. If this is the case, stop here and do not turn on System Restore.

If you are going to continue:
Uninstall Avast Free and MBAM Free.

Open an Admin Command Prompt and enter
Code: sfc /scannow
Let it run to completion. We are looking for "No Integrity Violations Found". If it finds any problems - whether it says they have been fixed or not - run it again, up to 3 times, with reboots in-between.

If you cannot get the all-clear, we'll move on to other things. I suspect you are 5 hours ahead of me. See you in the morning.

Hi there. To be honest that last paragraph is as brief as you needed to be. Sometimes systems get way beyond the repair point. Your choice, of course, but either reset it or clean install and just be done with it. It makes for a clean system instead of wasting valuable time trying to fix. Time saved really. I'd also stick with Defender. Wander over to the BSOD thread or through the forum threads to see how 3rd party AV breaks systems. Again, your choice.

Glad to see you use System Protection for restore points. Wise choice. Also, no need for any other backup software. Windows still has that included, which works great. Either of these two:

Whatever you choose to do, good luck.

True, but it still works (for now) in Fall Creators Update. Still, when the time comes that it is removed, there's another TenForums tutorial that @Tony K can refer to *Smile

They've been saying deprecation since 10 was introduced. Still here, even in in Insider Previews.

I'm thinking MS is rewriting it just as they are CP to UWP Settings app and other features. Only time will tell, not opinions.

I'm quite sure the OP is capable of making his own decision.

This sure doesn't sound like a re-write to me @Tony K.

"I'm thinking MS is rewriting it" is just my opinion, which means it's not a concrete fact. I suggest you look through all those features on the page you linked. Most are being rewritten or being integrated elsewhere. Just because it's labeled deprecated doesn't mean it's going to be removed for good, but rather for other consideration. Perhaps MS has not made a decision on what they are going to do with backup. All I know as fact is that disk backup still exists in 10. That's remains a choice for the OP.

I suggest we take this discussion elsewhere, for this is interrupting this OP's thread. We are here to suggest solutions, not have a discussion about who's suggestion is best. Again, I'm quite sure the OP is capable of making his own decisions.

Thanks for all the info while I was asleep. Hard to use the quote system while I'm on a phone though, but all suggestions were helpful.

In regards to Tony k's advice, I have considered a clean install in the past but I have a few things stopping me from doing that, certain hardware I have will no longer work if I do that due to the way they recognise ownership.

I'll try my best to reply to all your points now simrick.

So there are no bangs in device manager, I'm using a win10 that was upgraded from 7, yes I'm fairly sure the main account is an MSA, my system specs should be up to date on my profile now.

I've disabled fast start up and turned the system off and back on. Funnily enough this got rid of a 3rd account which had created itself ages ago. Ran troubleshooter and it keeps telling me there might be a problem with the driver for local area connection adapter, it's unable to resolve this issue however. Device manager does not seem to allow me to roll back the driver for the network adapter, perhaps I checked incorrectly though.

I have access to someone else's computer, I was thinking of maybe downloading drivers for my mobo from his system and installing them on mine?

Edit - I think the adapter is realtek. My mobo is a gigabyte Z68X-UD4-B3
