    May I give a suggestion?

Open Registry Editor and navigate to :-

Look at the value data for DropLocation, it should be C:\Windows\Temp\xxxxxxxxxxxxxx-Sigs. If it is correct, open the Temp folder. If you find it difficult to access, run Notepad as administrator, open the Temp folder and clear the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx-Sigs folder. Try updating WD through WU.

You've just saved a lot of panic. This has fixed it. What was the issue in there do you think?

People are having issues getting Windows Defender to do definition updates scheduled through task scheduler and it's mainly affecting the AU update. Do you guys know about this?

For me WD opens at scheduled time but does nothing. It's also annoying this way as it opens WD and interrupts any full screen programs in use. May look at 3rd party AV...

    Brink,
Found your tutorial and used it successfully to set my metered connection after upgrading to W10 from W7. Needed this because of a pitiful 20Gb/month, slow satellite connection. Now have a new satellite with ten times the speed, and also 35Gb peak, 50Gb/month off peak, so I would like to download updates off peak whilst keeping the metered connection. Problem is, I can't find any download button in my updates settings page, nor does anything appear for me on the Windows update site. All I get there is descriptions of what the updates are about. Any ideas?
    Regards,

Hello Slatey, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

When you click on "Check for updates", you should have a "Download" button when there are available updates found by Windows Update to download and install.

Usually, you'll at least have definition updates for Windows Defender available everyday though.

    Brink,
Did some snips of what I get in settings, but struggling a bit trying to work out how to attach them.
When I go to update, I get "updates are available." Under that, I get a "Details" link, but no download button. Further down the page are "Learn more" and "Advanced options" buttons, and all three of these links take me to a mass of update descriptions and info about known issues, but still no download button.

    Brink,
Hope you can read these, or enlarge them, as there appear to be size restrictions on JPEG files.
These are the only things that appear on my update screen. Going to the details link on P1 takes me to P2, from where I can only get a bit more detail about the updates.
The "Learn More" link takes me to the Windows update site, where I can find more info and all the updates, but no download method. There is a "Find Downloads" link which takes me to another page where I may be able to search for specific updates, but this seems to be a very tedious method.
The "Advanced Options" link takes me to P3, from where I can view my update history of failed download list but again no download link.

You might temporarily set your connection to be unmetered, then download and install the updates.

When finished, set you connection back to metered, and see if it does the same the next time you have updates available.

    Brink,
Had considered that as an option - had previously downloaded that .reg file with its brother. Off-peak is between 1 and 7am, so I'll need to get up early to do it before I head to work. Won't need to do anything with the "Defaultmediacost" key again?
The notes to your tutorial mention to use the the download button. Does that mean that with it missing, my update screens are abnormal?
Wouldn't surprise me - most common statement from techies who have worked on this PC is "Never seen that before!"

Correct. You should be seeing a Download button when updates are available to be able to manually download and install them on your metered connection.

I'm thinking that you may have set it to be metered when you already had a download starting that may have caused this. I'm hoping that doing this will let the next work properly.

The missing download button when using a metered connection is a bug in the initial release of the AU. It was soon fixed in one of the early updates. First reported by @Slartybart here:

Thanks all. Will be getting up early tomorrow, but seeing as that is to go for a surf, I thought this will have to wait till Monday. So, having done nothing yet, I just went back to my update page, and guess what? For no plausible reason, there is suddenly a download button! [See below]. This sort of rot happens to me all the time, no wonder a bloke drinks.

And Brink, I do recall seeing a download bar stuck at 4% below the details link on P1 for quite some time. There was a list of maybe 50 available/failed updates, but that is now down to 5 available. I have this PC set to get updates only from other computers [daughter's] on my home network, so I'm wondering if for some reason that is possible even with the metered connection, and it has fixed the problem. This has never happened before, and our PCs have often been on at the same time over the last 7 month since this problem started.

There's a much easier way (Win 10 Pro).
From the Start Menu, search for 'gpedit' and run the Group Policy Editor. Expand Computer Configuration in the left-hand pane, and navigate to Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update. Double-click Configure Automatic Updates in the list, select the Enabled radio button, and in the left-hand box select 2 - Notify for download and notify for install. Now click OK, and you'll be notified whenever there are updates

Also to set your Schedule restart.
    Here are the steps :
from the Windows Update, click Advanced options and select Notify to schedule restart from the Choose how updates are installed list.

My specs were not quite correct - OS is W10 64bit Home Premium. From what I have gleaned from the net, those Pro options are not available to Home users, but I could be wrong.
The download button has shown and disappeared at various times, but I think I managed to get some updates downloaded and installed when I reset connection to un-metered for a day. Is there some way to view all updates to see what has actually happened? Two of the last updates on 29/6 - Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2 x64 Edition - August 2016 (KB890830), and Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3176493), have failed to install despite 37 attempts each.
