    Upgrade problem

I had my computer crash and Dell wiped my computer clean and reinstalled Windows 10. Build 10240.

I'm very happy with it and don't want to change a thing. But every time I go on line Windows10Upgrade kicks in. I don't want it because it changes all my setting.
For example, Under wifi setting I turns Use random hardware address on.
This messes up my wifi settings.
I'm in a hospital and to set wifi I have to go downstairs and have the computer lady set it up. She's only here once a week. It won't let Firefox be my default browser. And many other things I don't like.

I figured a way to stop the the upgrade. But after while it starts up again.
I tried the Winaero way stop upgrades. I clicked Disable Upgrade Service.
But It is still downloading the upgrades. I tried the metered connections but this build doesn't have that option.
I deleted Windows10Upgrade.exw. But it still kicks in.
Also it created a new drive that it won't let me access.
How can I stop Microsoft from messing with my computer?

I'll try to post this before the upgrade kicks in.

    *Smile Thank you Brink,

    That seems to have worked.
Step 3. Run as administrator is what I missed.

I might have spokes too soon. The screen with lock on it showed again but it said, "Oops

    something went wrong".

The file Windows10Upgrade.exw showed up again intact. I had changed its name. As I am going to do now.
In Programs and Features Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant showed but with the wrong icon.
I had previously uninstalled it. As I am going to do now.

    reading tutorial:

    • Tutorials
    • Windows Update & Activation Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

    option 1 I don't have group policy.

option 2. will not work in home addition.

option 3. driver updates--I doesn't care about drivers just updates.

    option 4. metered--this build doesn't have metered.

option 5. 1. For how, see: How to Start, Stop, Restart, and Disable Services in Windows 10
Option One: To Start, Stop, and Disable Services in Services Window"<link

Now I'm on the page that says, "Start, Stop, and Disable Services in Windows 10

    option 1
    1. Do step 2 or step 3 below for how you would like to open the Services snap-in window
    I did both.

No matter what I do, the white screen with a lock on it, shows up eventualy. It has a percent counting up.
It says windows is updating critical updates do not turn off your computer. As explained before i don't want any updates.
    I hit ctl-alt-del.
when the screen comes up I select switch user. when I sign back in i hit the airplane sw and restart.

The highest it ever got was 71%.
This last time it went to 72%.

    I now have:
restart, update and restart, update and shutdown.

without any upgrades. How can I stop the white screen?

By the way I found the metered switch and turned it on. I fear it might be too late because the upgrade already started.

    Don @doncole,

When you say this build doesn't have metered, what do you mean? What build are you running?

If you have build 14986 or later installed, you should be able to set a metered connection.

Set Ethernet Connection as Metered or Unmetered in Windows 10 Network Sharing Tutorials

Set Wireless Network as Metered or Non-Metered in Windows 10 Network Sharing Tutorials

Since you already have a Windows Update ready to install, you might see if resetting Windows Update can clear this for you.

    Thank you Brink *Smile*Smile

I unblocked deleted history as you suggested.

I fell asleep when I awoke the circle was spinning. It said your computer may shut off several times. I couldn't get the rest of it.

    #ctl-alt-del didn't work anymore.
So I shut it down. When I restarted it said "Restoring your old windows".

    Fine with me.

After it started this window came up. See screenshot.
As you can "Remind me later" is falling off the edge of the screen. That's because I lowered the custom scaling from 135% to 123%. At 135% I could't see it at all.

Anyway I clicked on it and the window disappeared.

After I shut down and restarted and went online this window showed up see screenshot2.

My question is "Can I leave the computer alone awhile without fear of the updating starting again?"

Well, now I see that white window keeps popping up.

    how can I stop it?

  11. Hi @doncole, are you reffering to Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant?
    Attachment 176163

If yes, this is a program in your computer which you can always uninstall. You mentioned you had deleted Windows10Upgrade.exw. I assume that is the executable exe file of that program. Just uninstall the whole program /do not delete randomly files in it or wherever/ from Settings - Apps - Apps and Features - then search the list for that program:
    Attachment 176166

If you have Windows 10 Home, you can't avoid automatic checks and update installs. But they are, however, performed from different way.
Hope I understood right what you are trying to do.
    Best luck

    Upgrade problem

It would be recommended to install security updates when able to. This would stop it. Otherwise, clicking on "Remind me later" should delay it until later.

Since you have a metered connection, you shouldn't have anything automatically download and install without getting a notice like this one first.

Thank you Ivan Petrov for your input,

    I'm deleting c:\Windows10Uprade which is a folder.

Are you saying I should only delete Windows10UpgradeApp.exe which is inside that folder.

I have Windows Home addition so will this not work anyway?

My goal is to stop all automatic upgrades.

Should I post on General support or Installation and Upgrades.? The latter is where I sent the screenshots.
