Brink, thanks but when I entered the command clean all I was told "clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot, system, etc.", so what can I do now?

Brink, I now have another problem.
Three times recently my PC has shut down while I have been away from the screen. It happened a few minutes ago and when I pressed the restart button nothing happened. I pressed the start button and nothing happened. I did it again and nothing happened. The third time I held the power button in for several seconds and finally my PC started and everything seemed normal.

    Any ideas what's causing this?

Brink, I found the cause of the unexpected shutdown problem. Having disconnected and reconnected various things I then unplugged my UPS and connected the tower directly to a power plug. I also disconnected the VGA cable to the monitor and connected it directly to a power plug, and then the computer worked normally.

The UPS seemed to be working normally but something must be wrong with it because it couldn't have been supplying power to the tower or the monitor.

It's not that long ago since I had a new battery put in the UPS, so I will take it to my local computer technician and get him to check it.

I await your reply to post #59.

Did you boot from your installation media, open a command prompt at boot, and run the command?

It won't let you clean the OS drive from a command prompt within Windows.

Brink, if I boot from the installation media, i.e. the USB containing Build 17063, how can I open a command prompt?

Brink, I did not get the Windows Setup window, I got the select Language etc. window. SHIFT + F 10 still opened a command prompt window. I entered the command diskpart then list disk then select disk 0 (which is definitely the correct disk), then I entered clean all and then the disk size and free space were both shown as 111GB. When I entered the command create partition primary I was told "the operation is not allowed on a disk that is in the process of being cleaned". Also the disk is shown as GPT. How do I convert it to MBR and how do I get the command create partition primary to work?

You were supposed to use the "Clean" command as instructed above instead of the "clean all" command since the "clean all" command will take a very long time to complete.

Only when it completes will you be able to use the "create partition primary" command.

Brink, how will I know when the clean command is complete? (When I used the clean all command I assumed it had completed because the disk size and free space were both shown as 111GB, and there was no sign of any further command prompt activity).

Brink, I booted from the USB drive containing Build 17063, and when the Setup window opened I pressed Shift + F10 to open command prompt. The various commands completed and when I ran the clean command I was told "Diskpart succeeded in cleaning the disk". The create partition primary command succeeded. I then closed the command prompt and continued with the Build 17063 setup. I chose custom install and selected disk 0 (the C drive) as the installation disk, but I was then told that the disk is MBR and that on EFI systems Windows can only be installed on GPT disks. How do I convert the disk to GPT? ( I opened MiniTool Partition Manager and it showed disk 0 as GPT, but it also said the C drive partition was NTFS. Does that mean that the C drive is MBR)?

When you selected Disk 0 to install Windows 10 to, was it showing as only one partition and "unallocated"?

If able, can you post a screenshot of what it shows?

Other than the size difference, did it look like this below for Disk 0 as "unallocated space" when selecting in Windows Setup?

No it did not. It listed my various drives and for drive 0, the C drive, it said size 111GB and free 111 GB. (To be honest I do not recall whether it also said unallocated space. It is now 3.20am here in Malta and I have been struggling to install Build 17063 for hours now. The problem is that after each failure I have to boot from my Macrium Reflect rescue disk, which takes some time to open up, and then restore my latest backup of drive C).
