    Windows 10 fails to update

Attempted Step 7 as suggested. I downloaded the Media Creation Tool onto my desktop then right clicked the icon and ran as administrator. It downloaded Win10, verified the download, created Win10 Media, and then up popped the WINDOWs icon just like previous 'run setup'. Then it stopped and displayed the error message that Setup could not start properly and to reboot and it again. Which I did only I switched over to my other admin account and tried from there. Same thing. Now I'll try to use the Media tool to create a USB stick.

The media tool had no problem loading Win 10 onto a USB stick [ESD-USB(f*Smile] but when I ran setup from the stick I got the same error message.

  3. Command Prompt (Admin)

    dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:E:\sources\install.wim /index:1
    OR
    dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:E:\sources\install.esd /index:1

Note: E is an example. Change it to the drive letter of your Thumbdrive.
Remind me - what edition of Win10 is on your machine (Home or Pro)

    Try booting from the Thumbdrive
At the What type of installation do you want? window
    Select Upgrade Install

    Windows 10 fails to update

I have win10 home. Since I'm doing this testing w/o an AV for which tests do I need to be on line and when can I be off line? How about the above test?

  6. Online/Offline - for most things, you can be disconnected from the internet, except for the obvious downloads.

Ok, lets see what you get with

    Command Prompt (Admin)

    dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:E:\sources\install.wim /index:2
    OR
    dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:E:\sources\install.esd /index:2

You might get anything if there is no index:2 in the wim/esd

The install media is x64 - is your machine also x64 .. is the current install x64?

Use this link here then choose option 1 Once their download the Windows 10 Home version from Tech Bench.
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/9...-download.html

If you don't have the correct one from media tool. I think down loading the correct ISO from Tech bench works better in some cases. Your Choice of course.

  9. Ok.. index:2 is Win10 Home x64. MCT seems to have an issue ... if you in fact selected Home when you built the install media, MCT should have only put Home on the USB drive. There have been a few changes, so I'll simply ask if you downloaded MCT anew or used one you already had. You shouldn't have to go through the download/create process again, unless the process below doesn't work.

Redstone 1 is coming up, so I would wait for that to create a new Thumbdrive using a current MCT
Until then, you'll just have to remember to access index:2 if you run Dism RestoreHealth

Or... you could see if the current MCT correctly builds Home install media - but wait on that ... see if you can't get the Repair install to work as simrick already suggested. If that fails again (let's hope not) you could try Dism with index:2 - essentially a Repair install without any changes that might affect the boot.

    On the Thumbdrive
    Navigate to sources
    Open install.esd with 7-zip

Inside 7-zip file manger you should see 2 folders (named 1 & 2)
Double click folder 2 to expand it in 7-zip
    Ctrl+A to select all
Ctrl+C to copy the selected files/folders
    In File Explorer
Create a new folder (Win10x64Home) on your machine
Open the Win10x64Home in File Explorer
Ctrl+V to paste the copied files/folders into Win10x64Home
Try running setup from the Win10x64Home folder (containing the extracted Home install media)

My noob is showing again. I opened the install.esd file with 7-zip, selected and copied the files and folders from folder 2, created the new Win10 folder, and opened it. However when I tried to paste the contents of the clipboard into new folder I could not ... like the clipboard was empty; no paste function. Tried several times but no success. I'm doing something wrong or forgetting something???

I tried again doing it one file at a time with interesting results. All folders except Users appeared to copy ok. Users gave the message "cannot create symbolic link: access denied??" and the two files (no folder) seemed to copy but the destination folder does not show them.

  12. Sounds as though correctly you did the copy/paste.

After thinking about it though, I don't think my method would work with setup without additional changes.

Just read your 2nd post about this. You can delete the Win10x64Home test/temp folder

    Let's try a different tact:

Double click the Win10 ISO to mount it - make note of the drive letter

    Right click the Windows icon
Windows 10 fails to update [IMG]
(aka Start button) on the Taskbar
    Select Command Prompt (Admin)

Enter the following lines in the Command Prompt window:
Note: Replace E with the drive letter of your mounted ISO

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:E:\sources\install.esd:2 /limitaccess

    SFC /ScanNow
If there are any errors on the screen after the commands run,
    Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs
    Right click the CBS folder
Select Send to > Compressed (zip) folder
answer yes to place on DesktopAttach the zip folder to your next post
    Full tutorials:
    Run DISM in Command Prompt
Run SFC /ScanNOW in Command Prompt

Looking at it, seems to have found lots of problems, but I am not good at reading the CBS logs. But @axe0 is VERY good at reading these logs. Maybe if he gets time he can take a look for you. *Smile
