I'll try it next. The secureboot disable did not solve the problem.

    Windows 10 fails to update

I looked at the last link but it seems to more on disabling secure boot. I did that with no effect and then re-enabled it. My motherboard seems to better facilitate that operation than other descriptions I've seen. I can just click-on, click-off.

I noticed that my UEFI version is a 2013 build; would you recommend an update to see if it has any effect?

  6. Sure, try updating your firmware

Please follow this tutorial to provide the current operating environment of your machine.
Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

    Boot to Safe mode: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...c-in-safe-mode
    Then restart in normal mode.

Sounds silly - but it is a legitimate fix for some issues - don't know why.

Is a flaky profile causing this on your machine?

    Launch Command Prompt (Admin)

    reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" /s > %TEMP%\profList.txt

    exit

Attach the profList.txt file in your temp folder to a new post - thanks.
Enter %TEMP%\profList.txt in the file box on the Manage Attachment window and press the Upload button

Since I touched on profiles, try creating a new local admin account, sign-in to the new account and try WU.

    Thanks

As requested I used Speccy to create the following: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/C...DmkZBZi1CWtmmj
Boy, that's a lot of information. I also created another admin account... no help there. Then did the safe mode/normal mode
boot ... nothing gained. I also attached a profile list.

    Windows 10 fails to update

    Hi.
I notice your Java is out-of-date. Also ASUS AI Suite: I had that on my system and had to get rid of it completely, as it was causing too many problems. Other than that, I will let @Slartybart continue on, as he had asked for the speccy info.

I know there is an "ultimate" solution to this issue, i.e. reformat the hard drive and then do a clean install and I'm starting to consider it. But if I do that can I still get the free upgrade? Also, if I do that how could I minimize the reformat loses. I made a 'True Image', would I be able to use it? .... or would that just reintroduce the problem? Actually, I'm hoping that we can still fix this without having to do that.

Yeah, sometimes we just can't fix it, and have to bite the bullet....but, we try our best first!

Once a system has W10 installed and successfully activated, W10 can be reinstalled as many times as you want/need, and it will auto-activate (no key entry necessary).

I'm sure that will just reintroduce the problem. Let's wait for Slartybart's next steps. *Smile

Nope, that one failed to install, too. However, the update history shows that on 13Jul it successfully installed (KB3173428) Update For Windows 10 Version 1511 and (KB890830) Malicious SW Removal Tool.

  15. Thanks,

The Users list compared to the Profile list you posted earlier tell me there is not an issue with Users (a known issue where there is a profile in the list, but not actual User folder).

The error code suggests corruption in the CBS manifest:
Try these steps one at time until the issue is resolved or you run out of steps.

    Is Windows activated?
    No? Activate Windows 10

    Launch Command Prompt (Admin)
    enter the following line
    reg query HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /s
    If DisableWindowsUpdateAccess REG_DWORD 0x1

    launch regedit
    navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
change the value of DisableWindowsUpdateAccess to 0
    exit regedit
    exit Command Prompt

    Launch Windows Update

Try the next suggestion if the issue is not resolved.

Restore health to the component store
DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image
Step 6. To Use DISM /RestoreHealth /Source:wim Command
    - OR -
Step 7. To Use DISM /RestoreHealth /Source:esd Command
    Check System Files
SFC Command - Run in Windows 10
    Read the front material, then
    follow >> OPTION THREE <<
To Run SFC /SCANNOW Command in Windows 10

If there are integrity issues reported on screen,
Follow the instructions in >> OPTION FIVE <<
To View Only the "SFC" Scan Results from the CBS.LOG

If there are no integrity errors, Launch Windows Update

Try the next suggestion if the issue is not resolved.

Paste the following line into the address bar of File Explorer
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\TroubleshootingLaunch System and Security > Fix problems with Windows Update
    Press Advanced
    Select Run as administrator
    Press Next

    Launch Windows Update

Try the next suggestion if the issue is not resolved.

    Automatically reset Windows Update components
Download and run MS Windows Update diagnostic cab (direct download)

    Launch Windows Update

Try the next suggestion if the issue is not resolved.

Manually reset Windows Updates via batch file
