    Thanks Bree, I do realize that however one fault with that method is that for some reason Windows Defender do NOT auto download and update. These are tiny downloads and don't put any strain on my connection so I don't mind them. I can manually update WD but it's another niggling annoyance that really shouldn't have to be dealt with. Thanks for the information though.

    When I was using Win 7 I had it set to let me manually download and install updates, but it would still auto update the tiny
    and less stressful MSE updates for security. Those updates never caused a usage issue with the internet for me.

    Hi, it is possible to set up your own scheduled task to periodically update Defender should you so wish. There is info on this site on that.

    If you use the metered approach as Bree recommends, you can then avoid Windows Update completely. Use Windows Update MiniTool (WUMT) instead: it ALWAYS shows you updates, and makes you pick the ones you want. This one-two punch will give you complete control over what you do and don't download and install.

    It's hidden a long way down in Settings, but it's available in all editions, Home included.

    Update & Security > Advanced options > Delivery Optimisation > Advanced options
